Wimbledon: Andy Murray beaten in men’s doubles alongside brother Jamie | Tennis News

Andy Murray was given a hero’s reception as he began his final Wimbledon
alongside his brother Jamie but the Centre Court crowd could not inspire them to victory.

Playing together in men’s doubles at the All England Club for the first time, the pair had hoped to write a memorable last chapter in an incredible story.

But the two-time former singles champion and seven-time Grand Slam doubles champion Jamie were beaten 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 by Australian duo Rinky Hijikata and John Peers.

Murray’s final rodeo on the most important stage of all has arrived. Denied the chance to play singles by his troublesome back, the Scot fittingly signed up for a fraternal pairing before adding mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu.

The excitement fizzing around Centre Court was reminiscent of the atmosphere before a final rather than a first-round doubles match, which are usually relegated to the outside courts in the gloaming.

The brothers’ father Willie made a rare appearance in their support box along with mother Judy, Andy’s wife Kim and his oldest two daughters, eight-year-old Sophia and six-year-old Edie.

As the doors opened to welcome the players on to the court, the packed crowd rose together to acclaim the two-time singles champion.

The tennis seemed almost incidental, but it would go against everything that has made Andy so loved and respected if his main priority was not trying to win the match.

It took less than three games for the 37-year-old to wince and hold his lower back after an awkward movement but he quickly shrugged it off, and there was nothing to choose between the pairs until the tie-break, when the Australian duo saved a set point before taking their first opportunity.

A collective groan grew louder when Andy faced three break points in the opening game of the second set but he saved all of them and then let out a huge roar when the brothers clinched the first break of serve.

The Murrays are unbeaten together in Davis Cup but the last of those matches came nearly eight years ago and they were not always in sync here. A break up quickly shifted to a break down and, soon after, an early exit.

“It was really special, we never got the chance to do it before, the way it worked out there was a chance this year, he asked me and it was a bit of a race against time to get out here, it physically wasn’t easy but I’m glad we were able to get out here and do it one time together,” said Andy.

County Championship: England’s new boy Jamie Smith hits hundred for Surrey on tough day | Cricket News

County Championship: England’s new boy Jamie Smith hits hundred for Surrey on tough day | Cricket News

Jamie Smith produced the perfect dress rehearsal for his England debut on day one of Surrey’s top-of-the-table Vitality County Championship clash with Essex.

Named on Sunday morning as the only wicketkeeper in England’s 14-man squad for the first Test against the West Indies a week on Wednesday, Smith (100) struck his second century of the season.

The 23-year-old hit two sixes and 14 fours during his outing as the hosts reached 248-8 on a rain-shortened day at The Oval.

Keaton Jennings’ (183no) fourth hundred of the campaign steered Lancashire to 344-8 against Nottinghamshire at Southport after the visitors threatened to take charge following lunch.

Lyndon James (3-53) shone with a three-for as a sell-out crowd were denied the opportunity of seeing James Anderson in action for Lancashire one more time.

Hampshire skipper James Vince (149no) made his second century in a week against Kent at Utilita Bowl to help his side recover from 56-3 to end the day 310-3, alongside wicketkeeper-batter Ben Brown (106no) who also hit a century.

Warwickshire fought back against Somerset at Taunton with Michael Burgess’ (126no) century helping the Bears recover from 40-4 to 373-8 at the close of play.

Somerset seamer Migael Pretorius (4-72) finished on a four-fer whilst Jack Leach (2-69) earned two scalps.

Wickets clattered at Chester-le-Street as Durham were all out for 190 with England’s Test captain Ben Stokes (56) reaching a half-century.

Stokes (1-23) removed Worcestershire skipper Libby (13) as the hosts were bowled out for 112 in reply with Matthew Potts (4-29) and Ben Raine (3-33) taking the bulk of the wickets. Durham reached 33-3 at the close to carve out a lead of 111.

Division Two

In Division Two, Sussex’s Ollie Robinson (4-42) bounced back from being overlooked for England’s Test squad against Northamptonshire.

Robinson finished with a four-fer as the hosts were dismissed for 97 on an eventful day at Northampton.

On a day which saw 22 wickets fall, Sussex had themselves been bowled out for 143 with Jack White (4-23) taking four as the visitors lost six wickets for 47 runs in 19 overs – and closed at 83-2 and a lead of 129.

