Hayden Springer has become the 14th player to record a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour after shooting a 12-under 59 in the first round of the John Deere Classic.
Springer carded eight birdies and two eagles, holing from just outside 12 feet on the final green for the last of his birdies to break the 60 barrier.
The 27-year-old American fired an eight under 27 on the front nine at TPC Deere Run, the lowest nine-hole score on Tour since 2000, then went quiet for several holes. He was nine under thru 16 holes when he holed out from the rough for eagle at the par-five 17th.
That put him one birdie away from the elusive 59. He found the centre of the 18th fairway, put his second shot about 12 feet from the pin and drained the putt.
His feat comes less than two weeks after Cam Young shot 59 at the Travelers Championship which was the first 59 since 2020. Jim Furyk holds the PGA Tour record with a 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship and he has also carded a 59, along with Scottie Scheffler, Kevin Chappell, Brandt Snedeker, Adam Hadwin, Justin Thomas, Stuart Appleby, Paul Goydos, David Duval, Chip Beck, and Al Geiberger.
“I am feeling good. I am kind of at a loss for words in terms of being able to do that,” said Springer after signing his card.
“It is one of those rare things in golf, so to have that opportunity and pull it off is pretty special.
Springer struggled to contain his emotion after shooting a historic 59 in round one at the John Deere Classic
“It is special to be able to do that. I played well last week but it has been a little bit tough to find anything and get stuff going and go low.
“It is special. It feels good to be standing here and to have had a good round of golf.
“I didn’t actually think I could make that shot [on 17] but I did and that kind of changed the momentum.”
Springer had missed seven of his last nine cuts but did finish 10th at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.
He is ranked 236th in the world and has never won on the PGA Tour. He turned pro in 2019 but, after losing his card, he earned his way back on tour via Q-school last December.

American Cameron Young holed a 10-foot putt for a 59 as South Korea’s Tom Kim held onto a narrow lead after the third day of the Travelers Championship.
Young made two eagles and seven birdies at the TPC River Highlands course for the first sub-60 score in nearly four years on the PGA Tour and the 13th in history.
Having moved within five shots of Kim’s lead, Young said his preparation had done little to suggest such a score was on its way.
“Didn’t feel particularly awesome,” he said. “I chunked a few less on the range than I did yesterday. Then, yeah, came out and just was very comfortable and things just started coming down close to the hole.”
Kim carded a second straight 65 to sit at 18 under par with world number one Scottie Scheffler and Akshay Bhatia just a shot behind.
“It’s a stacked leaderboard,” said Kim, a day after his 22nd birthday. “Out here, a five, six-shot lead is not safe at all. So I’ve got to go out tomorrow and do the same game plan and execute.”
Xander Schauffele hit a 64 and Sungjae Im a 63 to be two shots from the lead heading into the final day, with Ireland’s Shane Lowry four adrift after a third-round 65.
Two people treated in hospital after lightning strike
Play was again delayed for nearly three hours due to what the PGA Tour called a “dangerous weather situation”.
Two people were taken to the hospital Saturday after lightning struck a tree near the course hosting the Travelers Championship.
The home is just north of the fifth green at TPC River Highlands, with Cromwell Police receiving 911 calls around 4.30pm about a lightning strike. When first responders arrived, they found a tree that had been hit and three people who were near it.
Cromwell Fire Department Chief Jason Brade said in a statement that an emergency medical crew treated two people and took them to the hospital for further evaluation. He did not elaborate on their condition. A third person refused treatment.
Lightning is an ever-present danger on golf courses. In 2019, six people were injured when a strike hit a 60-foot (18-meter) pine tree at the Tour Championship.

