Salford Red Devils profit from missed conversion from Hull FC’s Ben Reynolds late on to extend winning run to four matches; Marc Sneyd registers five goals on 300th Super League appearance as home side consolidate fifth spot in table – watch every Super League match live on Sky Sports

Salford held off Hull FC to earn their fourth straight win and consolidate fifth place in the Super League table

Ryan Brierley made a try-scoring comeback and Marc Sneyd celebrated his 300th Super League appearance with five vital goals as Salford edged Hull FC 22-20 to register a fourth successive win.

Hull half-back Ben Reynolds missed a 78th-minute conversion to Lewis Martin’s try to send the game to golden point as the Red Devils cemented fifth place in the table.

Full-back Brierley had sat out his team’s three previous victories with a rib injury but returned with a bang against a Hull side still without an away win in 2024 and who sit second bottom of the standings.

Hull led 6-4 in the first half and scored four tries to their hosts’ three in the game but Reynolds failed to improve his team’s final two touchdowns.

A minute’s applause to remember Rob Burrow took place before Super League’s only fixture of the day and there was further recognition of the Leeds Rhinos’ legend on seven minutes as all fans united to sing: ‘There’s only one Rob Burrow.’

The on-field action was less inspiring until Salford made a 27th-minute breakthrough as Deon Cross touched down.

Reynolds scythed through the home defence to register his first try for the Black and Whites and then booted Hull in front but it was all square at half-time as Sneyd kicked a penalty after the hooter.

Tom Briscoe’s off-the-ball challenge on Brierley earned him a yellow card and his temporary absence and a game-ending injury for hooker Danny Houghton was a double blow for Simon Grix’s side.

When Briscoe returned Salford were 18-6 in front thanks to Sneyd’s converted tries for Brierley and centre Chris Hankinson.

Young Hull forward Denive Balmforth provided an instant response with his third try in as many games but when Salford were gifted a cheap penalty on the hour Sneyd took the points on offer to move the Red Devils two scores in front again.

Final-quarter tries for Jordan Lane and Martin kept Hull in contention right until Reynolds’ costly late miss.

What’s next?

Hull FC host city rivals Hull KR on Saturday July 13 (2.55pm, Sky Sports Arena), with Salford visiting Catalans Dragons later the same day (5.25pm, Sky Sports Arena).

Vivianne Miedema: Man City sign Women’s Super League record goalscorer on free transfer after Arsenal exit | Football News

Vivianne Miedema: Man City sign Women’s Super League record goalscorer on free transfer after Arsenal exit | Football News

Manchester City have completed the signing of Vivianne Miedema, who has signed a contract until the summer of 2027.

Clubs across Europe and North America were interested in the forward but the 27-year-old has moved to City on a free transfer after leaving Arsenal at the end of her contract.

Miedema is the WSL’s all-time leading scorer. However, she has started just eight league matches over the past two seasons due to injury, including an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear in December 2022.

Miedema, who joined Arsenal from Bayern Munich in 2017, won the WSL with the Gunners in 2019, as well as the League Cup in 2018, 2023 and 2024.

The Netherlands international’s decision to leave north London was mutual. Miedema was understood to be keen on a fresh challenge while Arsenal are looking to reinvest in their squad.

Upon signing, Miedema said: “The reason I chose City is because they have the same ambitions as me. They want to win the league and titles.

Vivianne Miedema scored on her final Arsenal appearance against Brighton in the Women’s Super League

“Looking to the future, I’ve always said I want to play with the best players in the world and I think City have got that.

“I haven’t played as much football as I would have wished over the past two years, but I think and hope my best years are still to come. I hope I’m going to be able to help the team as much as I can do.

“I am just really excited to be part of the team and for the girls to hopefully help me and get me back to my best. If I get back to my best again then we can achieve really nice things together.

“I do think this is the place to be right now. In the end, it was an easy choice for me.

“I want to challenge myself every day in training but also every single week in the games we play.”

Vivianne Miedema scored her first goal for Arsenal since December 2022 against Liverpool last season

Head coach Gareth Taylor added: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming Viv to City and seeing her flourish over the next three years.