Yorkshire’s Sri Lanka pace bowler Vishwa Fernando (5-30) helped skittle Derbyshire for 76 at Chesterfield with the help of Jordan Thompson (4-31) as Derbyshire subsided on a challenging surface in less than 28 overs.

Yorkshire turned the screw with James Wharton (116no) racing to a maiden first-class hundred before bad light ended play leaving the tourists on 283-5 with a commanding lead of 207.

Ben Mike’s (5-22) produced a career-best spell to enable Leicestershire to dismiss Middlesex for 86.

Loan signing Ben Green (4-28) also posted personal-best figures with only Leus Du Plooy (28) and Sam Robson (10) reaching double figures.

Leicestershire had earlier made 179 with Lewis Goldsworthy (41) top scoring and reached stumps at 40-1 in their second innings, 133 ahead.

Gloucestershire recovered from 88-8 at lunch to post 179 in their first innings against Glamorgan at Cheltenham.

Marchant de Lange (46no) shared a record-breaking last-wicket stand of 75 with Ajeet Singh Dale (32) as Glamorgan’s Timm van der Gugten (5-59) returned season-best figure.

Glamorgan finished an astonishing day 133-7, with Gloucestershire’s overseas all-rounder Beau Webster (3-16) enjoying a three-wicket burst in 12 balls.

England vs West Indies: Jamie Smith and Dillon Pennington receive maiden squad call-ups for first two Tests | Cricket News

England vs West Indies: Jamie Smith and Dillon Pennington receive maiden squad call-ups for first two Tests | Cricket News

Nottinghamshire seamer Dillon Pennington and Surrey batter Jamie Smith have been named in England’s Test squad for their first two matches against West Indies.

It represents maiden call-ups for the pair at this level, while Surrey seamer Gus Atkinson is the other uncapped player to feature having been part of the squad for the Test tour of India earlier in the year.

Smith looks set to keep wicket for England, with Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes not included in the squad, while Warwickshire seamer Chris Woakes is back in the fold for the first time since July 2023.

England kick off the series on July 10 at Lord’s before heading to Trent Bridge on July 18, followed by a trip to Edgbaston for the third and final Test on July 26, all live on Sky Sports Cricket.

Smith, 23, has been in outstanding form for Surrey in County Championship Division One this season, scoring 507 runs at an average of 50.70 to earn his likely Test debut.

Pennington, 25, has taken 29 County Championship wickets for Notts at an average of 23.03 following his move from Worcestershire earlier this year.

Michael Holding was full of praise for James Anderson after he announced he will be retiring following the first Test against West Indies at Lord’s

The opening Test will mark the last for James Anderson as he prepares to close the curtain on a remarkable Test career.

It comes after the 41-year-old became the first seam bowler in history, and just the third bowler ever, to reach 700 Test wickets behind Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan against India back in March.

“The first Test of the summer is always a special moment, but it will be extra poignant with it being Jimmy’s (Anderson) last Test before he retires,” said ECB managing director for England men’s cricket Rob Key. “He has given everything to the sport since his Test debut in 2003. We all would like to wish him well as he walks out at Lord’s for the last time for England.

“We are looking forward to getting the season under way against a strong West Indies side in what will be an excellent Test series.”

Anderson made his international debut in December 2002 and his Test bow in May 2003, with his 187 Test appearances another England record and only beaten by Sachin Tendulkar’s 200 for India.

He played in 194 ODIs and 19 T20s before his international white-ball career ended in 2015 – the same year he overtook Sir Ian Botham’s 383 dismissals to become England’s record Test wicket-taker, then in 2018 overhauled Glenn McGrath’s total of 563 Test wickets to become the most prolific fast bowler of all time.

England Men’s Test squad for first two matches vs West Indies:

Ben Stokes (Durham) (Captain), James Anderson (Lancashire) (First Test only), Gus Atkinson (Surrey), Shoaib Bashir (Somerset), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Dan Lawrence (Surrey), Dillon Pennington (Nottinghamshire), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Matthew Potts (Durham), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jamie Smith (Surrey), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).

