Davis Thompson qualifies for Open Championship after record-setting win at PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic | Golf News

Davis Thompson put in record-setting performance as he wrapped up victory at the John Deere Classic and secured a spot in the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Thompson’s final total of 28 under par in Illinois eclipsed the previous tournament record of 27 under set by Michael Kim in 2017 and earned him a first PGA Tour title as well as a debut appearance in the British major from July 18-21.

The 25-year-old carded a seven-under 64 on Sunday to finish four strokes clear of CT Pan, Michael Thorbjornsen and amateur Luke Clanton, with Pan securing the second Open qualification spot by virtue of having the higher world ranking.

Image:

Thompson led fellow American Eric Cole and England’s Aaron Rai by two strokes heading into the final round and never looked in danger of being caught as he birdied five of his first six holes at TPC Deere Run and reached the turn in 29.

The Georgian – who came joint-second at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic after a ninth-placed finish at the US Open in June – saw his lead trimmed to three shots after he bogeyed 12 with Thorbjornsen making six birdies on the trot between eight and 13.

However, Thompson birdied 14 to effectively clinch victory with Thorbjornsen bogeying the same hole before picking up a birdie at 18 to end up alongside Pan and Clanton at 24 under.

Thompson told CBS: “Qualifying for the Open was just an added incentive into this. The goal was to win the golf tournament after getting off to a great start and I was able to finish it off.”

Bizarrely, the winner of this tournament has stayed in the same rental house for three years running, with Thompson following in the footsteps of JT Poston in 2022 and last year’s winner Sepp Straka.

Clanton – who played the back nine in six under – became the first amateur to finish in the top 10 in back-to-back starts on the PGA Tour since 1958 having come 10th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

England’s Rai ended up tied for seventh at the John Deere Classic after a two-under 69, with compatriot Harry Hall a further stroke back in a tie for 12th after closing with a six-under 65 that featured eight birdies and a double bogey.

John Cena: WWE legend to retire from in-ring competition at end of 2025

John Cena will retire from in-ring competition with WWE at the end of 2025, bringing an end to a career that has included winning 16 world championships.

Cena appeared at WWE’s Money in the Bank event in Toronto on Saturday night to reveal that he would embark on a farewell tour next year.

The 47-year-old said he would wrestle at the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber in early 2025 and also at the two-night extravaganza WrestleMania 41, which will be held in Las Vegas on April 19 and 20.

Cena, who has competed in WWE on a part-time basis since 2018 with his acting career taking off, later said in a press conference that he would work between 30 and 40 dates up to December 2025.

He has headlined WrestleMania five times, including in 2012 and 2013 when he fought Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson on both occasions.

Cena last wrestled a singles match in November 2023 against Solo Sikoa although he teamed with The Miz and R-Truth in a six-man tag match against The Judgment Day in April of this year.

Speaking on his farewell tour, Cena said: “I approached the WWE with this idea and they kind of initiated the talks that this would be a great span of time if we were ever going to do it.”

He hopes to continue in a non-wrestling capacity with WWE.

Cena’s film credits include Trainwreck, The Suicide Squad, Fast & Furious 9 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

He has also hosted Saturday Night Live and is currently starring in Peacemaker on HBO.

PGA Tour: Davis Thompson two ahead of Aaron Rai going into John Deere Classic final round | Golf News

American Davis Thompson fired nine birdies in a third-round 62 to take a two-shot lead into the final day of the John Deere Classic.

Soft conditions on the TPC Deere Run in Illinois continued to bring low scores, Thompson moving to 21 under par – two clear of England’s Aaron Rai and fellow American Eric Cole.

“I guess it was just my day today,” said Thompson, who is seeking his first PGA Tour victory. “The guys behind me are playing really well.

“I know it’s going to be tough to finish off a golf tournament, but I’ve done it before. I just have to stay present-minded.”

With the final day being played in threesomes with a delayed start in a bid to beat storms, Rai, co-leader after the second round, will play in the last group for the second successive week.

He had six birdies in a round of 66 as he bids to go one better than his second place at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week.

Hayden Springer, who shot a 59 on the opening day, is a further two strokes back on 17 under par after a 66, alongside Taiwan’s CT Pan.

Rookie Michael Thorbjohnsen and amateur Luke Clanton are among those on 16 under par, while a third-round 70 saw England’s Harry Hall tumble down the leaderboard to seven shots adrift.

PGA Tour: England’s Aaron Rai shares halfway lead at John Deere Classic with Harry Hall one back | Golf News

England’s Aaron Rai shares the lead at the halfway stage of the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic with countryman Harry Hall just a shot further back.

