T20 World Cup: Afghanistan beat Bangladesh to reach semi-final and knock Australia out | Cricket News

Afghanistan reached a first ever World Cup semi-final courtesy of a dramatic eight-run victory over Bangladesh which in turn knocked Australia out of the T20 tournament.

Bangladesh came into the game with a chance to progress or send Australia through with a victory but – chasing a Duckworth-Lewis-Stern revised target of 114 in 19 overs as rain affected their innings – were bowled out for 105.

Captain Rashid Khan (4-23) and Naveen-ul-Haq (4-26) each took four wickets in the victory that secures Afghanistan a historic first World Cup semi-final against South Africa in Trinidad on Wednesday evening.

Highlights from the T20 World Cup Group 1 match as Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh to reach their first-ever semi-final where they’ll play South Africa.

Score summary – Afghanistan vs Bangladesh

Afghanistan 115-5 from 20 overs: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (43 off 55 balls), Rashid Khan (19no off 10); Rishad Hossain (3-26)

Bangladesh 105 all out from 17.5 overs: Litton Das (54no off 49); Rashid Khan (4-23), Naveen-ul-Haq (4-26)

Afghanistan’s hopes were earlier dented when restricted to a modest 115-5 batting first, Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scoring, but using up 55 deliveries to reach 43.

Rishad Hossain (3-26) ultimately dismissed the opener Afghanistan suffered a dramatic collapse from 84-1 to 93-5 in the space of 11 balls, before Rashid later blasted three sixes in his 10-ball 19.

During their tense T20 World Cup match, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan lost his cool and threw his bat at his partner Karim Janat following a miscommunication over a second run against Bangladesh

In the final over, the Afghanistan skipper was so desperate for late runs that he hurled his bat at his batting partner Karim Janat in fury when refused a second run.

Needing to chased down their target inside 12.1 overs in order to seal a semi-final spot themselves, Bangladesh came up well short in their rain-affected reply.

Litton Das struck an unbeaten 54 from 49, but wickets regularly tumbled at the other end, including two in two balls for Rashid in the 11th over that reduced the Tigers to 80-7.

Naveen then wrapped up the innings and the semi-final-clinching victory with his own double-strike with back-to-back deliveries in the penultimate over, prompting tearful celebrations from the Afghanistan players.

India, who beat Australia by 24 runs earlier on Monday in St Lucia to leave the qualification hopes of the 2021 champions hanging by a thread, will take on holders England in the second semi-final.

What’s next?

Afghanistan face South Africa in the first semi-final in Trinidad (Thursday, 1.30am UK and Ireland), with the Proteas having topped Group 2 of the Super 8s ahead of England.

India took top spot in Group 1 and in doing so set up a Thursday date with England in Guyana (3.30pm).

There is no reserve day available for the second semi-final between England and India – although an extra 250 minutes is available on the scheduled day – so if the game cannot be completed due to weather India will advance by virtue of topping their Super 8s pool.

England qualify for T20 World Cup Super 8s as Australia knock out Scotland after huge scare in St Lucia | Cricket News

England are through to the T20 World Cup Super 8s after Australia knocked out Scotland with a last-over win in St Lucia.

England defeated Namibia in a rain-affected match in Antigua on Saturday to stay in contention for a spot in the second round, but needed already-qualified Australia to see off Scotland on Sunday or their neighbours would progress instead.

Scotland posted 180-5 after profiting from six dropped catches by Australia, with Brandon McMullen smoking six sixes in a knock of 60 from 34 balls and skipper Richie Berrington making 42 not out off 31.

Australia were then 2-1 and 60-3 in the chase as David Warner (1), Mitchell Marsh (8) and Glenn Maxwell (11) fell cheaply but they eventually triumphed with two balls to spare as Tim David (24no off 14) hit Brad Wheal for six to clinch a five-wicket victory, having been dropped by Chris Sole with three runs required.

Travis Head (68 off 49) and Marcus Stoinis (59 off 29) thumped 80 from 44 deliveries for the fifth wicket, before falling in the 16th and 17 overs respectively – Head departing after nailing paceman Safyaan Sharif (2-42) for three sixes and Stonis ousted after successive fours off spin bowler Mark Watt (2-34).

