James Anderson to stay with England as fast bowler mentor after Test retirement at Lord’s | Cricket News

James Anderson will remain in England’s Test set-up this summer after agreeing to join their backroom staff following his valedictory international appearance at Lord’s next week.

The 41-year-old is set for an emotional farewell in the first Test of the home summer against the West Indies, starting on July 10 live on Sky Sports, after being informed England are looking to build towards the future.

While England are ready to move on from Anderson on the field, the vast experience he has accrued across 187 Tests in which he has taken 700 wickets – both a record for non-spinners – means they are reluctant to cut the cord altogether.

Take a look at some of the landmark moments throughout Anderson’s Test career, with the 41-year-old becoming the first seamer to reach 700 wickets

Anderson, who has yet to decide whether he will continue playing county cricket for Lancashire, will therefore step into a newly-created role as England’s fast-bowling mentor for the last two Tests against the Windies and a three-match series versus Sri Lanka that follows.

“He’s got so much to offer English cricket, we don’t want to see that go,” said Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket. “He’s going to be with us all summer. It’s something that he’s very keen to do as well.

On the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, Nasser Hussain recalls his first memories of Anderson

“He hasn’t done loads and loads of it, but we’ve got no question about his knowledge and experience with bowling. We have a great opportunity for the rest of the summer to find out just how much he enjoys it or doesn’t enjoy it. What he does with Lancashire, we’ll probably work out after the Lord’s Test.

“Someone like Jimmy Anderson is going to have lots of options. I think English cricket would be very lucky if he chooses to stay in our game.”

Big changes ahead of summer Tests

England have had a significant shake-up of their squad for the first two Tests to face the Windies, with no room for Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes, Jack Leach or Ollie Robinson.

Michael Holding was full of praise for Anderson after announcing he will retire following the first Test against West Indies

Bairstow is the most high-profile casualty just a few months on from his 100th Test appearance in the 4-1 series defeat in India, where a top score of 38 in 10 innings left his position vulnerable.

The Yorkshireman lit the touchpaper for the ‘Bazball’ era with six Test centuries in 2022 but he has struggled to hit the heights since suffering a horrific leg break at the back end of that summer.

Sky Sports’ James Cole looks at England’s Test squad announcement and explains why this feels like the start of a ‘new era’ for Ben Stokes’ side

“Jonny just needs to get back to what he was a couple of years ago,” Key said. “Generally, his form, in all formats, has just been going slightly in the wrong direction.”

While Bairstow and Foakes have engaged in a long-term tug-of-war for the wicketkeeping spot, Jamie Smith has supplanted both and will take the gloves at the home of cricket.

The Surrey player is joined in the squad by two other uncapped players in fast bowlers Dillon Pennington and Gus Atkinson, while Shoaib Bashir has been selected ahead of fellow Somerset spinner Jack Leach.

Michael Atherton discusses his first impressions of Dillon Pennington and why he is excited to see what the Nottinghamshire seamer can bring to England’s Test squad

Smith is a specialist bat and wicketkeeping understudy to Foakes at Surrey but Key, who rejected suggestions of a “Bazball reset” for this series, is a long-term admirer of a player averaging in excess of 50 in this year’s Vitality County Championship.

“We’ve been watching Jamie Smith for quite some time,” said Key. “You just see players who are rare talents and he looks like that. There’s a lot made of us just wanting someone who can go out there and play shots and that’s not the case.

Wednesday 10th July 10:00am

“We want someone who can not only up the ante when they’re batting with the tail but soak up pressure when they need to as well and we feel Jamie Smith can do that. Often you’re not making judgements on what they’ve done. You’re making judgements on what they’re going to do.”

Key was speaking just a few days after England’s semi-final defeat by eventual champions India in the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

While they reached the last four, England beat just one of the four Test nations they faced, with captain Jos Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott already under pressure after an abysmal 50-over World Cup last year.

Asked whether the pair will be in situ for England’s next white-ball assignment against Australia later this summer, Key added: “We’ll let the dust settle and move forward from there.

“I’m not going to rush anything. I don’t think it’s a bad sign when you get to a semi-final. At times I thought we showed how good we were in that. And at times we were inconsistent.”

Watch the first Test between England and West Indies, at Lord’s, live on Sky Sports Cricket from 10am on Wednesday July 10 (11am first ball). The series then continues at Trent Bridge (July 18-22) before the final game at Edgbaston (July 26-30)

Lance Stroll: Aston Martin driver signs contract extension to stay at team until at least 2026 F1 season | F1 News

Lance Stroll’s expected stay at Aston Martin has been formally confirmed with the Canadian penning a contract extension to continue at the team into the sport’s new era of regulations, which begin in 2026.

Stroll, whose father Lawrence owns the team as part of a consortium, has been with the Silverstone-based outfit since 2019 and the extended deal means he will stay as team-mate to Fernando Alonso for at least the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Alonso signed a two-year extension to commit his own future to the team in April.

Although currently enduring a disappointing season after a standout 2023, Aston Martin retain big hopes for the future and will switch to a works supply of Honda engines when F1’s new power units regulations are introduced for 2026. They have also held discussions with Adrian Newey in an attempt to sign the design genius when he leaves Red Bull in the first part of next year.

“I’m super happy to have committed to staying with the team for 2025 and beyond,” said Stroll.

“It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come in the last five years; we’ve grown so much as a team and there’s still so much more to look forward to.”

