Spanish GP: UK schedule, when to watch Practice, Qualifying and Grand Prix in Barcelona live on Sky Sports F1 | F1 News

Formula 1 returns to Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix as a hugely anticipated triple-header of European races get under way at the classic circuit.

After a thrilling run of races which has seen four different teams competing for victories, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is expected to provide a reliable picture of the pecking order as a series of the sport’s more traditional tracks arrive on the calendar.

World championship leader Max Verstappen overcame McLaren and Mercedes cars which appeared to have more pace than his Red Bull to triumph at the end of a dramatic weekend in Canada, but perhaps the most significant takeaway from Montreal was the Silver Arrows of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton being back in contention.

McLaren’s Lando Norris won in Miami at the start of May and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finally won his home race in Monaco for the first time at the end of the month, leaving plenty of mystery as to who will come out on top over the coming weeks.

The action will come thick and fast, with the Austrian and British grands prix following on back-to-back weekends, with only a one-weekend break before races in Hungary and Belgium take us to the summer break. Yes, that means five of your next six weekends will be filled with Formula 1 live on Sky Sports!

Check out the funniest moments from the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix.

Red Bull have expressed confidence that Barcelona, and some of the other upcoming circuits, should better suit their RB20 than recent tracks, while the chasing pack will hope to prove they can challenge Verstappen at any venue.

Also on the schedule in Barcelona is the return of F1 Academy, with Britain’s Abbi Pulling seeking to build on the Miami double that gave her a 34-point lead at the top of the standings.

There’s also F2 and F3 action in Spain, with F1 2025 hopefuls Oliver Bearman and Andrea Kimi Antonelli in action once more.

The most crucial F1 moments of the weekend will come with Qualifying at 3pm on Saturday, and the 66-lap race at 2pm on Sunday.

Callum Simpson to challenge Zak Chelli for British and Commonwealth titles at Barnsley’s Oakwell stadium live on Sky Sports | Boxing News

Callum Simpson to challenge Zak Chelli for British and Commonwealth titles at Barnsley’s Oakwell stadium live on Sky Sports | Boxing News

Zak Chelli will defend his British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles against Callum Simpson on August 3 at the Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley live on Sky Sports.

Chelli is putting his titles on the line in his opponent’s hometown against mandatory challenger Simpson.

It will be Chelli’s first defence of the belts he won in his unanimous points victory over Jack Cullen at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool in January.

Simpson stopped Mbabe in round four

The Fulham fighter will be looking to solidify his position at the top of a highly-competitive domestic division when he makes the long journey north to South Yorkshire where he will take on the unbeaten Simpson.

Simpson, 27, has earned his shot at Chelli’s belts with a series of impressive performances, most recently scoring a fourth-round knockout win over Tanzania’s Dulla Mbabe at The O2 arena in March to remain on course for his mandatory challenge.

Simpson is predicting another knockout performance when he challenges for British and Commonwealth glory in front of his fans at Oakwell stadium, the home of his beloved Barnsley FC.

Zak Chelli’s post-fight interview in January was all about his father and trainer stealing the limelight

“It’s a dream come true to fight in front of my home fans in Barnsley,” he said.

“I’m going to win the British and Commonwealth titles in style. Expect a knockout. This is the fight I’ve been asking for. It’s a chance to prove myself and make my hometown proud.

“I need everyone in Barnsley and beyond to get behind me and really make Oakwell a fortress.”

But Chelli warned: “Winning the British and Commonwealth titles was the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice. This is just the beginning for me.

“Simpson is too scared to challenge me for my titles in London so I’ll show him what a real fighter is and fight him on his home turf.

“On August 3 my hand will be raised and the belts will remain round my waist.”

The stadium will be set for a capacity of 7,000.

Speaking on the Toe2Toe podcast Simpson says he would be interested in fighting light-heavyweight Ben Whittaker

The club’s chief executive Jon Flatman said: “Barnsley FC are proud to host Callum Simpson and fulfil his lifelong ambition to fight at Oakwell.

“The stadium has to always be at the centre of what the community wants and needs. We know the people in this town want to see Callum claim the British title at this iconic venue.

“We are excited to see the people of Barnsley turn out in force.

“Callum has the full support of the club behind him and we know this fight will put the town, the club and the people of Barnsley firmly on the map.

“We are a place of possibilities and we want everyone to have the opportunity to fulfil their dreams.”