Score summary – Australia vs Scotland

Scotland 180-5 from 20 overs: Brandon McMullen (60 off 34 balls), Richie Berrington (42no off 31), George Munsey (35 off 23); Glenn Maxwell (2-44), Adam Zampa (1-30)

Australia 186-5 from 19.4 overs: Travis Head (68 off 49), Marcus Stoinis (59 off 29), Tim David (24no off 14); Mark Watt (2-34), Safyaan Sharif (2-42)

Australia were left needing 26 runs from the last three overs and David promptly crunched Wheal for two fours in the 18th before tonking the same bowler over the ropes at deep midwicket towards the end of the 20th to break Scotland’s hearts and keep defending champions England in the competition.

Scotland – who will host Australia for a three-match T20 international series in Edinburgh in September – will be gutted by their exit but should be proud of how they played throughout.

Berrington’s men racked up 90-0 from 10 overs against England before that game was abandoned, while they then recorded comfortable victories over Namibia and Oman before registering the highest T20I total against Australia by an associate team.

England join co-hosts West Indies and USA plus South Africa in Group 2 of the Super 8s, with Australia to compete in Group 1 alongside India, Afghanistan and one of Bangladesh or Netherlands.

Bangladesh will claim that place if they beat Nepal in their final first-round match in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday but a defeat would keep Netherlands in the mix, although the Dutch would need to beat Sri Lanka in St Lucia on the same day and overhaul a big net run-rate deficit to advance from Group D.

Scotland’s T20 World Cup destiny in own hands with any upset win against Australia certain to knock out England | Cricket News

Scotland’s T20 World Cup destiny in own hands with any upset win against Australia certain to knock out England | Cricket News

Net run-rate has become an oft-used term over recent days as sides battle to qualify for the Super 8s at the T20 World Cup – but Scotland can render that irrelevant with one more win.

Should Richie Berrington’s team beat the mighty Australia in St Lucia on Sunday (1.30am UK and Ireland), they will qualify for the second round, even if England have dispatched Namibia hours earlier. A washout in either match will also see them through.

Scotland’s destiny is in their own hands but their task is a stiff one to carry off.

Scotland will qualify for the Super 8s if they beat Australia

Australia have not lost to a non-Test playing country in any form of World Cup cricket since being beaten by Zimbabwe in 1983, while they are three from three in this year’s showpiece after battling past Oman, easing past England and then thumping Namibia.

Scotland, who raced to 90-0 from 10 overs against England before their opening fixture was abandoned and then saw off Namibia and Oman, could be aided by Australia resting players ahead of the Super 8s, but Michael Jones wants a “full-strength” opponent.

‘These are the opportunities Scotland crave’

“At the end of the day our team wants the best result we can get, but on a personal level you want to challenge yourself against the best,” said Jones, who struck an unbeaten 45 from 30 balls against England in Barbados, including a six off Chris Jordan that smashed a solar panel.

“To have the opportunity to bat against Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, then Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, that’s the best in the world.

“Those are the opportunities we crave as Scotland teams. You want to challenge yourself and see how far you go against those guys. I almost hope they go full strength and we can show the cricket world we’re up to the challenge.”

Talk of Australia manipulating the result to knock England out – something Cummins says would never happen despite team-mate Hazlewood’s jokey references about it earlier this week – has quietened since England overhauled Scotland’s net run-rate by annihilating Oman.

Sky Sports Cricket’s Ian Ward believes Josh Hazlewood’s suggestion that it would be in Australia’s ‘best interest’ for England to go out of the tournament at the group stage was ‘tongue in cheek’

Jones, speaking before England vs Oman, always felt Australia would play to their maximum, adding: “They are renowned for being extremely diligent and professional. I’m absolutely certain they will come out all guns blazing like they do for every game at every tournament.”

Scotland have certainly not taken a backward step.

Jones and George Munsey’s onslaught against England was followed by Berrington and Chris Leask playing the innings of note against Namibia and Munsey and Brandon McMullen then firing versus Oman – McMullen biffing 61 from 31 balls, with 11 boundaries.

Berrington’s side will need some more big performances against Australia if England do the job on Namibia, as expected, but the fact Scotland head into the final match with qualification still achievable is testament to their development. Time for one final push.

What’s next?

England play Namibia in Antigua from 6pm on Saturday (UK and Ireland time), with Scotland’s game against Australia in St Lucia starting at 1.30am on Sunday as Group B concludes.

Scotland have also announced they will host Australia for three T20sin Edinburgh on September 4, 6 and 7, with Berrington saying: “It’s fantastic to have this home series to look forward later in the summer, which should be a treat for all our supporters.

“Our players always relish the opportunity to test themselves against the best sides and we’ve shown good form in this World Cup so far, so I’m sure it’ll be an exciting and competitive series.”