Afghanistan kept their T20 World Cup semi-final hopes alive by stunning previously unbeaten Australia by 21 runs in a thrilling encounter on Saturday.
Despite Pat Cummins becoming the third bowler in history to claim a hat-trick in successive innings, Afghanistan posted 148-6 after being asked to bat first on a tricky pitch at the Arnos Vale Ground.
Afghanistan pair Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran put on 118 for the highest opening partnership against Australia in a T20 match before Australia’s bowlers rallied late, including Cummins’ second career hat-trick – just two days after his first.
Australia then stumbled with the bat and were all out for 127, with only Glenn Maxwell (59 off 41 balls) coming to grips with the superb Afghanistan bowling attack and the turning wicket.
Man of the match Guldabin Naib took four wickets in an inspired spell in the middle overs to stall Australia’s chase before Azmatullah Omarzai had final wicket Adam Zampa caught in the deep in the final over to complete a stunning win amid jubilant celebrations among the Afghan players and team management.
Pat Cummins became the first player to register a hat-trick in consecutive T20 World Cup matches as he took three wickets in a row against Afghanistan
The victory moves Afghanistan to two points in Group 1 and level with Australia, but behind on net run rate. India lead the group on four points. Bangladesh are bottom after two losses but still have a chance of qualifying for the semifinals.
“It’s a massive win for us as a team and as a nation in the World Cup beating (the) champions,” captain Rashid Khan said.
“It’s so important for us back home and for everyone all around the world. Where Afghanistan people, the Afghans are there, they are badly missing this win and I’m sure they would have been so proud of and they would have enjoyed the game and I think it’s just the beginning now for us.”
Earlier, Gurbaz scored 60 off 49 balls, while Zadran made a steady 51 off 48 balls as they laid a solid platform – helped by some uncharacteristically poor fielding by Australia.
Marcus Stoinis eventually made the breakthrough in the 16th over, dismissing Gurbaz which led to a flurry of wickets as the momentum shifted.
Adam Zampa (2-28) took two wickets in the next over, including Zadran’s, before Pat Cummins again came to the fore. The seam bowler had Rashid Khan (two) caught by Tim David in the deep with the final ball off the 18th over.
Cummins (3-28) returned to bowl the final over of the innings and with his first ball had Karim Janat (13) again caught by David.
For the hat-trick ball, Cummins cleverly disguised a slower delivery which Guldabin Naib could only loft to Glenn Maxwell running in from the boundary to claim the catch.
Australia stumbled early in the chase as it lost Travis Head bowled by Naveen-ul-Haq for no score with the third ball of the innings.
Captain Mitchell Marsh (12) played two big shots before he was Naveen’s second wicket and when David Warner (three) was out to spinner Mohammad Nabi’s first ball the Aussies were in trouble at 32-3 in the sixth over.
Stoinis and Maxwell steadied the Australian innings as they reached 70-3 at the halfway stage.
Gulbadin (4-20) was the eighth bowler used by Afghanistan inside the first 11 overs and it paid a near instant dividend as Stoinis could only sky a pull shot which was caught by Gurbaz.
Gulbadin then removed David (two) and when the allrounder had Maxwell spectacularly caught by Noor Ahmad an upset victory appeared likely.
Australia’s lower-order batters couldn’t find the big hits that the moment demanded either and when veteran Nabi took a catch on the boundary to dismiss Zampa (nine), Afghanistan’s deserved victory was confirmed.

Cameron Young charged into contention at the Travelers Championship after carding a historic ’59 round’ during day three in Connecticut.
Young carded two eagles and seven birdies on his way to a bogey-free 59 at TPC River Highlands, just the 13th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history and the first since Scottie Scheffler’s total during the second round of the Northern Trust in 2020.
The American’s total moves him to 13 under for the tournament and in prime position to challenge for a maiden PGA Tour title, having been a seven-time runner-up without being able to secure a breakthrough victory.
“It was good from the start,” Young said. “I can’t say I was expecting it. I’ve been playing better than my results have shown, but waking up this morning I wasn’t really thinking I’d be five under through four and then keep going! It was a lot of fun to do and I feel like I controlled my mind all day.”
Heading into the weekend 11 strokes behind halfway leader Tom Kim, Young started his third round with back-to-back birdies and then sensationally holed out from 142 yards to eagle the par-four third.
Young rolled in from 20 feet at the fourth and then ended a run of pars by going inches away from a hole-in-one at the par-three eighth, leaving a tap-in birdie to go six under for his round.
The world No 23 added another birdie at the ninth to close a front-nine 28, then took advantage of the par-five 13th and left himself a close-range eagle after a stunning tee shot at the driveable par-four 15th.
Needing to birdie two of the last three holes to match Jim Furyk’s 58 on this course in 2016, he left a seven-footer by the side of the cup at the 16th but hit his approach at the next even closer to get to 11 under.
A further birdie left Young requiring a final-hole birdie to equal the lowest round in PGA Tour history, although he missed the fairway off the final tee and had to hole from 10 feet to save par and close out a bogey-free day.
Who else has carded a 59 round?
Al Geiberger was the first player to card a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour during the 1977 Memphis Classic, with Chip Beck the next to at the 1991 Las Vegas Invitational.