Watch England’s Test summer as it begins with a three-match series against the West Indies, live on Sky Sports; Jamie Smith is handed debut in James Anderson’s farewell at Lord’s (July 10-14) followed by further matches at Trent Bridge (July 18-22) and Edgbaston (July 26-30)

England captain Jamie George savouring challenge that awaits against ‘one of world’s best’ in New Zealand | Football News

England captain Jamie George savouring challenge that awaits against ‘one of world’s best’ in New Zealand | Football News

England captain Jamie George believes this summer’s tour of New Zealand will provide priceless experience and examination for Steve Borthwick’s developing side.

England face New Zealand in Dunedin on July 6 before concluding the two-Test series against the All Blacks at Eden Park on July 13 – both live on Sky Sports.

After Saturday’s comprehensive victory in Japan, George is savouring leading England into battle against the three-time World Cup winners.

“We’ve got so much respect for everything New Zealand do for rugby worldwide,” George told TVNZ.

“We want to make sure we are the best team we possibly can be. In order to do that, you have to play against the best teams, and New Zealand are certainly one of those.

“It’s a huge challenge, we know how big that’s going to be.

“I think we’ve set the tone with the performance we had in Japan. Preparations are going really well so far, and the squad are looking good going into this two-match series.”

  • Saturday July 13 – vs New Zealand (8.05am), live on Sky Sports

George and his England team-mates took time out of their schedule to help out at a foodbank in West Auckland run by former All Black great Sir Michael Jones.

The England captain is relishing being back in New Zealand, having been part of the British and Irish Lions tour in 2017, and urged his team-mates to embrace every aspect of the rugby-obsessed nation.

“Rugby is often a religion over here,” George added. “Just how much the Kiwi public love rugby, and the passion they generate is absolutely amazing.

“My message to the team is to soak it in, love it, and enjoy it. This is what rugby is all about, coming on tours like this to hostile places and trying to compete against the best. That is what we’re trying to do.”

Jamie Chadwick ‘getting closer to F1’ after historic US win in Indy NXT series | F1 News

Jamie Chadwick ‘getting closer to F1’ after historic US win in Indy NXT series | F1 News

Jamie Chadwick believes we are “getting closer” to seeing a female driver in Formula 1 after becoming the third woman in the history of Indy NXT to win a race.

Chadwick finished first after starting on pole position for the Indy NXT race at Road America to become the first woman to achieve success on a road course in the US racing series.

Chadwick, in the No 28 VEXT car of Andretti Global, claimed her maiden victory in the feeder series to IndyCar.

She had the race in full control but was forced to show her skill in a two-lap shootout at the end following a red flag and then could finally feel the “relief” of getting a race win under her belt.

Jamie Chadwick became the first woman to win on a road course in Indy NXT for 14 years, and third woman to win in the history of the sport.

“It is always one of those feelings, you get mixed emotions afterwards. The adrenaline wears off and then you get the feeling of relief more than anything else. I am just so, so happy” Chadwick told Sky Sports.

“It wasn’t easy by any means, but from my side I was just really happy to execute the race like we did and just so happy for the team.

“We have been pushing for a result all year and to get that under our belts I am so happy.”

Three-time W Series champion Jamie Chadwick claims victory at the Indy NXT Road America, becoming the first woman to do so in 14 years.

Chadwick, who is also a development driver for Formula 1 team Williams, is enjoying pushing herself in America and believes that, despite work still needing to be done, we are close to seeing a woman “line up on the Formula 1 grid”.

“Formula 1 is the pinnacle of the sport. There is a lot more I need to achieve than one race win at this point but I think we are getting closer,” she said.

“I think what is great is we are seeing the effect in the sport where we are really keen to push more women into it and get more women having success at high levels.

Jamie Chadwick opened up on how it felt to win her first race in the Indy NXT series.

“There is a lot of work to be done, we really need to get more women involved in the sport because there is no reason, in my opinion, we can’t see someone line up on a Formula 1 grid.

“In terms of time, it is too difficult to say at this point but hopefully we are not too far away now.

“There is something in visibility in sport and showcasing to young girls that if they can see it they can be it.

“It is about just giving young girls the opportunity to try the sport in the first place.

“When I first started in karting, it was my older brother that helped me get into it and without him I probably would have never given it a go.