“Our ambition is to compete on the highest stage and for the highest honours, and Viv is aligned to this desire.

“She’s a top talent that I’m excited to work with, as she’s a player I’ve always admired. Viv will be a real asset to the team.”

Miedema also reunites with her Netherlands team-mates Jill Roord – herself coming back from an ACL injury – and Kerstin Casparij.

She will join up with Man City for pre-season training at the end of July.

Miedema joins formidable Man City attack

Sky Sports’ Charlotte Marsh:

“After missing out on the WSL title by goal difference to Chelsea last season, Taylor and his team are trying to make sure that doesn’t happen again this time.

“Manchester City are building quite the potent attacking force. Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly are on either wing, Bunny Shaw is through the middle and Miedema can play in the No. 10 role or just off Shaw.

“That’s before we even talk about the return of Jill Roord, the breakthrough of Jess Park and the calming influence of Yui Hasegawa in central midfield.

Rosie and Mollie Kmita rank Vivianne Miedema’s best Women’s Super League goals

“Miedema’s arrival could also prove to be the best business of the window. Firstly, it’s a free transfer.

“And, despite writing her name repeatedly into WSL history in her seven years at Arsenal, the forward is just 27 and, arguably, hitting her peak years.

“She too will have something to prove after 18 months of injury disappointments and setbacks. That should be a stark warning for other WSL teams.

“It is time for Miedema to see if she can shine elsewhere in the WSL – and win more silverware along the way.”

Netball Super League: ‘Huge rivals’ Manchester Thunder and Loughborough Lightning set for Netball Super League final | Netball News

Defending champions Loughborough Lightning and four-time winners Manchester Thunder meet in Saturday’s Netball Super League, with former Former England international Tamsin Greenway looking ahead to a ‘incredible’ matchup in front of a record 8,000 sell-out crowd in Birmingham.

Watch the final – and the third-place playoff between Severn Stars and London Pulse – for free live on skysports.com and Sky Sports App

What can we expect from the final?

It’s a huge match, a massive one for these two teams who have become huge rivals over the last few years.

It’s going to be a really big one. They’ve both won one and lost one to each other this season and it’s kind of the final everyone was expecting.

Image:
Loughborough Lightning are the defending Netball Super League champions

Manchester Thunder go in as favourites.

This was the same matchup last year in the semi-final where they lost out. They’ve recruited well since, they’ve got the best attacking record in the league, the best defensive record and only lost one game all season.

However, that one game they lost this year was against Loughborough Lightning… although you have to go back to March to find that.

A history of Netball Super League champions have been crowned…who will win and be crowned Grand Final champions 2024?

Lightning are reigning champions. They’re consistently good and they always arrive at the big occasions.

They had the the tougher semi-final to come through. They they played London Pulse, who everyone kind of thought would sneak in – they’ve got a young, exciting group and they’d lost them twice in the rounds but Lightning got over the line when it mattered.

It’s going to be a really intriguing 60 minutes battle.

Who are the ones to watch?

What has been great is to see is the growth of some of the players across this year. The two teams are littered with international stars.

You look at the form of Beth Cobden, the Loughborough Lightning wing defence and the form of current England international Imogen Allison for Manchester, they were both named Player of the Match in their semi-finals.

Highlights of the Super League semi-final between Manchester Thunder and Severn Stars

They are crucial to how these teams get about and they’re up against the two best wing attacks in the league this year.

You’ve also got the experience of Nat Metcalf, the current England Roses wing attack for Manchester Thunder.

I think it comes down to who gets on top of each other out of those players.

Stars or Pulse from third-place playoff?

This is a really strange one because London Pulse were absolutely gutted about not making the final last week.

They went in to that semi-final with two wins over Loughborough, thought they get over the line again but they didn’t and were devastated. They’re a really young group, but full of of England players and superstars.

Highlights of the Super League final between Loughborough Lightning against London Pulse

For Severn Stars this is their first ever Finals appearance, so it’s slightly different. They lost but their loss to Manchester Thunder was kind of expected.

