Joshua Zirkzee: Manchester United reach broad agreement with Bologna striker amid increased optimism over deal | Transfer Centre News

There is increased optimism from all parties that a deal can be finalised for Joshua Zirkzee’s move from Bologna to Manchester United.

Extensive talks have taken place with Zirkzee’s representatives and there is a broad agreement on terms with the player.

As was reported by Sky Sports, United have made it clear they will meet the 23-year-old’s £34m release clause.

Discussions are ongoing internally over whether United will pay the clause in full or negotiate a structure with Bologna.

Zirkzee is with the Netherlands squad at Euro 2024 and made his first appearance of the tournament in Saturday night’s quarter-final win over Turkey, coming on as a late substitute.

Arsenal and AC Milan are also interested in Zirkzee, who has two years left on his contract with Bologna.

Juventus are another club keen on Zirkzee but are currently working on other targets, and they would need to sell a striker to bring one in.

Why is Zirkzee in demand?

Zirkzee is also on Arsenal’s radar

Zirkzee graduated through Bayern Munich’s system and had spells with Parma and Anderlecht before joining Bologna in the summer of 2022.

The forward received limited game time in his first campaign in Serie A, scoring only two league goals from 808 minutes.

Last season he scored 11 league goals and the shot map below suggests he is most lethal from the left-of-centre region.

The heat map below also shows how the forward typically plays deeper than a conventional striker.

He also ranks among the top five players in Serie A for creating big chances, attempting dribbles and regaining possession in the final third.

Indeed, the radar graphic below reveals he ranks among the top five per cent across Europe in those three metrics.

When does the summer transfer window close?

The 2024 summer transfer window in the Premier League will close on August 30 at 11pm UK time in England and at midnight in Scotland.

The Premier League has brought forward Deadline Day to link up with the other major leagues in Europe. The closing dates were set following discussions with the leagues in England, Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois: Winner to face Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk victor, Frank Warren says | Boxing News

Promoter Frank Warren has told Sky Sports the winner of Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois will face the winner of December’s rematch between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.

Joshua will face Dubois in an all-British heavyweight clash for the IBF world heavyweight title at Wembley on September 21, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Usyk announced on Tuesday that he had vacated the IBF belt, which means Joshua can regain one of the world titles he previously held if he defeats Dubois, who has been upgraded from IBF interim title holder to IBF champion.

Joshua has marched back up the heavyweight ranks after suffering two consecutive losses to Usyk, who went on to become the undisputed world champion with his stunning victory over Fury last month.

Dubois, who previously held a version of the WBA title, has also rebuilt successfully from a loss to Usyk.

“All roads will lead to unification again,” Warren, promoter for Dubois, told Sky Sports on Thursday.

Turki Al-Alalshikh brought Joshua and Tyson Fury together to discuss a potential long awaited fight

“He’s [Usyk] getting a massive payday for the rematch that he was contracted for against Tyson. That’s what the position is. It’s pure business as far as he’s concerned.

“If it was about holding on to the belts, then he wouldn’t have relinquished. He’s in it for the money and obviously the rematch is a massive, massive fight, which everyone wants to see. It was such a closely fight last time, it’s a bigger fight now in December.

“Whatever happens, the winner of this fight on September 21 [Joshua vs Dubois], which will be Daniel [Dubois], will fight the winner of that fight, and the four belts will be back on the line again.”

Dubois, speaking at Wednesday’s press conference…

“I’m just aiming to be the best. To fight the best and beat the best. AJ has been the king for a long time, and we all know it, so on the night I need to become a king-slayer.

“That’s my goal and that’s the mission at hand. I’m just ready to go.

“I’m definitely learning more about myself with every fight, as a fighter and as a person. Coming out of the darkness, going into the light and being a man of the future.

“I’ve improved all round as a fighter and an athlete. I’m really up for this and ready to go.