The Court of Arbitration for Sport’s panel of three judges dismissed Lia Thomas’ request for arbitration with the World Aquatics governing body, in a ruling released on Wednesday; Thomas wished to overturn rules approved in 2022 that she felt were ‘invalid, unlawful and discriminatory’

Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas failed in her challenge against rules that stop her from competing in elite women’s races

Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas has failed in her challenge against rules that stop her from competing in elite women’s races.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport’s panel of three judges dismissed Thomas’ request for arbitration with the World Aquatics governing body, in a ruling released on Wednesday.

World Aquatics banned transgender women who have been through male puberty from competing in women’s races. It also created an ‘open’ category for which transgender athletes would be eligible.

Thomas had asked the sports court in Switzerland to overturn the rules approved in 2022 that she felt were ‘invalid, unlawful and discriminatory’.

Thomas swam for the University of Pennsylvania and won an NCAA title in meets that are outside the World Aquatics competitive system.

The world swim body argued to CAS that Thomas was not a member of its member federation USA Swimming when the legal case was started. She also had not competed in female events “for the purpose of qualification or selection” for World Aquatics competitions, such as the Olympics or world championships.

“The panel concludes that she lacks standing to challenge the policy and the operational requirements in the framework of the present proceeding,” the court said in its ruling.

In January the ruling said, USA Swimming granted her request for “self-identity verification” as part of its policy on athlete inclusion.

The judges said USA Swimming had no authority “to modify such scope of application” of the world governing body’s rules.

World Aquatics said it welcomed the CAS decision in a case “we believe is a major step forward in our efforts to protect women’s sport”.

“World Aquatics is dedicated to fostering an environment that promotes fairness, respect, and equal opportunities for athletes of all genders and we reaffirm this pledge,” the governing body based in Lausanne said in a statement.

Swimming’s policy on transgender athletes was followed by other top-tier Olympic sports, track and field, then cycling, in excluding from women’s events those who have potentially gained lasting physical advantages from male puberty.

The International Cycling Union noted last year “it is also impossible to rule out the possibility that biomechanical factors such as the shape and arrangement of the bones in their limbs may constitute a lasting advantage for female transgender athletes”.

Thomas was represented at CAS by Toronto-based Tyr, the legal firm that has represented two-time Olympic champion runner Caster Semenya.

Semenya is excluded from running in her specialist 800m event due to World Athletics rules on athletes with differences in sex development who have elevated levels of testosterone.

Thomas’s lawyer, Carlos Sayao, did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the CAS decision.
The CAS judges declined World Aquatics request for Thomas to pay its legal costs and other expenses incurred in the case.

The judging panel included two of the highest-profile CAS arbitrators: Thomas selected Richard McLaren, the Canadian investigator who helped prove the Russian doping scandal at the Sochi Olympics; and World Aquatics chose Ulrich Haas, a German law professor who helped judge cases involving Manchester City and Grand Slam tennis champion Simona Halep.

The CAS panel was chaired by a Paris-based Spanish arbitrator Carmen Nez-Lagos.

Jamie Chadwick: British driver to start on pole position for Indy NXT race at Road America live on Sky Sports | F1 News

Britain’s Jamie Chadwick will start on pole position for the Indy NXT race at Road America, which is live on Sky Sports Mix on Sunday at 6.05pm.

Chadwick was claiming her maiden pole position in Indy NXT, which is a feeder series to IndyCar, and is just the third woman to achieve that feat.

In May, the 26-year-old became the first woman to stand on the podium in Indy NXT when she took third place at Indianapolis.

She will look to stand on the top step of the podium after Sunday’s 20-lap race, which begins at 6.05 on Sky Sports Mix. Viewers with a Sky box can tune into Sky Sports Mix for free and can watch the IndyCar race at Road America at 8.30pm on the same channel.

“I’m so happy. We struggled a little bit this weekend chasing balance. When [team-mate) Louis [Foster] did the lap he did, I knew we would have a good car,” said Chadwick.

“Track conditions improving, this is our shot in our group, as well. I really thought we could make the most of this opportunity. It’s going to be a tough race, but I’m confident in what we can do.”

Chadwick also launched a new initiative in an attempt to increase female participation in grassroots motorsport earlier this year.

The three-time W Series champion partnered with Daytona Motorsport in a year-long commitment to provide free karting and mentorship for girls.

She is the UK’s most decorated active female motorsport driver, having dominated all three years of the W Series before crossing over to the fiercely-competitive Indy NXT series.

Chadwick is also part of F1 team Williams’ driver academy, and is taking on a mentoring role with their F1 representative Lia Block this season in F1 Academy.

