Joshua Zirkzee: Manchester United reach broad agreement with Bologna striker amid increased optimism over deal | Transfer Centre News

There is increased optimism from all parties that a deal can be finalised for Joshua Zirkzee’s move from Bologna to Manchester United.

Extensive talks have taken place with Zirkzee’s representatives and there is a broad agreement on terms with the player.

As was reported by Sky Sports, United have made it clear they will meet the 23-year-old’s £34m release clause.

Discussions are ongoing internally over whether United will pay the clause in full or negotiate a structure with Bologna.

Zirkzee is with the Netherlands squad at Euro 2024 and made his first appearance of the tournament in Saturday night’s quarter-final win over Turkey, coming on as a late substitute.

Arsenal and AC Milan are also interested in Zirkzee, who has two years left on his contract with Bologna.

Juventus are another club keen on Zirkzee but are currently working on other targets, and they would need to sell a striker to bring one in.

Why is Zirkzee in demand?

Zirkzee is also on Arsenal’s radar

Zirkzee graduated through Bayern Munich’s system and had spells with Parma and Anderlecht before joining Bologna in the summer of 2022.

The forward received limited game time in his first campaign in Serie A, scoring only two league goals from 808 minutes.

Last season he scored 11 league goals and the shot map below suggests he is most lethal from the left-of-centre region.

The heat map below also shows how the forward typically plays deeper than a conventional striker.

He also ranks among the top five players in Serie A for creating big chances, attempting dribbles and regaining possession in the final third.

Indeed, the radar graphic below reveals he ranks among the top five per cent across Europe in those three metrics.

Dan Ashworth: Manchester United agree deal to hire Newcastle sporting director | Football News

Manchester United have reached a deal with Newcastle to hire their sporting director Dan Ashworth.

The 53-year-old will commence his new role at Old Trafford with immediate effect.

Newcastle initially were demanding £20m compensation for the former FA Technical Director, with Man Utd looking to pay a fraction of that, but a compromise has been reached in the last few days.

The deal also helped Newcastle comply with Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) this month. Ashworth has been on gardening leave at Newcastle since February.

The hiring of Ashworth is the latest hierarchical hire done by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the new INEOS minority investors since they took over the club.

Image:

Omar Berrada joined from Manchester City as United’s new chief executive, while Jason Wilcox arrived as new academy director from Southampton.

Why did Man Utd go for Dan Ashworth?

Sky Sports News senior reporter Melissa Reddy:

“It’s unsurprising that Man Utd have chosen him to take over at as sporting director under INEOS who are looking to reshape their football operations at the club.

“Ashworth’s pedigree and esteem are well-known in the game. He is widely regarded as one of the best operators in Europe and actually the best in England given his body of work.

“You stretch back to his time at West Brom. There he delivered two promotions and a top-half Premier League finish. His work was so promising that he got poached by the England FA.

“There for the national team, he introduced an element that is seen as one of the key factors of their continued success, even now, and that’s the England DNA. A defined way of playing across all age groups.

“We saw the impact of that at the 2018 World Cup and after that tournament, Ashworth left the FA and was poached by Brighton, who wanted him to be in charge of remodelling them and securing their status as a Premier League club.

Dan Ashworth has overseen recruitment teams at Brighton and Newcastle

“He did more than that – he helped them become one of the best-run clubs in the world. Their recruitment model is the envy of clubs the world over.

“That attracted the PIF-powered Newcastle. Even though they have spent a lot, they have spent quite smartly under his watch and he has modernised a lot of their operations.”

Netball Super League: ‘Huge rivals’ Manchester Thunder and Loughborough Lightning set for Netball Super League final | Netball News

Defending champions Loughborough Lightning and four-time winners Manchester Thunder meet in Saturday’s Netball Super League, with former Former England international Tamsin Greenway looking ahead to a ‘incredible’ matchup in front of a record 8,000 sell-out crowd in Birmingham.