I’m ready to let my fists do the talking. I’m 100m per cent ready. I’m going to go to camp, focus and train like a beast. Bring it on.”

Dubois is confident he’ll have the beating of Joshua when they fight at Wembley in September, while AJ is just focused on making sure he’s in peak physical condition to perform on the night

Anthony Joshua will face Daniel Dubois in an all-British heavyweight clash for the IBF world heavyweight title at Wembley Stadium on September 21, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Oleksandr Usyk announced on Tuesday that he had vacated the IBF belt, which means Joshua can regain one of the world titles he previously held if he defeats Dubois, who has been upgraded from IBF interim title holder to the IBF champion.

Joshua has marched back up the heavyweight ranks after suffering two consecutive losses to Usyk, who went on to become the undisputed world champion with his stunning victory over Tyson Fury last month.

The 34-year-old Joshua was outpointed by Usyk in two fights that spanned 2021 and 2022.

Anthony Joshua was at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, just a day after knocking out Francis Ngannou!

He returned with a points win over Jermaine Franklin in 2023, but then followed up with stoppage victories over Robert Helenius and Otto Wallin later that year.

He’s boxed once this year already, taking out Francis Ngannou in just two rounds. Ngannou, a former UFC champion in MMA, was an inexperienced boxer, but he had managed to go the 10-round distance with Tyson Fury in his first professional boxing bout.

See what Anthony Joshua said to Francis Ngannou in the ring after their fight.

Dubois, who previously held a version of the WBA title, has also rebuilt successfully from a loss to Usyk.

The 26-year-old challenged Usyk for the WBO, WBA and IBF titles at the Wroclaw Stadium in Poland last August. Dubois put in a game effort, pressing the Ukrainian initially. Usyk had to rise from a low blow, a ruling which Dubois and his team still dispute, to halt Dubois in the ninth round.

Dubois though went on to grind down Jarrell Miller in December and at the start of this month pounded Filip Hrgovic to a halt to win the IBF Interim strap.

Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois “had to be pulled apart” hours before their press conference for a world title fight at Wembley on September 21, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Joshua will face Dubois in an all-British heavyweight clash for the IBF world heavyweight title at Wembley, and the two had to be separated after tensions became high following a face-to-face sit-down interview, according to Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn.

Oleksandr Usyk announced on Tuesday that he had vacated the IBF belt, which means Joshua can regain one of the world titles he previously held if he defeats Dubois, who has been upgraded from IBF interim title holder to the IBF champion.

Eddie Hearn told Sky Sports: “Even the face-off was quite tame earlier, and something was said – ‘We can do it now if you want’ from Dubois – and the next thing AJ is up and they had to be separated and pulled apart.”

“It was quite spicy. Three hours later, they get up there and probably don’t want to say too much, but it’s a great fight.

“My job is to look past Dubois. AJ is not thinking of anyone else. I’ve always believed he’ll become undisputed, I’m so confident he beats every heavyweight in the world.”

Anthony Joshua expected to fight Daniel Dubois for world title as Oleksandr Usyk vacates IBF belt | Boxing News

Anthony Joshua is expected to fight Daniel Dubois for the IBF heavyweight belt after Oleksandr Usyk confirmed he was vacating the world title.

Usyk defeated Tyson Fury on points to become undisputed champion with the WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF titles, but has now announced he will relinquish his IBF belt ahead of a planned fight between Joshua and Dubois at Wembley Stadium on September 21.

The Ukrainian confirmed the news via his Instagram account.

“Hey Anthony Joshua, Daniel Dubois, the IBF Belt is my present for you for 21.09.2024. The world loves strong. Your friend, Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World, Oleksandr Usyk,” he posted.

Dubois, who Usyk defeated last year, holds an IBF Interim belt and would have been the mandatory challenger for Usyk, who is contracted to rematch Fury, a bout which has been set for December of this year.

Joshua, formerly a unified world champion himself, has previously lost twice to Usyk.

