Gareth Southgate: FA has set no Euro 2024 target for England boss to keep job but is succession planning | Football News

The Football Association already has a plan in place to find Gareth Southgate’s successor, though it has so far not spoken to any possible candidate to replace him, and has not set specific targets for the England manager to achieve in order to keep his job.

Speaking on the eve of the European Championships, which England go into as one of the favourites to lift the trophy, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham fell short of saying he wants Southgate to stay on in the role beyond his current contract, which expires in December.

But it is clear Bullingham thinks Southgate has revolutionised the team, both on and off the pitch, and he has no plans to allow him to leave without a fight.

Sky Sports News’ senior reporter Rob Dorsett provides an update on England’s preparations for Euro 2024, as defender John Stones misses training due to illness

“I think the world of Gareth,” Bullingham said. “I think he has done a phenomenal job.

“I think he’s transformed the fortunes of our men’s senior team. I think that’s not just off the pitch, which a lot of people talk about – you can see the culture. But also the performances on the pitch. [Since he took over] he has won about half of our knockout games, which are the measures we really use. You know we value him massively.”

Sky Sports News has learned the explosive interview Southgate did with German newspaper Bild – where he said he expected to leave his role as England manager if he failed to win these Euros – was actually recorded in April, even though it was only published earlier this week.

Bullingham confirmed there is an agreement on both sides to sit down shortly after the Euros has finished, to “talk about everything” and decide whether or not Southgate should stay on.

Take a look at the ‘very remote’ and ‘incredible’ training base where England will stay throughout their 2024 European Championships campaign

The 53-year-old’s contract expires in December – a time-frame that was deliberate, to give both employee and employer time to reflect before making a decision.

“Gareth has been really, really clear that he wants to talk about that after the tournament,” Bullingham said.

“And I don’t want to provide any distraction for him and the team, and I want to respect the fact that he wants to talk about the future after the tournament.”

FA has had no approach from any club for Southgate

Bullingham is clearly frustrated by reports suggesting the FA does not have a plan in place to find Southgate’s successor.

He said: “I’ve seen some things about, ‘Have we got a plan, haven’t we?’ Any organisation has a succession plan in place for their top employees, and we are no different to that.

“A succession plan normally includes everything from what you do for the short-term cover, through to a process you follow, through to [drawing up] a candidate pool. We have that for all our top employees.”

Sky Sports News understands Southgate is seeking a top job in club management after he finishes his role with England – whenever that day comes. He has been strongly linked with Manchester United, where his former FA boss Dan Ashworth is due to take over as sporting director.

However, United have decided Erik ten Hag will stay in his post for the short term at least, with a year left on his Old Trafford contract, and Ashworth is still in limbo as United negotiate his release from his Newcastle contract.

It is thought Manchester United want to pay as little as £3m in compensation, while Newcastle are calling for a fee in excess of £10m.

Bullingham has confirmed the FA has had no approach from any club to speak to Southgate about possible managerial vacancies, but it is thought Southgate has been sounded out about taking over the role at Old Trafford, at some point in the future.

Image:
Southgate has been sounded out about the possibility of becoming Manchester United manager one day

In his interview with Bild, Southgate said: “If we don’t win [the Euros], I probably won’t be here anymore. It might be the last chance.”

But Bullingham says that is not how the FA sees it. He is adamant it would be wrong to set targets on how far England must go in Germany, in order for Southgate to keep his job.

He said: “[The team] could go further but be playing poorly or have a really unlucky result where you get a couple of red cards and hit the woodwork three times.

“I think setting an arbitrary figure isn’t the right way to go. I think we step back and look at everything after the tournament.”

FA to pay for police officer to probe any race hate at Euros

The FA is to pay for a specialist police officer to investigate and prosecute anyone who racially abuses England players at the European Championships, which begin in Germany on Friday.

Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho were each targeted with online hate after they missed penalties in the final of the last Euros at Wembley in 2021, and the FA is determined that – even though it cannot prevent such abuse happening again at this tournament – it will have measures in place to try to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Bullingham told Sky Sports News: “In the past, what we’ve done is pull together all the data – effectively an evidence pack – to give to the police.

“This time we’ve gone a stage further, where we’re actually funding someone within the UK Football Policing Unit, so within the British police. We’re actually funding a unit which will then prosecute.

“What we don’t want to do is create a pack that we then give to the police….but then they don’t have the resource to actually take that forward. This is to make sure that….if there are instances of the vile abuse we have seen before, it gets prosecuted.”