“I went to the kart track and I was the only girl for many of the first few years of my career.”

Jamie Chadwick: British driver to start on pole position for Indy NXT race at Road America live on Sky Sports | F1 News

Britain’s Jamie Chadwick will start on pole position for the Indy NXT race at Road America, which is live on Sky Sports Mix on Sunday at 6.05pm.

Chadwick was claiming her maiden pole position in Indy NXT, which is a feeder series to IndyCar, and is just the third woman to achieve that feat.

In May, the 26-year-old became the first woman to stand on the podium in Indy NXT when she took third place at Indianapolis.

She will look to stand on the top step of the podium after Sunday’s 20-lap race, which begins at 6.05 on Sky Sports Mix. Viewers with a Sky box can tune into Sky Sports Mix for free and can watch the IndyCar race at Road America at 8.30pm on the same channel.

“I’m so happy. We struggled a little bit this weekend chasing balance. When [team-mate) Louis [Foster] did the lap he did, I knew we would have a good car,” said Chadwick.

“Track conditions improving, this is our shot in our group, as well. I really thought we could make the most of this opportunity. It’s going to be a tough race, but I’m confident in what we can do.”

Chadwick also launched a new initiative in an attempt to increase female participation in grassroots motorsport earlier this year.

The three-time W Series champion partnered with Daytona Motorsport in a year-long commitment to provide free karting and mentorship for girls.

She is the UK’s most decorated active female motorsport driver, having dominated all three years of the W Series before crossing over to the fiercely-competitive Indy NXT series.

Chadwick is also part of F1 team Williams’ driver academy, and is taking on a mentoring role with their F1 representative Lia Block this season in F1 Academy.

Leicester City transfer news: Jamie Vardy signs new one-year contract while Jannik Vestergaard commits until summer 2027 | Football News

Leicester City transfer news: Jamie Vardy signs new one-year contract while Jannik Vestergaard commits until summer 2027 | Football News

Veteran striker Jamie Vardy has signed a new one-year contract at Leicester while Jannik Vestergaard has put pen-to-paper on a new deal which sees the defender remain at the King Power Stadium until summer 2027.

Vardy signed from Fleetwood in 2012, and the 37-year-old will extend his stay at the King Power into a 13th season after agreeing a deal for the 2024/25 campaign.

The former England international scored 20 goals in 37 appearances as the Foxes won promotion to the Premier League in the 23/24 campaign.

Vardy said: “To get the numbers that I did [last season], I’m delighted with it, but there’s still more to come.

“I look after myself. I’ve always said that age is just a number. My legs feel fine so that’s why I carry on until my legs say, ‘That’s it, game over’. There will be a day when that comes, but that’s not right now.

“We look forward to another season in the Premier League and seeing what we can do. One hundred per cent, it’s the best league in the world. That’s where you want to be playing your football.”

Vardy has scored 190 goals in 464 games for the club and has won the Premier League and FA Cup.

Jamie Vardy couldn’t resist pulling off a slide across the surface at Deepdale after Leicester sealed the Championship title

But who his manager will be next season remains unknown, with the club’s search for a new boss still ongoing.

Enzo Maresca, who guided the club to the Championship title in his only season in charge, left earlier this week to go to Chelsea.

Jannik Vestergaard has committed his future to Leicester

Less than a year ago Vestergaard was asked to train alone by then-boss Brendan Rodgers, but the Dane has turned his career around at Leicester.

The club have been in discussions over a new deal since mid-February for the 31-year-old, and despite his renaissance coming under the departed Maresca, Vestergaard has been rewarded with a new three-year contract.

Meanwhile, Marc Albrighton‘s 10-year Leicester career has come to an end after his contract was not renewed. Albrighton won the Premier League, FA Cup and Championship with the Foxes.

Kelechi Iheanacho and Denis Praet have also left the club after their contracts expired.

When does the summer transfer window open and close?

The 2024 summer transfer window in the Premier League officially opens on Friday June 14 – the same day that Euro 2024 starts.

The window will close on August 30 at 11pm UK time in England and at midnight in Scotland.

The Premier League has brought forward Deadline Day to link up with the other major leagues in Europe. The closing dates were set following discussions with the leagues in England, Germany, Italy, Spain and France.