Rai – who topped the leaderboard going into the final round of last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic before eventually finishing in a tie for second behind Cameron Davis – shot a bogey-free, eight-under 63 in Illinois on Friday to rise to 14 under for the event.

CT Pan matched Rai’s efforts on the day – the Taiwanese player’s blemish-free round featured a 100-foot chip for eagle at the 14th – and he is locked with the Englishman at the head of the field.

The pair are one stroke clear of Hall, who shot a five-under 66, and two better off than a group of six players on 12 under, including Hayden Springer and Sungjae Im.

Springer carded a 59 in his opening round but had to settle for an even-par 71 a day later as he missed a three-foot par putt and also carded a double-bogey late on at TPC Deere Run.

He said: “It wasn’t too bad. It was a little windier today, probably played a little tougher.

“I kind of hit some bumps on the back nine but more just mental errors and not making those short putts than anything else.”

Rai continues fine form

Rai, Hall and Springer are each looking to land their first PGA Tour titles, although Rai has won twice on the DP World Tour, including at the 2020 Scottish Open when he beat Tommy Fleetwood in a play-off.

Rai said: “I’ve been playing well tee-to-green for large parts of this season and that’s kind of continued over the last few weeks.

“A couple of weeks ago I spent quite a while on the green. My dad gave me a couple of tips.

“I’ve started working with John Graham as well, a putting coach who is based out here. Putting all that together has definitely translated onto the course.”

Two-time John Deere Classic champion Jordan Spieth notched two late birdies to make the cut with a four-under 67 but is eight shots adrift heading into the weekend at six under par.

The 2013 and 2015 winner said: “We had yesterday morning with no wind and a chance to really take advantage.

“I had 18 holes of a couple under yesterday, and unless you’re absolutely perfect from there, there is not much of a chance of winning.

“That doesn’t mean you don’t go out and try and shoot 10 under the next day.”

PGA Tour: Hayden Springer shoots historic 59 at John Deere Classic | Golf News

PGA Tour: Hayden Springer shoots historic 59 at John Deere Classic | Golf News

Hayden Springer has become the 14th player to record a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour after shooting a 12-under 59 in the first round of the John Deere Classic.

Springer carded eight birdies and two eagles, holing from just outside 12 feet on the final green for the last of his birdies to break the 60 barrier.

The 27-year-old American fired an eight under 27 on the front nine at TPC Deere Run, the lowest nine-hole score on Tour since 2000, then went quiet for several holes. He was nine under thru 16 holes when he holed out from the rough for eagle at the par-five 17th.

That put him one birdie away from the elusive 59. He found the centre of the 18th fairway, put his second shot about 12 feet from the pin and drained the putt.

His feat comes less than two weeks after Cam Young shot 59 at the Travelers Championship which was the first 59 since 2020. Jim Furyk holds the PGA Tour record with a 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship and he has also carded a 59, along with Scottie Scheffler, Kevin Chappell, Brandt Snedeker, Adam Hadwin, Justin Thomas, Stuart Appleby, Paul Goydos, David Duval, Chip Beck, and Al Geiberger.

“I am feeling good. I am kind of at a loss for words in terms of being able to do that,” said Springer after signing his card.

“It is one of those rare things in golf, so to have that opportunity and pull it off is pretty special.

Springer struggled to contain his emotion after shooting a historic 59 in round one at the John Deere Classic

“It is special to be able to do that. I played well last week but it has been a little bit tough to find anything and get stuff going and go low.

“It is special. It feels good to be standing here and to have had a good round of golf.

“I didn’t actually think I could make that shot [on 17] but I did and that kind of changed the momentum.”

Springer had missed seven of his last nine cuts but did finish 10th at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

He is ranked 236th in the world and has never won on the PGA Tour. He turned pro in 2019 but, after losing his card, he earned his way back on tour via Q-school last December.

Phil Foden: John Stones backs Man City and England team-mate to star at Euro 2024 | Football News

Phil Foden: John Stones backs Man City and England team-mate to star at Euro 2024 | Football News

John Stones has backed England and Manchester City team-mate Phil Foden to show the world how good he is at Euro 2024 and claims he could win player of the tournament in the process.

Foden heads to Germany after a fine season at the Etihad Stadium, scoring 19 goals and laying on eight assists as City won an unprecedented fourth straight Premier League title.

Such form saw the 24-year-old named Manchester City player of the year, Premier League player of the year and Football Writers’ Association footballer of the year.

Now he will be hoping to shine in England’s quest to land a first major men’s trophy in 58 years, starting with Sunday’s Group C opener against Serbia.