The Briton though went on to grind down Jarrell Miller in December and at the start of this month pounded Filip Hrgovic to a halt to win the IBF Interim strap.

“[Being world champion] is a dream. From challenging for the world title to getting the chance to win [it] outright, that’s what I want,” Dubois declared after that fight.

“I’ll demolish Joshua. I’ll get even better from here.”

Joshua was in attendance at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, just a day after knocking out Francis Ngannou!

As he looks to reclaim his former position in the division, Joshua said: “I’ve got to pick them off one by one.

“It’s not going to be easy, but that’s my mentality. So come one, come all.

“He [Dubois] has been in tougher fights 1719362248, so he becomes hardened. He has worked his way up the ladder, we’ll see what happens.

“I’ll turn up and do my job.”

Joshua Zirkzee transfer target: Man Utd and AC Milan want Bologna forward but what makes him so good? | Football News

Joshua Zirkzee transfer target: Man Utd and AC Milan want Bologna forward but what makes him so good? | Football News

Joshua Zirkzee is different. At 6’4”, he looks like a target man but he has the feet of a playmaker and the pace to run the channels. Manchester United are one of a number of clubs wondering whether this unique skill set is just what they need.

At 23, Zirkzee has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Bologna, helping the Italian club to qualify for Europe’s elite competition for the first time in 60 years. He has been rewarded with a late call-up to Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad for Euro 2024.

The numbers are impressive. Zirkzee ranked among the top 10 players in Serie A this past season for goals from open play, chances created from open play and successful dribbles. It is just a hint at the all-around threat that he poses to opposition defences.

Image:
Zirkzee showed himself to be a scorer and creator of goals in Serie A

But this is about more than those numbers, this is about potential too, and a player whose profile is difficult to replicate in the market. He has taken a big step forward recently but he has long been identified as someone capable of things others are not.

Zirkzee moved to Bayern Munich aged just 16, scoring in a friendly fixture against Paris Saint-Germain at 17. He scored four Bundesliga goals but found it challenging to force his way in as a teenager. It was a step up for him physically but also psychologically.

“He went at a very young age and that can sometimes be a problem for players,” Willem Weijs tells Sky Sports. “They believe that it is only about skills and scoring goals and playing nice football but professional football demands other things of players.”

Weijs is speaking in general terms but knows his game better than most having been part of the coaching staff at Anderlecht, the club that Zirkzee joined on loan from Bayern for the 2021/22 season. It was the season in which the boy wonder became a man.

“What professional football asks from you mentally and physically, that is another thing compared to youth football,” Weijs explains. “It was quite clear that he was really talented but he had to make a transition. That season at Anderlecht helped him a lot.”

Under Vincent Kompany, Zirkzee scored 18 goals and provided 13 assists. Weijs talks of a volcano being ready to erupt. “It was tough at the start because teams in Belgium try to make it a really physical battle. But in the end he became used to it. He exploded.”

Could Manchester United be about to make a move for Zirkzee?

Weijs worked particularly closely with him because Kompany’s Anderlecht went with a mentorship system. Every member of the technical staff was assigned a small group of players and Zirkzee was a natural fit as a fellow Dutchman abroad. It still took time.

“I had to work hard to build that relationship and gain his confidence because he was not too open at first. He needs to feel the love. He wants to be respected. But when you invest in that relationship with him and he feels like he can trust you, he opens up.”

Weijs recalls conversations about other sports. “He is a big basketball fan.” And longer discussions about his game and his career. “We would review clips, have discussions about his confidence, about his role in the team, those kind of things.”

Having seen him up close, what makes him so good?

“He has a good physique but it is his skill. His technical abilities in tiny spaces are really spectacular. He is so comfortable on the ball. His first touch is always soft. That means he creates a lot of time for himself to find solutions in complicated situations.”

His technical abilities in tiny spaces are really spectacular.