I’ve seen this happen before where they get up for the big occasion and want to get that third spot.

Pulse have got to put all of that aside and go for it. On paper, London Pulse should come out on top, but I wouldn’t write off Severn Stars.

Record 8,000 capacity crowd expected

It’s absolutely incredible. The last few years, the uptake in attendances for the big games has been huge.

We’re moving forward into the professional era, going into the big arenas, and this is just another statement as to why that needed to happen.

Eight thousand people in the Resorts Arena at Birmingham, the atmosphere is going to be incredible.

It’s going to be an amazing event… to have that atmosphere and play in front of that crowd just shows where the sport is heading.”

Blue 41-10 Chiefs: Caleb Clarke hat-trick lifts Blues in Super Rugby Pacific Final | Rugby Union News

Caleb Clarke’s three tries lifted the Auckland-based Blues to a 41-10 win over Hamilton’s Chiefs in an all-New Zealand Super Rugby Pacific final.

Clarke struck in the first half, helping the Blues run out to a 20-3 lead by half-time, and continued in fine form scoring twice more in the second half.

The Blues dominated in rainy conditions to win a Super Rugby title for the first time since 2003.

Akira Ioane scored the Blues’ first try, provided the last pass in Clarke’s second try, and won the line-out which led to Clarke’s third try, before leaving the field to a standing ovation in the 78th minute.

“That was a tough one and we had so many boys who stepped up,” Clarke said. “It was a big occasion, especially for Akira, the coaches who have come in for the first time and a group that has been together for so long,” Clarke said.

“It’s going to take a while to sink in but we finally got the job done.”

Blues’ captain Patrick Tuipulotu played through a knee injury from two weeks ago, and his frequent carries were a large part of the Blues’ dominant performance, before he limped off the field in the 58th minute.

Former Scotland and Fiji coach Vern “Stern Vern” Cotter has been credited with transforming the Blues this season, and bringing a ruthlessness that had been missing.

Chiefs skipper Luke Jacobson said: “Credit to the Blues, they came out and set it from the get-go and made it very difficult for us.”

USA vs South Africa: Andries Gous’s unbeaten 80 in vain as co-hosts beaten in first Super 8s game | Cricket News

South Africa held off a late threat from co-hosts USA as they completed a nervy 18-run victory at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua to kick off the Super 8s stage of the Men’s T20 World Cup.

Chasing 195 for victory, USA’s Andries Gous (73) made a spectacular 33-ball fifty to give his side hope of pulling off another famous victory, smashing three sixes in the 18th over to slash their required total to 28 from 12 balls.

However, the South African-born Gous was unable to get his side over the line after some tight bowling from Kagiso Rabada (3-18) and Anrich Nortje (1-37) at the death held them to 176-6.

South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada (L) celebrates the dismissal of USA’s Harmeet Singh

Earlier, South Africa’s Quinton de Kock (74) smashed seven boundaries and five sixes during his outing, hitting his highest score of the tournament as he shared a terrific second-wicket partnership worth 110 runs alongside his captain Aiden Markram (46).

Heinrich Klaasen (36no) and Tristan Stubbs (20no) shared an unbeaten 53-run partnership to trouble the co-hosts even further and help South Africa post 194-4.

USA’s left-arm bowler Saurabh Netravalkar (2-21), who bowled the famous Super Over during their historic victory against Pakistan, and spinner Harmeet Singh (2-24) both picked up two wickets apiece but were unable to fully eliminate the threat of South Africa’s big hitters.

The victory means South Africa move to the top of Group 2 with two points with USA behind in second place.

T20 World Cup Super 8s: When are England playing, who else has qualified and how does format work? | Cricket News

T20 World Cup Super 8s: When are England playing, who else has qualified and how does format work? | Cricket News

England squeezed into the Super 8s at the T20 World Cup to keep their title defence alive.

Here is all you need to know ahead of round two in the Caribbean, including when and where England play, the full fixture list, and how the format works.

Who are these ‘Super 8’ and what happens next?