Tries from Zach Eckersley, Lance Todd Trophy winner Bevan French and Liam Farrell, plus three conversions from Harry Smith, secured an 18-8 victory for Wigan Warriors over Warrington Wolves in the men’s Challenge Cup final at Wembley; tributes were paid to Rob Burrow CBE throughout the day

Last Updated: 08/06/24 5:17pm

Wigan captain Liam Farrell lifts the Challenge Cup after Wigan’s 18-8 victory over Warrington at Wembley

Sam Burgess’ hopes of claiming the Challenge Cup in his first season as Warrington Wolves head coach were dashed as Wigan Warriors triumphed 18-8 in Saturday’s final at Wembley.

On an emotional day which saw the rugby league community commemorate the life of Rob Burrow CBE, tempers flared in the opening minutes of the game as both Mike Cooper and Matt Dufty were sent to the sin bin for dangerous tackles in quick succession.

Although Josh Thewlis kicked Warrington ahead from a penalty goal, it was Wigan who led 12-2 at half-time thanks to converted tries from Zach Eckersley, making only his third start for the club in place of the suspended Adam Keighran, and Bevan French.

A third from skipper Liam Farrell approaching the midway point of the second half put the Warriors firmly on course for a record-extending 21st triumph in the knockout competition and although Dufty grabbed one for the Wolves, there was no way back for his side.

Story of the game

As well as being one of rugby league’s showpiece events, this year’s Challenge Cup final saw the sport come together to pay tribute to Burrow following his death last Sunday at the age of 41 following a four-and-a-half-year battle with motor neurone disease.

A minute’s silence was observed before both the women’s and men’s finals, along with a minute’s applause at the seventh minute of each game, while Burrow’s image was on display on the big screens at Wembley. Fans left tributes at the Rugby League Statue outside the ground as well.

When play did begin at 3.07pm, a time chosen to honour Burrow, any doubts about just how intense the latest chapter of this rivalry would be were dispelled in the opening three minutes as both teams had players sent to the sin bin by referee Chris Kendall.

Warrington's Matt Dufty was sin-binned early on

Wigan’s Bevan French scored a try and was named Lance Todd Trophy winner

Having seen out an early spell of pressure following the restart which was ended when Matty Ashton was gang-tackled into touch, Wigan moved further in front in the 56th minute when the ball was worked through the hands of Harry Smith and Jai Field to send Farrell racing away from around 40 metres out to finish.

That seemed to light a fire under the Wolves though and having been camped on Wigan’s line following a repeat set and a goal-line drop-out, Dufty got the ball and carved his way through the defence for a try with just over a quarter of an hour remaining.

But that was as good as it got for Warrington and they were unable to make further inroads, as Wigan celebrated their first Wembley triumph for 11 years, with their last Challenge Cup win in 2022 having come at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

What’s next?

Johnson-Thompson’s coach Aston Moore: “Kat has developed a small niggle in her right leg and in light of the proximity of the Olympic Games we have chosen to bank what we have learned from this first day of competition and withdraw from the heptathlon”; Ireland win 4x400m mixed relay gold

Great Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson pulled out of the European Championships with a leg injury

Katarina Johnson-Thompson has withdrawn from the European Athletics Championships in Rome after three events of the heptathlon due to injury.

The reigning world champion was down in ninth place following the 100 metres hurdles, high jump and shot put and pulled out ahead of the final event of day one, the 200m.

“Kat has developed a small niggle in her right leg and, in light of the proximity of the Olympic Games, we have chosen to bank what we have learned from this first day of competition and withdraw from the heptathlon,” Johnson-Thompson’s coach Aston Moore said.

“We don’t want to risk losing any time from training which could be the result if she was to carry on competing with it for another day. We wish all the other competitors well for the rest of the competition.”

Johnson-Thompson ran 13.66 seconds in the hurdles, more than half a second down on her personal best, before clearing 1.83 metres in the high jump to move up to fourth place.

The 31-year-old could only manage a best of 12.44m in the shot put to slip to ninth, more than 300 points behind Olympic champion Nafissatou Thiam, who had cleared 1.95m in the high jump to take command of the competition.

Ireland claim gold in 4x400m mixed relay

The British quartet of Charlie Carvell, Hannah Kelly, Lewis Davey and Emily Newnham finished fifth in the final of the inaugural 4x400m mixed relay as Ireland’s Chris O’Donnell, Rhasidat Adeleke, Thomas Barr and Sharlene Mawdsley took gold ahead of home nation Italy.

On the track, Jemma Reekie had earlier led team-mates Georgia Bell and Katie Snowden into the women’s 1,500m final, while Elliot Giles and Thomas Randolph reached the men’s 800m semi-finals.

Morgan Lake also reached the women’s high jump final, while Lawrence Okoye finished eighth in the discus final with a best of 63.48m in the final round.