Asked if Foden could be player of the tournament at Euro 2024, Stones replied: “Yes. I’m biased, I think he’s absolutely incredible. First how he plays the game, so silky playing like he’s in the park.

Sky Sports News’ Rob Dorsett examines the three big dilemmas facing Gareth Southgate ahead of England’s opening match at Euro 2024 against Serbia

“I feel like he has brought so much to his game. Goals, maturity, knowing of situations, his pressing.

“This season has been incredible for him and I hope and I’m sure he will bring that to the tournament.”

‘Foden frustrated by last Euros’

Image:
Stones and Foden have shared plenty of success at Manchester City

With four goals in 34 caps, Foden has shown flashes of his talent in an England shirt but has so far been unable to replicate his consistent club form on the international stage – although Stones thinks that could soon change.

“Yes, 100 per cent,” he added when it was put to him that Foden should be on a level with world-class players such as Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe.

“I think it probably suits Phil that maybe that [spotlight] is not all on him. We all know the quality that he’s got, what he can bring and does for the team.

Phil Foden and John Stones
Image:
Stones and Foden will be hoping to recreate their club form at international level

“I think in these occasions, it’s where it brings it out of you and maybe it’s time to show the world what he can really do.

“Hopefully he stays fit and healthy for everyone, especially Phil, I know he was frustrated at the last Euros.

“He got an injury on his foot which kind of stopped him because he was playing incredible and training really well. That kind of stopped him.

“I feel Phil is someone who doesn’t feel anything on the outside, he just plays the game so freely. I hope he comes and does what Phil can do for us, which I know he wants to. He is very proud of being here and representing his country.”

Trippier: Foden’s ability is frightening

Meanwhile, Kieran Trippier singled “frightening” Foden out for praise when talking about the quality among Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad.

“Training’s gone really well, finally to get out here and prepare for the game against Serbia,” he said.

“We’ve worked, tactics, the training has been frightening, really – the style and everything about the quality – so we’re all happy, we’re all prepared and ready.

“To be honest with you, I can’t pick out individuals, because everybody’s been quality, but obviously Phil Foden is Phil Foden. He’s always one of my favourite players.

“With Phil, I could walk back into the camp and he’s got a ball at his feet. He’s obsessed with football.

“Everybody sees him on the pitch, but what people don’t see in training is his vision, his technique, and his ability is frightening.”

‘England haven’t got the best out of Foden’

Sky Sports News reporter Rob Dorsett:

“Foden has been absolutely outstanding this season.

“Just read his honours. At the age of 24, the Premier League’s player of the season has won six Premier League titles, he’s won the Champions League, two FA Cups, four League Cups, one Super Cup and the U17 World Cup with England.

“He’s been absolutely brilliant, but England haven’t got the best out of him, especially when he’s played at No 10. It’s as simple as that.

“I expect him to be starting on the wide left with Jude Bellingham starting at No 10.”

John Blain: Ex-Scotland player wants inquiry into Cricket Scotland & sportscotland after being ‘cleared’ of racism allegations | Cricket News

John Blain: Ex-Scotland player wants inquiry into Cricket Scotland & sportscotland after being ‘cleared’ of racism allegations | Cricket News

Former Scotland international John Blain has called for an inquiry into Cricket Scotland and sportscotland after being “cleared” of racism allegations.

Blain shared communication from Cricket Scotland chief executive Pete Fitzboydon that he received in January, which states that an independent investigation decided that “allegations have not been founded, and there is not any case to answer, and so this matter is now considered closed”.

The case arose following allegations by his former Scotland team-mates, Majid Haq and Qasim Sheikh, which emerged in the process of an independent review – with the ‘Changing the Boundaries’ report detailing 448 examples of institutional racism within the Scottish game.

Blain was asked to keep the outcome confidential while Cricket Scotland communicated with complainers but has now gone public after what his legal team described as “five months of delay and prevarication”.

The former Yorkshire bowler, who won 118 Scotland caps and was removed from Cricket Scotland’s Hall of Fame, said in a statement: “My life has been on hold for too long and it’s time that the truth is finally told about one of the biggest sporting scandals of recent times.

“Now that the investigation has cleared me, I am finally able to respond to those who falsely accused me. I simply could not believe that, after giving both Majid and Qasim considerable support during their careers, they made such false and disgraceful accusations against me.

“Crucially, the in-depth Scottish investigation did not accept Majid’s allegation that I had used the P-word during a tour to Kenya in 2007.”

Image:
Blain made 118 appearances for Scotland

A spokesperson for sportscotland said: “The Changing the Boundaries report was published following an in-depth review. The subsequent Referrals Process was run by an independent investigative team, comprising leading sports law firm Harper MacLeod LLP, Bishop Lloyd and Jackson Solicitors, and Sporting Equals.