Other than England, the teams still standing are Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, India, South Africa, USA and West Indies, with the eight sides split into two groups of four.

  • Group 1 – India, Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh
  • Group 2 – USA, West Indies, South Africa, England

Sky Sports’ Nasser Hussain believes England have everything in place to qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup

In the Super 8s, each side plays the others in their pool once with the top two in each group reaching the semi-finals.

The winners of Group 1 will play the second-placed side in Group 2 in the semi-finals and vice versa.

Which Super 8 group teams advanced into was pre-determined to help with scheduling.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand were the three seeded teams not to qualify for the second round, beaten to spots by USA, Bangladesh and Afghanistan respectively.

England are still in with a chance of successfully defending the T20 World Cup title they won in Australia in 2022

When and where do England play?

Thursday, June 20: vs West Indies – Gros Islet, Saint Lucia (1.30am)
Friday, June 21: vs South Africa – Gros Islet, Saint Lucia (3.30pm)
Sunday, June 23: vs USA – Bridgetown, Barbados (3.30pm)

All times are UK and Ireland.

England scraped into the Super 8s, you say?

They sure did.

A rain-off against Scotland in Barbados – a match in which their opponents pounced on bowling and fielding errors to reach 90-0 from 10 overs before the weather had the final say – was followed by a 36-run defeat to Australia at the same venue as they conceded a whopping 70 runs in the first five overs.

Highlights of England’s win over Oman at the T20 World Cup, as they sprinted to a chase of 48 in just 3.1 overs

Jos Buttler’s side’s hopes of progressing into the next phase were hanging by the proverbial thread but they then dismantled Oman – razing the associate nation for 47 before completing the run chase in just 19 balls to, crucially, take their net run rate above Scotland’s.

They then managed to beat the rain and Namibia in Antigua on Saturday, comfortably winning a 10-over-a-side encounter by 41 runs on DLS after initially fearing a tournament-ending washout, before attention turned to Australia vs Scotland in St Lucia hours later.

Highlights of England’s much-needed win over Namibia at the T20 World Cup as they triumphed by 41 runs on DLS

An Australia win and England were through. Anything else and they were out.

Buttler’s boys would have been jittery as Scotland posted 180-5, even more so when Australia needed 89 runs from the final seven overs, but the 2021 champions then went into overdrive, with Travis Head (68 off 49), Marcus Stoinis (59 off 29) and Tim David (24no off 14) taking Australia to victory with two balls to spare.

After numerous scares, England had advanced.

T20 World Cup: England must show why they are world champions after reaching Super 8s | Cricket News

T20 World Cup: England must show why they are world champions after reaching Super 8s | Cricket News

Sky Sports Cricket expert Nasser Hussain reflects on England’s qualification through to the Super 8s stage of the Men’s T20 World Cup, looks ahead to the game against the West Indies on Wednesday night and says who he’s backing to make the semi-finals…

England, out of all the sides, have probably had the least cricket at this tournament. But the key thing was getting through to the Super 8s.

They’re world champions and they’ve now got to show why they are world champions.

Highlights of England’s much-needed win over Namibia at the T20 World Cup as they triumphed by 41 runs on DLS

They had a quarter of a game against Scotland, a full game against Australia… and then two more very short games, because they won so convincingly against Oman and then had another rain-affected win over Namibia.

Ahead of England and Namibia’s vital clash, Nasser Hussain, Eoin Morgan and Ian Ward got soaked in Antigua

Against Scotland, who knows whether they’ll have chased down that score without the rain… but they weren’t overly convincing in the field and with the ball in that first game in Barbados. I think they’ve put that right since.

They got walloped by Australia, but that can happen to anyone – Australia are a mighty outfit in any format.

There’s then the fear of losing, the fear of going out. That’s why England did such a good job in Antigua, where they’ve been convincing in their last two games – they were in the last-chance saloon and had to produce their ‘A’ game against two associate nations and they did that.

Highlights of England’s win over Oman at the T20 Cricket World Cup, as they sprinted to a chase of 48 in just 3.1 overs in Antigua

‘England won’t take any team lightly in Super 8s’

They probably haven’t had as much time in the middle as they would like… but in the space of five days coming up, they’ve got three games, and I think they’ll enjoy the rhythm of actually playing cricket.