Watch the final – and the third-place playoff between Severn Stars and London Pulse – for free live on skysports.com and Sky Sports App

What can we expect from the final?

It’s a huge match, a massive one for these two teams who have become huge rivals over the last few years.

It’s going to be a really big one. They’ve both won one and lost one to each other this season and it’s kind of the final everyone was expecting.

Image:
Loughborough Lightning are the defending Netball Super League champions

Manchester Thunder go in as favourites.

This was the same matchup last year in the semi-final where they lost out. They’ve recruited well since, they’ve got the best attacking record in the league, the best defensive record and only lost one game all season.

However, that one game they lost this year was against Loughborough Lightning… although you have to go back to March to find that.

A history of Netball Super League champions have been crowned…who will win and be crowned Grand Final champions 2024?

Lightning are reigning champions. They’re consistently good and they always arrive at the big occasions.

They had the the tougher semi-final to come through. They they played London Pulse, who everyone kind of thought would sneak in – they’ve got a young, exciting group and they’d lost them twice in the rounds but Lightning got over the line when it mattered.

It’s going to be a really intriguing 60 minutes battle.

Who are the ones to watch?

What has been great is to see is the growth of some of the players across this year. The two teams are littered with international stars.

You look at the form of Beth Cobden, the Loughborough Lightning wing defence and the form of current England international Imogen Allison for Manchester, they were both named Player of the Match in their semi-finals.

Highlights of the Super League semi-final between Manchester Thunder and Severn Stars

They are crucial to how these teams get about and they’re up against the two best wing attacks in the league this year.

You’ve also got the experience of Nat Metcalf, the current England Roses wing attack for Manchester Thunder.

I think it comes down to who gets on top of each other out of those players.

Stars or Pulse from third-place playoff?

This is a really strange one because London Pulse were absolutely gutted about not making the final last week.

They went in to that semi-final with two wins over Loughborough, thought they get over the line again but they didn’t and were devastated. They’re a really young group, but full of of England players and superstars.

Highlights of the Super League final between Loughborough Lightning against London Pulse

For Severn Stars this is their first ever Finals appearance, so it’s slightly different. They lost but their loss to Manchester Thunder was kind of expected.

I’ve seen this happen before where they get up for the big occasion and want to get that third spot.

Pulse have got to put all of that aside and go for it. On paper, London Pulse should come out on top, but I wouldn’t write off Severn Stars.

Record 8,000 capacity crowd expected

It’s absolutely incredible. The last few years, the uptake in attendances for the big games has been huge.

We’re moving forward into the professional era, going into the big arenas, and this is just another statement as to why that needed to happen.

Eight thousand people in the Resorts Arena at Birmingham, the atmosphere is going to be incredible.

It’s going to be an amazing event… to have that atmosphere and play in front of that crowd just shows where the sport is heading.”

Mary Earps will leave Manchester United Women at the end of her contract to join Paris Saint-Germain.

Earps has spent the last five years with United but her current deal has been winding down as the summer approached.

United have been in talks with England’s No1 for two years but have been unable to reach an agreement with the stopper on a new deal.

Earps helped United to win the Women’s FA Cup last season although the club had a disappointing Women’s Super League campaign, finishing fifth.

United turned down a world-record offer for a goalkeeper in women’s football when Arsenal came in for Earps last year.

Earps is the third big name to leave United on a free transfer over the last 12 months after Alessia Russo and Ona Batlle both departed last season.

PSG had initially been interested in signing the 31-year-old England goalkeeper during the January window.

Manchester United are interested in Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte, with the Uruguay international one of a number of players they are looking at.

Man Utd want to sign a new central midfielder this summer.

Ugarte, who is part of Uruguay’s Copa America squad, made 34 appearances in all competitions for PSG last season.

The 23-year-old joined the French champions from Sporting Lisbon for a reported £51.1m last summer, with his contract at the Parc des Princes running until June 2028.

Man Utd’s other main priorities this summer are a new striker and central defender.