“The process has involved examining the various allegations made, through investigation meetings with complainants, witnesses and those complained against. To date we have not commented on any individual’s cases and it would be inappropriate for us to do so.”

Cricket Scotland say they ‘engaged extensively with all parties’

Cricket Scotland said it had “engaged extensively with all parties throughout a complex, challenging and emotive independent investigative process”.

It added: “We will continue to respect that independent process, with the welfare of all involved as a priority, in order that we can reach a conclusion that enables our sport to move forward with unity.”

Haq and Sheikh’s solicitor, Aamer Anwar, said on behalf of the pair: “Both Majid and Qasim remain victims of racism who continue to be abused, vilified and excluded for daring to speak out. Sadly I suspect that will now increase.

“It was galling for my clients to see the huge camaraderie and support Mr Blain received in comparison to the abject silence from Scottish cricket, when Majid and Qasim placed their heads above the parapet.

Qasim Sheikh and Majid Haq call for action to be taken and recommendations to be implemented in Scottish Cricket after a review found that its governing body failed on almost all tests of institutional racism.
Image:
Qasim Sheikh (right) and Majid Haq (left) with solicitor Aamer Anwar (centre)

“My clients were subjected to all the various versions of racism that can be practised but are yet to see any real action in response.

“Cricket Scotland hoped this matter would simply go away. It will not, as they will see in the coming days.

“The one thing we can all agree with is the need for the facts to be made public now.

“My clients have engaged in good faith in a process that has taken too long and resulted in yet another case study for why Scottish cricket needs to accept institutional racism and put in place urgent changes to stop this happening again.

“The culture of denial remains rife and the dinosaurs are very much alive and well.”

Blain is now calling for the England and Wales Cricket Board to reconsider a separate case which saw him fined for using racist language after claiming “Majid’s false allegation was used as corroboration of Azeem Rafiq’s equally untrue allegation and was central to the ECB verdict against me, which must now be deemed unsafe”.

Image:
Blain was one of six former Yorkshire players and coaches who were handed fines and suspensions by The Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) for ‘alleged use of racist and/or discriminatory language’

He added: “The fact that the year-long Scottish investigation has completely exonerated me fatally undermines the ECB process and must force them to reconsider their unjust verdict and clear my name.”

The 45-year-old, who says the process cost him several jobs, including his role as BBC pundit, added: “It’s taken over three years to clear my name and I remain very angry and disappointed at the way Cricket Scotland, sportscotland and the ECB have so badly mishandled these allegations and the wider process.”

He added: “I have been the victim of a cynical and highly effective smear campaign, including successfully putting pressure on several of my employers to sack me. I have suffered serious online defamation and multiple social media attacks.

“My house requires regular police surveillance, my children have also been targeted and the health of close family members has suffered due to the prolonged period of intense stress.”

An ECB spokesperson said: “The Cricket Discipline Commission upheld the charge against John Blain for using racist language at Yorkshire in or around 2010 and 2011 after considering all the evidence before it, including Mr Blain’s defence and a number of supporting witness statements filed by him (through his then legal team) before he withdrew from the process. He declined the opportunity to appear before the Commission.”

Scotland’s final Euro 2024 squad: Craig Gordon, John Souttar out as Lewis Morgan, Tommy Conway included | Football News

Scotland’s final Euro 2024 squad: Craig Gordon, John Souttar out as Lewis Morgan, Tommy Conway included | Football News

Goalkeeper Craig Gordon and defender John Souttar have been left out of Scotland’s final squad for Euro 2024.

Head coach Steve Clarke had named four goalkeepers and seven centre-backs in his provisional 28-man squad – meaning the two players who he would drop would likely come from those areas.

Euro 2024: Scotland’s final squad

  • Goalkeepers: Zander Clark (Hearts), Angus Gunn (Norwich), Liam Kelly (Motherwell)
  • Defenders: Liam Cooper (Leeds United), Grant Hanley (Norwich), Jack Hendry (Al-Ettifaq), Ross McCrorie (Bristol City), Scott McKenna (Copenhagen), Ryan Porteous (Watford), Anthony Ralston (Celtic), Andy Robertson (Liverpool), Greg Taylor (Celtic), Kieran Tierney (Real Sociedad)
  • Midfielders: Stuart Armstrong (Southampton), Ryan Christie (Bournemouth), Billy Gilmour (Brighton), Ryan Jack (free agent), Kenny McLean (Norwich), John McGinn (Aston Villa), Callum McGregor (Celtic), Scott McTominay (Manchester United)
  • Forwards: Che Adams (Southampton), Tommy Conway (Bristol City), James Forrest (Celtic), Lewis Morgan (New York Red Bulls), Lawrence Shankland (Hearts)

While Gordon was the highest-capped player in the initial group – he had made just seven club appearances this season after recovering from a double-leg break suffered in December 2022. It means his Hearts team-mate Zander Clark and Motherwell’s Liam Kelly – who featured in every league game – will join No 1 Angus Gunn on the plane to Germany.