David Duval, Paul Goydos, Stuart Appleby, Furyk (twice), Justin Thomas, Adam Hadwin, Brandt Snedeker, Kevin Chappell and Scheffler are the other players to card rounds of 59 or better in PGA Tour history.
Cristobal del Solar carded a 13-under 57 on the Korn Ferry Tour earlier this season, one of three sub-60 rounds on the second-tier circuit this year. The lowest round in DP World Tour history remains the ’59 round’ shot by Oliver Fisher during the 2018 Portugal Masters.

Jamie Chadwick believes we are “getting closer” to seeing a female driver in Formula 1 after becoming the third woman in the history of Indy NXT to win a race.
Chadwick finished first after starting on pole position for the Indy NXT race at Road America to become the first woman to achieve success on a road course in the US racing series.
Chadwick, in the No 28 VEXT car of Andretti Global, claimed her maiden victory in the feeder series to IndyCar.
She had the race in full control but was forced to show her skill in a two-lap shootout at the end following a red flag and then could finally feel the “relief” of getting a race win under her belt.
Jamie Chadwick became the first woman to win on a road course in Indy NXT for 14 years, and third woman to win in the history of the sport.
“It is always one of those feelings, you get mixed emotions afterwards. The adrenaline wears off and then you get the feeling of relief more than anything else. I am just so, so happy” Chadwick told Sky Sports.
“It wasn’t easy by any means, but from my side I was just really happy to execute the race like we did and just so happy for the team.
“We have been pushing for a result all year and to get that under our belts I am so happy.”
Three-time W Series champion Jamie Chadwick claims victory at the Indy NXT Road America, becoming the first woman to do so in 14 years.
Chadwick, who is also a development driver for Formula 1 team Williams, is enjoying pushing herself in America and believes that, despite work still needing to be done, we are close to seeing a woman “line up on the Formula 1 grid”.
“Formula 1 is the pinnacle of the sport. There is a lot more I need to achieve than one race win at this point but I think we are getting closer,” she said.
“I think what is great is we are seeing the effect in the sport where we are really keen to push more women into it and get more women having success at high levels.
Jamie Chadwick opened up on how it felt to win her first race in the Indy NXT series.
“There is a lot of work to be done, we really need to get more women involved in the sport because there is no reason, in my opinion, we can’t see someone line up on a Formula 1 grid.
“In terms of time, it is too difficult to say at this point but hopefully we are not too far away now.
“There is something in visibility in sport and showcasing to young girls that if they can see it they can be it.
“It is about just giving young girls the opportunity to try the sport in the first place.
“When I first started in karting, it was my older brother that helped me get into it and without him I probably would have never given it a go.
“I went to the kart track and I was the only girl for many of the first few years of my career.”

The USA caused a huge, historic shock in the T20 World Cup with a thrilling Super Over win over Pakistan in Texas.
The game went to the extra over after both sides made 159 in their 20 overs at Grand Prairie Stadium, with tournament co-hosts and debutants USA scoring 14 in the final over to tie Pakistan’s total.
Batting first in the Super Over, the USA then ramped up the pressure on their opponents by putting 18 runs on the board amid some chaotic Pakistan bowling and fielding. Unable to find an answer, Pakistan fell short in their quest with the bat finishing on 13 to hand the USA a famous five-run win.
Having already beaten Canada in their Group A opener last Sunday by seven wickets, the USA now have a great chance of making the Super 8 round.
Pakistan had given themselves plenty to do in the match by falling to 26-3 early on after a making number of errors.