Man Utd continue Zirkzee talks

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee has been linked with a move to Old Trafford – here’s a look at why he’s attracting interest

United remain in talks with the representatives of Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, with the club prepared to pay his €40m (£33.8m) release clause.

Discussions are ongoing over a move for the Netherlands striker, who is currently at Euro 2024 in Germany.

It will then be up to the 23-year-old and his representatives to decide if they want to speak to United over a potential move.

United have other targets if a move for Zirkzee doesn’t materialise.

Arsenal are also said to be interested in the ex-Bayern Munich forward, while AC Milan were close to agreeing a deal earlier this summer, which means United could face competition for Zirkzee.

Man Utd remain interested in Branthwaite

Dharmesh Sheth says although Jarrad Branthwaite is a top target for Manchester United, INEOS will walk away from a deal if Everton don’t bring down their asking price

United are also still interested in Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite but have yet to follow up their initial offer, which was rejected.

The England defender remains a primary target – but as yet, there is no indication from Everton that their £70m asking price will be reduced.

United will not go back in for Branthwaite unless they receive assurances that Everton are willing to budge on the transfer fee.

Everton rejected United’s initial offer thought to be worth £35m plus add-ons, and United are reluctant to be drawn into a long-running saga.

Man Utd interested in Lille duo

Leny Yoro

Erik ten Hag’s side have also made initial contact with Lille over the signing of central defender Leny Yoro.

The 18-year-old is among a number of young centre-backs United are looking at.

Centre-back is thought to be a priority position, with Raphael Varane leaving as a free agent at the end of the month. Victor Lindelof is also attracting interest from Turkish club Fenerbahce.

Man Utd are also among the Premier League clubs interested in Yoro’s Lille team-mate Jonathan David, who is in the final year of his contract.

Chelsea and West Ham are also understood to be interested in the Canadian forward but as yet there has been no club-to-club contact.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe: Manchester United co-owner believes over-regulation could ‘ruin’ Premier League | Football News

Sir Jim Ratcliffe: Manchester United co-owner believes over-regulation could ‘ruin’ Premier League | Football News

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe understands why rivals Manchester City are challenging Premier League financial rules and warned the competition faces “ruin” if regulation goes too far.

City are suing the league over its associated party transaction (APT) rules, which are designed to ensure commercial deals linked to a club’s ownership are done for fair market value.

Ratcliffe sympathised with City, and told Bloomberg: “I can understand why they are challenging it. You can understand why they would say that they want an open market, (a) free market.”

Ratcliffe said the Premier League needed to be “careful” not to end up in “an endless legal wrangle with lots of clubs”.

Speaking on June 1, Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak believes the recent restrictions on buying players will see fewer transfers and loan deals this summer

Everton and Nottingham Forest were docked a combined 12 points for breaching the league’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) last season, while City face a hearing in the autumn charged with 115 breaches of Premier League rules.

Ratcliffe said: “The Premier League is probably the most successful sporting league in the world, certainly the most successful football league in the world. And we have this expression in northern England: ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’

“If you start interfering too much, bringing too much regulation in, then you finish up with the Manchester City issue, you finish up with the Everton issue, you finish up with the Nottingham Forest issue – on and on and on.

“If you’re not careful the Premier League is going to finish up spending more time in court than it is thinking about what’s good for the league. We have got the best league in the world, don’t ruin that league for heaven’s sake.”

Kaveh Solhekol explains why Manchester City are launching legal action against the Premier League and the possible ramifications

United voted in favour of strengthening the APT rules in February which City are now challenging, but joined the Blues in voting against a proposal called ‘anchoring’ which would put a cap on the amount clubs can spend on wages, transfer and agents’ fees.

“(Anchoring) would inhibit the top clubs in the Premier League,” INEOS co-founder Ratcliffe said.

“And the last thing you want is for the top clubs in the Premier League not to be able to compete with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG – that’s absurd.