Bullingham says the initial cost is expected to be around £25,000 – but that could be more, depending on how many incidents the police need to investigate. The FA has enough resource set aside to fund as many investigations as are necessary.

“It depends how many prosecutions there are. It is a cost per investigation,” Bullingham added.

Former Thornaby chief executive says decision to close women’s section was ‘complex’ | Football News

Former Thornaby chief executive says decision to close women’s section was ‘complex’ | Football News

The former chief executive of Thornaby has spoken out to address “misconceptions” over the closure of the club’s women’s section.

Trevor Wing was one of six people who resigned from the Teesside club’s nine-strong committee on Monday after voting in favour of shutting down the women’s team, a decision which prompted widespread criticism including from England forward Beth Mead.

Wing said the decision had been “portrayed as a sweeping and callous move” but the reality was far more complex.

Wing disputed a social media post from Thornaby FC’s women’s section which said the entire women’s and girls’ section had been removed, saying the committee had not voted to close down the women’s junior teams, which he said were “self-sufficient” and could have continued.

He added that the decision to shut down the senior women’s team “was not taken lightly” but that it had become evident that running a men’s and a women’s team was “financially unsustainable”.

“I feel it is important to clarify the situation and address some misconceptions,” Wing said in a statement.

“The decision to discontinue the women’s first team and junior teams has been portrayed as a sweeping and callous move, but the reality is more complex. Financial constraints have placed significant pressure on our club.

“After extensive discussions and deliberation with all stakeholders, it became evident that maintaining both the men’s and women’s first teams was financially unsustainable.

“Given the men’s team has been an established part of Thornaby FC since 2000, the difficult decision was made to prioritise its continuity.

“It is important to note that the women’s junior teams have historically operated independently, using the Thornaby FC name and badge while playing at various other venues.

“These teams were self-sufficient and their operation could have continued under the same model.

“It should be recognised that Thornaby FC has not had male junior teams for several years, further highlighting the financial limitations we face.

“My commitment to women’s football spans over five decades including 16 years of volunteer service at Thornaby FC and 15 years with the North Riding County FA.

“I have actively promoted women’s football, serving as a coach (and) secretary for Middlesbrough Ladies and as a representative on the FA’s Women’s Committee it is deeply disappointing to be mischaracterised as someone against women’s football by those who do not fully understand my history or the complete context of our decision.

“The decision was not taken lightly, and it was made with the club’s long-term stability in mind. I remain dedicated to supporting and promoting women’s football and hope that the community will continue to support Thornaby FC through these challenging times.”

The women’s team had been playing in the North East Regional Women’s Football League – tier six of the football pyramid.

Arsenal and England striker Mead, who was born in nearby Whitby, described it as a “horrible” decision.

The Labour candidate for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East, Andy McDonald, said on Monday that the remaining committee members wanted to retain a female team and “build a new diverse and wide-ranging board alongside representatives from the women’s team”.

The Football Association was “very disappointed” and said its local branch, the North Riding County FA, was in contact with the club.

Scotland reporter notebook: Steve Clarke and co want to lead Euro 2024 party like it’s 1999 | Football News

As Scotland prepare to open Euro 2024 against hosts Germany on Friday, Sky Sports News reporter Luke Shanley explains why Steve Clarke’s side have to believe they can spring a surprise…

Scotland are ready to take centre stage and I don’t mean John McGinn and his Bavarian dancing band. Steve Clarke’s team will open Euro 2024 against hosts Germany and they don’t want to be the supporting act.

It is the first overseas tournament Scotland have qualified for since the World Cup in France 1998, ironically another tournament in which Scotland played in the opening game. That was against world champions Brazil in Paris.

Image:
Scotland’s training base is in the Bavarian town Garmisch Partenkirchen

Scotland can look back 26 years and see the benefits of being written off, forgotten, and looked upon as bit parts in a global event. The team lost 2-1 that day to a late Tom Boyd own goal after a good performance that almost pulled off a shock with an approach that got the balance between defence and attack right while also riding their luck until Boyd’s unfortunate moment.

Tom Boyd's own goal ended Scotland's hopes of a shock against Brazil at the World Cup in 1999
Image:

This time around Scotland will face the hosts who have the weight of expectation on their shoulders with signs of improvement under Julian Nagelsmann. The Scotland coaching staff never believed the narrative that Germany were on the downward path and it was the best time to play them.