Willem Weijs on Joshua Zirkzee

He has been compared to Zlatan Ibrahimovic because of his height, skill and flair. Ranking third in Serie A for lay-off passes last season highlights his hold-up play. At Anderlecht, he wowed team-mates with his finishing during training sessions.

“He was outstanding by the end,” says Weijs.

Zirkzee impressed during his season on loan at Anderlecht under Vincent Kompany

During the second half of that season in Belgium, it became obvious that Zirkzee had learned all that he could from the experience. “The training sessions at Anderlecht, they just became too easy for him. It was really clear that he was ready for the next step.”

That next step was Bologna. It was a return to Serie A, where he had previously endured a far less successful loan spell with Parma, making only four substitute appearances. Not everyone was convinced it was the right move. “I had some doubts,” admits Weijs.

He need not have worried. Bologna was the right club. Zirkzee has blossomed this season, a key component in one of the most exciting sides in European football. “I think he had a pretty good coach as well.” Thiago Motta has taken him to another level.

In particular, Zirkzee has significantly improved his off-the-ball work, becoming a force in the game without the football. Playing in a pressing team, he ranked top in Serie A for high turnovers this past season and second for possession won in the final third.

“That is a little example of the transition that I was talking about – from youth player to professional player. That is working hard, mentality, growth mindset, transition game, intensity. Looking back, you can only say that Bologna was the perfect step for him.”

What will be the next step? Milan are seen as front-runners but United have the money to make him theirs and the next Ibrahimovic would certainly appeal to both clubs. A player who can press high, hold the ball up and score goals will always be in demand.

“Now, there is a lot of interest,” says Weijs. The volcano has erupted.

Anthony Joshua next fight: No request to IBF to sanction Daniel Dubois world title fight | Joseph Parker: I deserve rematch | Boxing News

Anthony Joshua has revealed that he is close to confirming the opponent for his upcoming bout.

Joshua, who has boxed once so far in 2024 when he knocked out former UFC champion Francis Ngannou, said: “Nearly finished my negotiations for my next fight. Feeling motivated.”

It has been widely speculated that fellow Briton Daniel Dubois could be in the frame to fight Joshua.

Speaking on the Toe2Toe podcast, Andy Scott, Andy Clarke, Lewis Richardson and Dan Azeez discuss the possibility of Anthony Joshua facing Daniel Dubois

Dubois stopped Filip Hrgovic at the start of this month to win an interim title from the IBF.

But the IBF confirmed to Sky Sports that it has not received a request to sanction Joshua vs Dubois as an IBF world heavyweight title fight.

After beating Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk holds all four of the major heavyweight world championships, including the IBF.

There are other contenders also vying to take on Anthony Joshua. Zhilei Zhang, who defeated Deontay Wilder on the same bill as Dubois’ victory over Hrgovic, would relish boxing AJ. He lost to the Watford man at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

But earlier this month Zhang’s team had not been contacted about potentially fighting AJ.

Speaking on Toe2Toe, Gary Logan says Anthony Joshua’s performance against Francis Ngannou shows he is one of a handful of elite fighters in the world

Another fighter though gunning for a rematch with Joshua is Joseph Parker, who will be making an announcement on Wednesday.

Former WBO champion Parker lost his title to Joshua in 2018. But the New Zealander has been in excellent form recently, beating both Wilder and Zhang.

Parker told Sky Sports: “I’ve been boxing 11 to 12 years and I’ve found what works for me, the formula I’ve got, Andy Lee head trainer, George Lockhart and the work that we’ve been doing together. It’s been a grind ever since we’ve linked up the three of us. But everything is working very well and whatever we’re doing we want to keep it up.”

He thinks he now deserves a second bout with Joshua.

“There’s a lot of people that want to fight Anthony Joshua. I feel like with what I’ve done I can be in a position to fight him,” he said.

But he added: “To be honest, it’s not really about what I want and what he wants. It’s what everyone else wants and a lot of fights are happening in Saudi Arabia.