That’s the case for a few teams going into the Super 8s… the Indian batters, who had to play in New York a lot, their top order, the South African top order, they go into this stage without many runs under their belt because batting was so difficult.

Ravi Shastri could hardly contain his excitement ahead of India’s T20 World Cup clash with Pakistan in New York as he presided over the toss

I’ve not minded the pitches in this tournament. In the IPL, it was geared too much towards batting and there were too many big scores, sixes and fours.

Here, it’s gone a little bit more in favour of the bowlers. In New York, I think that pitch went too far in the favour of the bowlers, but Dallas was good, Barbados was decent and I’d say St Lucia will probably be the pick of the lot if you’re a batter.

I don’t think there is an easier side of the draw in the Super 8s. We are now in a situation where every side will be expecting to get through to the semi-finals.

The shorter the game, the shorter the format, anything can happen. And as we’ve seen already, there’s been some incredible upsets – the associate nations have done themselves proud, they’ve played a lot of good cricket.

Highlights from the USA’s game against Pakistan at the T20 World Cup, as the Americans pulled off one of the tournament’s greatest upsets

As Pakistan found out, having lost in a Super Over against the USA, and as Canada found out against them in the opening game, every side has struggled against the USA – they are a very good outfit.

England will not be taking any team lightly. It will be a tough game and they will be hoping when they go into that one that the job is already done.

‘St Lucia surface suits England’s style’

They first face the West Indies though, the hosts, and it will be a great atmosphere in St Lucia on Wednesday night.

But a big crowd supporting the opposition won’t upset them too much. These England players have played in the IPL, they’ve played in big games, in World Cup finals.

Plus, they will be pleased to be in St Lucia. It’s a good pitch, which suits their style of play – they have batters in the likes of Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow, who want to go hard at the ball… although the West Indies, as we know, also have some very big hitters.

England’s Phil Salt speaks to Sky Sports about the T20 World Cup, opening the batting with Jos Buttler and his hopes of a Test call-up

It was very important in England’s last game that Bairstow and Harry Brook played really well, putting on that wonderful partnership. That’s another tick for England that those two have had time in the middle going into this game.

They’ve pace in their armoury as well with Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, plus Adil Rashid, the No 1 ranked T20 bowler… they’ve got everything in place.

Archer has impressed so far. He’s got great rhythm and he’s adapted to conditions… he’s a very smart cricketer. It’s not all about pace, pace, pace.

Jofra Archer strikes early for England as Phil Salt takes an excellent low catch in their T20 World Cup clash with Oman

Liam Livingstone is the one concern for the West Indies game, with that side strain of his – it’s not something that is just going to disappear in the next couple of days.

If he doesn’t get through the fitness test, I would play Sam Curran – he’s the like-for-like replacement. It gives you another all-round option and another left-hander option.

We are now getting into the business end of the tournament. There are no easy games and England will have to be at their best if they want to qualify for the semi-finals – it’s just getting your skills right, putting in a performance and getting on a roll.

They are the world champions in this format and when other sides look at England, they’ll be looking at that long batting lineup and thinking: ‘we had better be at our best’.

South Africa are a good side, but I’ll go with England and the host nation the West Indies to make it from their group.

England are in Group 2 for the eight-team second stage of the tournament, alongside the West Indies, USA and South Africa.

London Broncos 6-52 St Helens: Daryl Clark scores quickfire hat-trick as Saints crush Super League’s bottom team | Rugby League News

London Broncos 6-52 St Helens: Daryl Clark scores quickfire hat-trick as Saints crush Super League’s bottom team | Rugby League News

Daryl Clark’s eight-minute hat-trick helped Super League high-flyers St Helens run out 52-6 winners against London Broncos at the Twickenham Stoop.

Clark managed three quickfire scores early in the second half to pile on the disappointment for the Broncos, who failed to build on their two-point tally at the foot of the table.