Lance Stroll is on the charge after switching to the softs, passing Zhou Guanyu in the tunnel and then going up the inside of Logan Sargeant on the exit of Turn One

The 25-year-old Stroll, who began his career at Williams before joining his current team when it was known as Racing Point five years ago after his father had rescued the outfit from administration, claimed two podiums and one pole position for them in 2020 in what stands as his best season so far.

But the Canadian has yet to either out-qualify or out-score any of his three team-mates – Sergio Perez (2019-2020), Sebastian Vettel (2021-2022), Alonso (2023-present) – over a full season.

Stroll has 17 points to Alonso’s 41 so far in a difficult 2024 for Aston Martin, with a best race finish of sixth at April’s Australian GP.

Mike Krack, Aston Martin’s team principal, added: “We are delighted to confirm Lance’s future with Aston Martin Aramco.

“He has played a key role in building this team. His technical feedback, alongside his committed simulator work, has helped contribute to the continuous development of the car each season.

“The consistency and stability of both Lance and Fernando remaining with our team is a great platform to continue to realise our ambitions. We look forward to creating some more incredible memories and achieving further success together.”

With Alpine confirming a contract extension for Pierre Gasly in the hour before Aston Martin delivered their own news on Stroll at the start of media day for the Austrian GP, just seven seats on the 20-car 2025 grid now remain unfilled.

Erik ten Hag to stay as Manchester United manager and is in talks to extend contract | Football News

Erik ten Hag to stay as Manchester United manager and is in talks to extend contract | Football News

Erik ten Hag will stay on as Manchester United manager.

United and Ten Hag are said to be aligned after the club’s end-of-season review, a process which lasted longer than two weeks and saw other managers sounded out for the role.

However, it is understood the conclusion from the review was that Ten Hag should remain in charge and negotiations have begun over a new contract for the manager.

Ten Hag’s current contract ends at the end of next season, with the club having the option of extending it by a further 12 months.

United finished a disappointing eighth, their worst finish in the Premier League era, but beat rivals Manchester City to lift the FA Cup – Ten Hag’s second trophy in as many years.

Ten Hag had to contend with an injury ravaged squad throughout the season but managed to salvage Europa League qualification with the victory over City at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel, Thomas Frank, Kieran McKenna and Gareth Southgate were all linked with taking over at Old Trafford but the club have now committed to Ten Hag.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS has taken control of the club’s footballing operations since becoming a minority shareholder in February and has overseen major staff changes.

Jason Wilcox has begun work as technical director while Omar Berrada will start as the new chief executive this summer, but Ten Hag will continue in his role with a year left on his contract.

‘Man Utd spoke to other managers – but Ten Hag could now receive new deal’

Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth:

“Remember, he did maintain through all of his talks with Sir Jim Ratcliffe that he believed he would be the man to lead Manchester United forward, that he was under contract until next summer at least and he had no reason to believe he wasn’t going to be the manager.

“Manchester United have been conducting their post-season review after that FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.

“After that review of the last season and first-team operations, the club and Erik ten Hag held constructive discussions about what happened over the past season and what could happen in the future.

“Manchester United considered all eventualities. They did speak to other managers and representatives of other managers – Thomas Tuchel, Kieran McKenna and Mauricio Pochettino. But the conclusion after that review and all of those talks was that Ten Hag would remain as manager.

“The club and Ten Hag are believed to be aligned and have now entered negotiations over a contract extension. This is really significant. He’s got one year left on his contract.”

T20 World Cup: South Africa hold off Bangladesh by four runs to stay unbeaten | Cricket News

Spinner Keshav Maharaj bowled a six-run, two-wicket final over as South Africa held off Bangladesh by four runs to stay unbeaten in the T20 World Cup on Monday.

Bangladesh needed 11 from the last six deliveries for victory, then needed six off the last two balls.

Mahmudullah came within a couple of feet of getting those runs with just one blow, but he was caught at long-on by Aiden Markram after heaving a full toss down the ground.

Taskin Ahmed came to the crease and faced the final delivery, another full toss by Maharaj. Ahmed swung and managed only one run as Bangladesh finished on 109-7 in pursuit of South Africa’s 113-6.

On a typically tough batting pitch at Nassau County Stadium, South Africa got to that target thanks to a 79-run partnership between Heinrich Klaasen (46) and David Miller (29).

Maharaj finished with 3-27 in four overs as Bangladesh replied, while Kagiso Rabada (2-19) and Anrich Nortje (2-17) also bowled well.

South Africa stayed top of Group D with a third win and are in pole position to secure a Super 8 spot.

Bangladesh’s first loss in two matches keeps them in second place.

What they said

South Africa captain Aiden Markram…

“You’re always pretty nervous in the final over in a game like that. Sometimes you get on the right side, sometimes not, but it’s very entertaining.

“[delivery No] 19.5 could’ve gone anywhere, could’ve gone two more metres. Depends on the situation, you want to drag the game.

“Seamers were bowling well, anything could happen in the last over. We’re putting Klaasen and Miller under pressure but they’ve been great. Fantastic for Klaasy to get back in form.”

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto…

“This is the match we should have won, we nearly did but the last couple of overs they bowled well. It can happen in cricket.

On leg-spinner Rishad Hossain: “Rishad is very good, he’s bowled well in the last two games and in practice.

“We’ve struggled with leg-spin in 10-15 years but hope he goes far. Wherever we play, we get a lot of support. Hope it’s the same in the West Indies.”

What’s Next?

There is just one game taking place on Tuesday June 11, with Pakistan searching for their first win against Canada, which is live from 3.30pm on Sky Sports.

Sri Lanka also take on Nepal from 12.30am, live on Sky Sports.