Who detonated a more explosive right hand KO, Anthony Joshua or Carl Froch?

Usyk and Fury are due to fight in December. If titles do become vacant, Parker thinks he ought to be in the fame to fight for a world championship this year.

“I hope so,” he said. “With the belts all being [held by the] undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, there’s a rematch clause in place, but again these things may or may not happen.

“You never know how things are going to unfold,” he continued. “So we’ll see. We’ll see what happens. But you’ve got Anthony Joshua… I let whatever happens happen and whatever fights they lock, they lock in and I’m ready for whoever.”

Willy Hutchinson ‘very much welcomes’ Joshua Buatsi showdown for WBO interim light-heavyweight title | Boxing News

Willy Hutchinson is taking aiming at Joshua Buatsi and the WBO’s interim light-heavyweight title next.

As Buatsi’s talks with London rival Anthony Yarde stalled, Hutchinson marked himself out with an impressive victory over Craig Richards at the start of the month.

With all four of the major world titles tied up in Artur Beterbiev’s undisputed fight with Dmitry Bivol in October, the WBO has now mandated Hutchinson as the opponent for an interim title fight with Buatsi.

Buatsi said everything was in place for that huge showdown with Anthony Yarde and demanded an answer

The Scot’s manager Shelly Finkel told Sky Sports: “We would very much welcome a fight against Buatsi.”

Ben Shalom, the Londoner’s promoter, expects to finalise Buatsi’s next fight in the coming days.

“He’s in a great position right now,” Shalom told Sky Sports. “He’s worked hard to get to this position and he’s got two potentially great fights ahead.

“Personally I think the Yarde fight is the one that fans want to see most and it’s one that we’ve been trying to make for a long time. But obviously there’s been difficulties making that fight and it’s taken a bit of time.”

But he added: “You’ve got the Hutchinson fight as well, given the order for the WBO interim. So great options.

“He’ll make his choice. He wants the big fights, he wants the big nights, he wants the headline slots, he wants the show for himself so we’ll see what happens over the next week or so.”

Buatsi was full of praise for Azeez’s brave display in his last fight

Buatsi is pushing ultimately for a mandatory shot at one of the belts Beterbiev and Bivol will fight for later this year.

“He’s No 1 in most of the governing bodies,” Shalom said. “I think the IBF [mandatory] is next in line then it’s the WBA. He’s No 1, he’s going to get his opportunity.

“I think it’s a waiting game now on Bivol-Beterbiev whatever happens.

“His fight against Dan Azeez was a final eliminator [for the WBA title]. In the WBC he’s the No 1 as well,” the BOXXER promoter continued.

“He’s got to make the best decisions for the biggest fights for the most amount of money and luckily there’s a couple of options.”

Joshua Zirkzee: Arsenal and Man Utd still monitoring Bologna striker amid strong AC Milan interest | Transfer Centre News

Arsenal and Manchester United are still monitoring Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee amid strong interest from AC Milan.

Both clubs are understood to be keeping a close eye on developments with the striker, who is among a number of attacking options Arsenal and United are looking at this summer.

Sky in Italy are reporting that Milan are still pushing to sign the 23-year-old after flying to London late last week for talks. Nothing was agreed but they remain in contact with his representatives.

Zirkzee has a £34m (€40m) release clause in his contract, which has two years left to run.

Arsenal want to bring in a young striker they can develop, having turned their attention away from players such as Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

Juventus are also keen on Zirkzee but are currently working on other targets, and they would need to sell a striker to bring one in.

When does the summer transfer window open and close?

The 2024 summer transfer window in the Premier League officially opens on Friday June 14 – the same day that Euro 2024 starts.

The window will close on August 30 at 11pm UK time in England and at midnight in Scotland.

The Premier League has brought forward Deadline Day to link up with the other major leagues in Europe. The closing dates were set following discussions with the leagues in England, Germany, Italy, Spain and France.