“And if it does, it then ceases to be the finest league in the world.”

Ratcliffe said there had been a “drift into complexity” in the Premier League towards over-regulation since the departure of Richard Scudamore. Anchoring is set to be trialled on a shadow basis in the Premier League next season.

Ratcliffe also said an independent football regulator “won’t be good” for the game.

The Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats all remain committed to a regulator in their General Election manifestos.

Dharmesh Sheth reveals Manchester United are discussing internally whether to go back in for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite after their opening bid was rejected

Ratcliffe also revealed he intends to put French side Nice, majority-owned by INEOS, in a blind trust for the coming season in order to comply with UEFA multi-club ownership rules and allow United and Nice to compete side by side in the Europa League.

UEFA revealed last month this would be an option for next season only, beyond that and shares would have to be sold in order to comply.

Ratcliffe said it was “not (INEOS’) intention” to sell Nice, and spoke about how he saw the Cote d’Azur club being able to develop players for United and also utilise their position within the European Union to sign promising U18 footballers, something United are unable to do.

Ratcliffe, who backed Britain’s exit from the EU in 2016, added: “Because of Brexit it’s quite difficult now to contract the younger generational talents in Europe, but Nice could do that.

“If it’s a fantastic 15-year-old in France we can sign him up to Nice and use Nice as a conduit to Manchester United later on.”

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee has been linked with a move to Old Trafford and he made a bright start for Bayern Munich when he began his career with the German giants

Ratcliffe said United had “made lots of poor decisions” over the last decade, and that a marquee signing like France star Kylian Mbappe is not the answer to the problems facing the Red Devils right now.

“Everywhere we look there’s room for improvement, and we will improve everything because we want to be competing for the Premier League every year,” he added.

“And I don’t think the solution is to buy an Mbappe.

“One player isn’t going to solve the problem, you need to build a balanced squad and we need to make progress with the squad and ultimately you top it off with one or two players like Mbappe, but that’s not the solution today.”

The 2024 summer transfer window in the Premier League and Scottish Premiership is officially open.

The window will close on August 30 at 11pm UK time in England and at 11.30pm in Scotland.

The Premier League and Scottish Premiership brought forward Deadline Day to link up with the other major leagues in Europe. The closing dates were set following discussions with the leagues in England, Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

Jarrad Branthwaite to Manchester United: Why Erik ten Hag could make an exception for Everton defender | Football News

Jarrad Branthwaite to Manchester United: Why Erik ten Hag could make an exception for Everton defender | Football News

Manchester United have Jarrad Brantwhaite top of their centre-back list. His prioritisation becomes perplexing when you consider that Lisandro Martinez, their best centre-back, is also left-footed.

Left-footed centre-back pairings are scarce in elite football. Conventional wisdom dictates that it just doesn’t work, even though, up until recently, there has been no such issue with two right-footed centre-backs.

Everton’s Brantwhaite is ahead of Marc Guehi, Jean-Clair Todibo and Leny Yoro in United’s thinking. They are all right-footed, as is Raphael Varane, departing as a free agent at the end of the month.

Sky Sports News’ Dharmesh Sheth has the latest of Man Utd’s Branthwaite pursuit

In searching for Varane’s successor, United appear to be challenging that thinking. Few others have tried.

Aymeric Laporte’s France career never happened because Didier Deschamps refused. Intriguingly, after Laporte switched allegiances to Spain he played with Pau Torres, also left-footed, in three games at Euro 2020.

Although, the former Man City defender was dropped for the semi-final, having looked awkward in possession on his adopted side. There was a similar outcome in rare outings with Nathan Ake at City, too. Hardly encouraging.

Reece Pinnock and Ben Mee at Brentford are another rare example.

Image:
Everton knocked back Man Utd’s opening bid

On the surface, the Branthwaite pursuit is puzzling. More so when considering Erik ten Hag’s reluctance to use a right-footed centre-back as Martinez’s understudy, preferring left-back Luke Shaw.