Italy had claimed the first medals of the championship with a one-two in the women’s 20km walk, where the drama was reserved for the battle for bronze.

Spain’s Laura Garcia-Caro looked to have secured third place and was already celebrating when she realised to her horror that she was about to be overtaken on the line by Ukraine’s Lyudmila Olyanovska.

Shenae Ciesiolka and Tarryn Aiken scored Queensland tries, before a Lauren Brown drop-goal sealed a one-point win vs New South Wales in Game II of Women’s State of Origin; Game III in historic best-of-three series takes place in Townsville, Queensland on June 27 live on Sky Sports

Last Updated: 06/06/24 1:22pm

Queensland levelled the Women’s State of Origin series at 1-1, coming from behind to clinch a late win vs New South Wales

A Lauren Brown drop-goal with two minutes to play sealed an 11-10 win for Queensland in an epic State of Origin contest at New South Wales, levelling the series.

In front of record women’s Origin crowd of 25,782, the Maroons dug deep to keep the series alive after trailing by six points with 10 minutes to play.

Keeley Davis and Tiana Penitani scored tries for New South Wales’ Sky Blues – either side of a Shenae Ciesiolka try – before Queensland’s Tarryn Aiken hit back with a superb individual try, which Brown converted to level the scores into the closing stages.

The Maroons – who lost 22-12 in Game I – then recovered the ball with three minutes to play, and set up a position for Brown to produce a drop-goal winner into the face of a wind.

The two sides will now face off in a series decider in Queensland on Thursday June 27, live on Sky Sports.

Lauren Brown struck a drop-goal with two minutes to play, as the Maroons hit back in their Origin series

When Tiana Penitani scored a try in the corner for New South Wales, the Sky Blues looked to have done enough to win

Maroons five-eighth Aiken came up with a dazzling solo try in the 62nd minute as the defending champions refused to lie down and with Brown’s conversion it was locked up at 10-10.

A dropped ball by Sky Blues prop Caitlan Johnston with three minutes to play ensured a grandstand finish and it was Brown who slotted a composed field goal into the breeze to put the Maroons ahead 11-10.

From there the defending champions hung on to the lead and will head home to Queensland for a decider on June 27.

Three tries from Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow set Queensland on course for a 38-10 victory in Sydney in the opening match of this year’s State of Origin series; New South Wales had debutant Joseph Suallii sent off for a high tackle on Reece Walsh just eight minutes into the match

New South Wales were reduced to 12 men in the opening 10 minutes of their clash with Queensland as Joseph Suaalii became just the sixth man to be sent off in State of Origin history

Joseph Suaalii’s first-half dismissal proved costly for New South Wales as Queensland triumphed in Game I of this year’s State of Origin series.

Suaalii, one of five debutants in the Blues team, was given his marching orders just eight minutes into the match in Sydney for a high tackle on Maroons full-back Reece Walsh.

The visitors made the most of that numerical advantage as well, with a hat-trick of tries from Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, two from Ben Hunt and one from Xavier Coates securing a 38-10 victory.

Reigning champions Queensland had taken the lead when both sides still had 13 on the pitch after Daly Cherry-Evans’ burst out of dummy-half set up Hunt for the opening try in the fifth minute.

New South Wales, with former New Zealand head coach Michael Maguire at the helm for the first time, were then dealt a bigger blow when Samoa international Suaalii was sent off by referee Ashley Klein for his high shot on Walsh which saw the Maroons man forced out of the game.

Valentine Holmes kicked the first of his seven goals from the resulting penalty, yet NSW hit back on 14 minutes through a try from James Tedesco which was converted by Nicho Hynes.

However, that was as close as the Blues got for the rest of the game and Queensland seized the initiative with two tries in the space of five minutes from Tabuai-Fidow.

Trailing 20-6 at half time, New South Wales were quickest out of the blocks when play resumed as they crossed again in the 44th minute through Zac Lomax.

Despite their best efforts a man down, the Maroons would prove too strong though and Hunt went over for his second try of the game in the 67th minute.

Coates got in on the scoring act with 10 minutes to go and Tabuai-Fidow’s converted try in the final minute put the seal on Queensland’s biggest-ever victory in Sydney.

History is on the side of Billy Slater’s side as they bid to retain the Origin shield for the third year in a row, with New South Wales’ only series win after losing the first game in Sydney coming 30 years ago.

What’s next?

The Women’s State of Origin series takes centre stage on Thursday with the second match between New South Wales and Queensland taking place at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle, live on Sky Sports Action and Sky Sports Main Event (10.45am kick-off).