In defence – with Grant Hanley back after his injury issues and Liam Cooper fit despite his precautionary substitution against Gibraltar, Souttar misses out following his own fitness woes – with the defender missing Rangers’ last three games of the season.

The duo will be joined by Jack Hendry, Ryan Porteous, Scott McKenna, Andy Robertson, Greg Taylor and Kieran Tierney in the squad, plus Ross McCrorie and Anthony Ralston, who are Clarke’s right-back options.

The inclusion of Ralston and McCrorie come after first-choice Aaron Hickey and back-up Nathan Patterson were ruled out in the build-up, as was Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson.

Stuart Armstrong had not played for Southampton since April and the midfielder didn’t train with the Scotland squad this week – but Clarke has included him in his final 26 with the hope he rejoins the group on the opening week of the Euros.

Now free-agent Ryan Jack is also in – with his 17-minute substitute appearance against Gibraltar his first action since March, while Ryan Christie, Billy Gilmour, Kenny McLean, John McGinn, Callum McGregor and Scott McTominay make the cut as expected.

Forwards Lyndon Dykes – who had played in every qualifier – and uncapped Liverpool youngster Ben Doak withdrew from the wider squad through injury.

However, the duo have been replaced in the final group by Tommy Conway of Bristol City who scored 10 league goals during the campaign, and New York Red Bulls forward Lewis Morgan, who prior to Friday’s draw with Finland was last capped in 2018.

Image:
Lewis Morgan – who has scored nine goals in 16 games in the MLS this season – was a late addition to the squad

Che Adams and Lawrence Shankland are Clarke’s other forward options, while Celtic’s James Forrest will provide width after making the final squad.

Image:

Steve Clarke admitted it was difficult to tell Craig Gordon his decision:

“I like a balanced squad, I’ve picked a balanced squad. I wasn’t going to take four goalkeepers.

“It was a really tough decision to leave Craig out. When you think of the injury he’s come back from, I just felt over the period of time he’d been back, he hadn’t become the No 1 at Hearts again. Only seven games from December 2022 is a long time.

“The three goalkeepers had been involved in every qualification match. It was a really tough conversation with Craig, quite emotional to be honest for both of us. The mark of the man is that he’s here tonight.

“At the end of the conversation I said: ‘I understand if you don’t like me and don’t want to do this, but I would like to give you your 75th cap at Hampden in front of a good crowd’.

“He was there and within one hour of the news he was down having dinner with the lads and the meetings. A great professional.

“At the end of the game, we gave him a little reward signed by all the lads with Gordon 75 on the back of his jersey. As I was giving it to him I said, ‘I know Craig will throw this back in my face and say 76, 77, 78, 79 and 80 are coming’. That’s what Craig’s like.”

John Souttar will miss Scotland's Euro 2024 campaign
Image:
John Souttar will miss Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign

On John Souttar he added: “Also emotional. It’s really difficult for you people to imagine sitting down with people who have always given their best for their country when I’ve selected them.

“To get so close to the margin, the conversations were done face-to-face. Last time with Covid those types of conversations were done over the telephone.

“I’m pleased that I made the decision to bring a slightly bigger squad because we’ve had one or two issues. It means I get the chance to look the boys in the eye and so do they.

“I think they understand how difficult it is for me and I really understand how difficult it is for them. Very professional, both guys.”

‘We’re in a good place’

Clarke believes Scotland’s preparation can serve them well in Germany.

He said: “I’m delighted. The team’s in a good place. We know what we have within our group.

“The build-up games and the difficult friendlies, we picked them so the players understand how difficult it is against top teams and how good they’re going to have to be in this tournament.”

Scotland’s Euro 2024 schedule

Scotland have history kicking off tournaments, having been drawn to face Brazil in the opener at World Cup 1998, a game they narrowly lost 2-1 to a second-half Tom Boyd own goal.

This time around the venue is the Munich Football Arena (Allianz Arena) where Steve Clarke’s kick-off the opening match of Euro 2024 against hosts Germany on June 14.

The Scots also face games against perennial qualifiers Switzerland in Cologne on June 19, with Hungary – who reached the knockouts in 2016 – awaiting in Stuttgart on June 23.