Explaining his thinking in 2023, Ten Hag said: “Because the left-footed are better orientated on the left side, in possession you then have better angles.”

For much of the season, Ten Hag refused to play Varane next to Harry Maguire because he felt the team’s fluidity was negatively impacted with one of them at left centre-back.

Requiring a left-footed centre-back is a relatively new phenomenon in the Premier League. Not all managers buy into it, but Ten Hag sees it as a priority. Martinez is only 26 and clearly favoured in left centre-back. So why would Ten Hag make an exception here?

For Everton, the 21-year-old has played all his games in the Premier League this season on the left side of defence. However, when you look further back in his career, Branthwaite has experience on the other side.

In a loan spell at Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in 2022/23, Branthwaite played 44 per cent of his game-time as a right centre-back under United legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy. He also filled in at right-back for a bit.

This is because, despite being predominantly left-footed, Branthwaite can play off his right foot, too. Van Nistelrooy goes a step further. “He is good on the ball, can play on the left or the right of centre-back because he is two-footed.”

Video game EA FC 24 has given him a five-star weak foot. For context, Victor Lindelof, the right-footed centre-back Ten Hag prefers as left centre-back when pushed, has a four-star weak foot.

Jarrad Branthwaite
Image:
Jarrad Branthwaite has impressed for Everton this season

Branthwaite is so two-footed, it seems, that his former academy coach at Carlisle insists we’ve all got it wrong about which foot comes naturally to the defender. “Jarrad is not left-footed!” Eric Kinder told the Liverpool Echo earlier this year. “He’s right-footed, but both feet are exactly the same.”

He added: “It made me laugh when Jamie Carragher said young left-footed centre-backs are hard to find. I laughed.

“When people would ask me if Jarrad Branthwaite had a chance, I would say: ‘He’s six-foot four, he can head the ball and he kicks with both feet. What can go wrong?’.”

Kinder’s prediction was nearly spot on. Branthwaite’s ability as a left-footer to play on the right makes him a unique proposition in the transfer market. Thus United’s hurry to sign him.

Martinez and Shaw’s bad luck with injury over the past season has left United without any left-footers in the heart of defence. The addition of Branthwaite would give them a partner for Martinez and a suitable understudy if his problems persist.

The lack of recent experience on the right side of defence does raise question marks, however. The other qualities that Branthwaite brings have clearly encouraged United to take this calculated risk.

Like Martinez, one of the success stories of Ten Hag’s transfer dealings, Branthwaite is comfortable passing out at the back, a quality that’s been missing for United this season in the Argentine’s absence.

Branthwaite is also quicker than the rest of United’s central defenders, his large stride giving him an advantage in foot races with opposition attackers. The 6ft 5in defender’s recovery speed makes him perfectly suited to a high back line.

We saw the way William Saliba allowed Arsenal to transform their defensive shape for similar reasons when he came into the first team.

Branthwaite also brings a lot of the same traits as Varane, the man he would replace in the back four at Old Trafford.

In tackles, interceptions, duels won and aerial duels won per 90, Branthwaite comes out on top. His strengths in these are well suited to the transitional style of play Ten Hag has tried to implement.

Often, United’s defenders struggle to keep up with that intensity, which is why we’ve seen that gaping hole in midfield due to the team simultaneously playing a low block and a high line.

Varane outperforms Branthwaite in percentage of aerial duels won and percentage of duels won, but in the latter metric both are in the top 10 in the Premier League, along with Harry Maguire.

Ten Hag likes to put his defenders one vs one often, so coming out on top of those duels is vital. If you’re beaten, the rest of the team can quickly become exposed, partly explaining the ease with which teams have played through United this season.

United are considering going back in for Branthwaite after seeing a £35m bid rejected by Everton, who value the defender at £70m. It is understood United will move on if Everton do not bring down their asking price.

If they can come to an agreement, United could form one of the few elite left-footed centre-back pairings.