St Helens showed signs of their creative best early on and Moses Mbye’s quality was on full display when a well-executed kick found Waqa Blake who grounded for the first score in the seventh minute.

Highlights from the Betfred Super League clash between London Broncos and St Helens.

Saints relished the physical encounter as the northern club were patient in attack, opting for midfield carries which took a toll on the Broncos defenders.

Their patience was rewarded when they scored another try, an excellent exchange of quick passes ending with Blake diving into the right-hand corner to claim his second. Mark Percival converted from a difficult angle as his side stormed into a 12-0 advantage.

Mbye, who had been Saints’ star man up to that point, produced another piece of magic, this time showing a turn of pace to break through the defence before combining with Sione Mata’utia and Lewis Dodd for the latter to touch down.

Percival made it three from three with the boot before Mbye grabbed a deserved try for himself. The Australian opted against spreading the ball into the wide space, dummied and burrowed his way into a gap to score.

The Broncos were having a day to forget as they were limited to a handful of chances in south London. Mike Eccles’ side did manage a break on 33 minutes but a spirited recovery from Blake ensured half-time arrived with the score 24-0.

Smart play from James Bell set up another score early in the second half. Bell drew the tackle, freeing his hands and delivering a quick offload to the surging Clark, who managed to get in on the action.

Saints hooker Daryl Clark goes over three tries at the start of second-half against London for an incredibly fast hat-trick.

And the hooker did not have to wait long for his second which came in the 50th minute. Clark combined with Bell once more as he stormed the Broncos’ scattered back line.

As the Saints fans serenaded Clark to the tune of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark”, he completed his hat-trick – taking advantage of open space in midfield and showing magnificent speed to touch down. Percival extended his perfect kicking record to seven goals.

It seemed too easy at times for St Helens as they simply wandered into spaces left unoccupied by bottom-of-the-table London. It was a reminder why the Wimbledon club have struggled to adapt to life in the top flight.

Saints extended their lead to 46-0 through the powerful Konrad Hurrell as Broncos began to fall apart. Percival missed his first kick of the evening before scoring himself and making it eight conversions from nine.

London finally managed a consolation score through Lee Kershaw, Oliver Leyland with the extras, but Saints ran out convincing victors.

England beat Namibia in rain-hit T20 World Cup match and make Super 8s as Australia defeat Scotland | Cricket News

England beat the weather and Namibia at the T20 World Cup and went on to qualify for the Super 8s following Australia’s win over Scotland.

Defending champions England rose to second in Group B, ahead of Scotland on net run-rate, after a comfortable 41-run triumph on DLS in Antigua in a game reduced to 10-overs a side by rain, one in which Harry Brook (47no off 20 balls) top-scored.

Jos Buttler’s side then needed Australia to defeat Scotland in St Lucia hours later and that duly happened, with the 2021 winners overhauling Scotland’s 180-5 with two balls to spare in a competitive contest.

England 122-5 from 10 overs: Harry Brook (47no off 20), Jonny Bairstow (31 off 18), Moeen Ali (16 off 6), Liam Livingstone (13no off 4); Ruben Trumpelmann (2-31), David Wiese (1-6)

Namibia 84-3 from 10 overs: Michael van Lingen (33 off 29), David Wiese (27 off 12); Jofra Archer (1-15), Chris Jordan (1-19)

England have fought back excellently at the T20 World Cup since an opening rain-off against Scotland in Barbados was followed by a 36-run loss to Australia at the same venue four days later.

They rolled Oman for 47 in Antigua before sprinting to victory in 19 balls to take their net-run rate above Scotland’s and were ruthless against Namibia at North Sound once the wet weather that delayed the game by three hours and threatened an abandonment – a result that would have eliminated England – cleared.

England made a nervy start in Antigua with Jos Buttler and Phil Salt out cheaply, before the middle order fired

Buttler (0) and Phil Salt (11) fell early as England slipped to 13-2 but Brook and Jonny Bairstow (31 off 18) clubbed 56 from 30 balls in partnership before Moeen Ali (16 off six) and Liam Livingstone (13no off four) chipped in with enterprising cameos.

Livingstone nailed his first two deliveries for six in Ruben Trumpelmann’s final over, including a one-handed effort over deep backward square.

Namibia, whose target was adjusted to 126 with the match originally 11-overs-a-side before a second short rain delay trimmed an over off, could make only 84-3 in reply, although David Wiese (27 off 12) had fun, cracking Adil Rashid (0-29) for back-to-back sixes, in what is set to be his final appearance for his country.

Wiese had earlier impressed with the ball, recording figures of 1-6 from two overs at the start of England’s knock and having Salt caught behind off a knuckleball, while Trumpelmann (2-31) bowled Buttler with a vicious in-swinger.

England’s middle order fired, though, and their bowlers then proved tough to get away, save for Rashid’s over Wiese tonked for 20, with Jofra Archer taking 1-15, Chris Jordan 1-19, Reece Topley 0-6 and Sam Curran 0-13.

England join co-hosts West Indies and USA plus South Africa in Group 2 of the Super 8s, with Australia to compete in Group 1 alongside India, Afghanistan and one of Bangladesh or Netherlands.

‘England stayed tight after defeat to Australia’

Speaking after his side’s win and before Australia beat Scotland, England skipper Buttler said: “It’s a big relief, a stressful day, but we put in a good performance. We’ve done all we can do.”

Team-mate Bairstow said: “There was a lot of chat about the net run-rate but we’ve overcome that and the other challenges put in front of us. As a group, we’ve stuck together really tightly.

“That Australia game was a tough game and they outplayed us in that, fair play to them. But we have responded.”

England qualify for T20 World Cup Super 8s as Australia knock out Scotland after huge scare in St Lucia | Cricket News

England are through to the T20 World Cup Super 8s after Australia knocked out Scotland with a last-over win in St Lucia.

England defeated Namibia in a rain-affected match in Antigua on Saturday to stay in contention for a spot in the second round, but needed already-qualified Australia to see off Scotland on Sunday or their neighbours would progress instead.

Scotland posted 180-5 after profiting from six dropped catches by Australia, with Brandon McMullen smoking six sixes in a knock of 60 from 34 balls and skipper Richie Berrington making 42 not out off 31.

Australia were then 2-1 and 60-3 in the chase as David Warner (1), Mitchell Marsh (8) and Glenn Maxwell (11) fell cheaply but they eventually triumphed with two balls to spare as Tim David (24no off 14) hit Brad Wheal for six to clinch a five-wicket victory, having been dropped by Chris Sole with three runs required.

Travis Head (68 off 49) and Marcus Stoinis (59 off 29) thumped 80 from 44 deliveries for the fifth wicket, before falling in the 16th and 17 overs respectively – Head departing after nailing paceman Safyaan Sharif (2-42) for three sixes and Stonis ousted after successive fours off spin bowler Mark Watt (2-34).

Scotland 180-5 from 20 overs: Brandon McMullen (60 off 34 balls), Richie Berrington (42no off 31), George Munsey (35 off 23); Glenn Maxwell (2-44), Adam Zampa (1-30)

Australia 186-5 from 19.4 overs: Travis Head (68 off 49), Marcus Stoinis (59 off 29), Tim David (24no off 14); Mark Watt (2-34), Safyaan Sharif (2-42)

Australia were left needing 26 runs from the last three overs and David promptly crunched Wheal for two fours in the 18th before tonking the same bowler over the ropes at deep midwicket towards the end of the 20th to break Scotland’s hearts and keep defending champions England in the competition.

Scotland – who will host Australia for a three-match T20 international series in Edinburgh in September – will be gutted by their exit but should be proud of how they played throughout.

Berrington’s men racked up 90-0 from 10 overs against England before that game was abandoned, while they then recorded comfortable victories over Namibia and Oman before registering the highest T20I total against Australia by an associate team.

Bangladesh will claim that place if they beat Nepal in their final first-round match in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday but a defeat would keep Netherlands in the mix, although the Dutch would need to beat Sri Lanka in St Lucia on the same day and overhaul a big net run-rate deficit to advance from Group D.