Scotland themselves have won just one of their last nine games and that was against Gibraltar last week in a warm-up match in Faro, Portugal. Clarke has spoken about not having any ‘Negative Normans’ around the camp and fair enough, given the fantastic form early in the qualifying campaign. It is just one defeat in their last eight competitive games, including five wins in a row at the start of qualifying.

Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour is hoping to start the Euro 2024 opener against Germany and go up against ‘one of the best midfielders in the game’ in Toni Kroos

The national team need to rediscover that level of performance, especially the approach in the win over Spain at Hampden Park last year. The friendlies against top nations like England, France and Netherlands served a purpose, even if the results didn’t go Scotland’s way.

Clarke will already have his mind made up on his team selection. He will have had some big decisions to make given the pre-tournament injuries, firstly to right wing-backs Aaron Hickey and Nathan Patterson before the squad was announced and then to strikers Lyndon Dykes and Ben Doak, who did make the cut.

Celtic’s Anthony Ralston and Bristol City’s Ross McCrorie are vying for that right wing-back position. My money would be on the former with the latter only making his debut in the win over Gibraltar.

Will Lawrence Shankland or Che Adams lead the line?

Lawrence Shankland scored in the last game against Finland with a good header and is the player of the year in Scotland thanks to 31 goals with Heart of Midlothian, but it is likely Che Adams will be given the nod ahead of him. He scored 18 goals for Southampton as they won promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs and previous form for Scotland could be enough. He ended a 10-game drought at international level with a goal in Faro last week.

There may be one or two other tough picks for Clarke in central defence, but he has plenty of options who can slot in in that position.

John McGinn joins in some Bavarian dancing as Scotland arrive in Germany ahead of Euro 2024!

When Scotland arrived at their training base in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, they were met by thunder and lightning but also a fantastic welcome from the mayor Elisabeth Koch and local residents, including some ex-pats. The team got off the bus to head into a small hall for an event in which John McGinn, who else, decided to partake in Bavarian dancing. It was great to see the team and the locals mix with no police, no barriers and no restrictions, a throwback considering what football is today.

Remember the saying, ‘No Scotland, No Party’. It was great to see the town and the team come together but don’t let the optics cloud the reality. The hard work has been under way for some time now. Clarke will have this Scotland team ready, the big question is, will it be good enough to perform on one of the biggest stages?

It has been 25 years since Scotland beat Germany in Bremen thanks to a Don Hutchison strike, The Tartan Army want to party like it’s 1999 again.

Scotland’s record vs Germany

The teams have faced each other 17 times and last met in a European Championship qualifier in 2015 with Scotland losing to the then world champions 3-2 at Hampden Park.

Two of Scotland’s current squad, James Forrest and Grant Hanley, started that match in Glasgow.

Scotland have only beaten their opening opponents four times, with the last victory coming in a friendly in 1999.

Managed by Craig Brown, Scotland defeated a German side that included names such as Oliver Bierhoff and Lothar Matthaus thanks to the second-half goal from Hutchison.

Erik ten Hag: How did Manchester United come to decision to keep Dutch coach and what happens now? | Football News

Erik ten Hag: How did Manchester United come to decision to keep Dutch coach and what happens now? | Football News

Erik Ten Hag is set to stay at Manchester United after the club finalised their end-of-season review. But what happens now?

United finished a disappointing eighth, their worst finish in the Premier League era, and despite beating rivals Manchester City to lift the FA Cup and Ten Hag’s second trophy in as many years, speculation was still rife over the Dutchman’s future after INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe took over the club’s football operations in February.

But United have now confirmed that Ten Hag will be staying on as their manager and the 54-year-old is now in talks with the club over an improved contract.

To explain how United came to this decision, Sky Sports News chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol goes through all the details.

How close was Ten Hag to losing his job?

Here are the answers to five of your most popular questions after Manchester United confirmed Erik Ten Hag is remaining as manager.

Solhekol: Ten Hag was aware that it was touch and go as to whether he kept his job or not.

Man Utd had their post-season review and they did explore all options. Ten Hag won the FA Cup at the end of the season, against the backdrop of lots of reports that he was going to lose his job. No sooner are the celebrations over after losing the FA Cup, United are contacting other managers – either directly or through their representatives.

It has obviously been well-documented that they looked at other managers like Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Frank.

After much speculation, Erik ten Hag is set to stay at Manchester United following INEOS’ end-of-season review. We take a look at the Dutchman’s highs and lows during his tenure at Old Trafford so far.

There were widespread reports in the UK and Germany that Tuchel met Sir Jim Ratcliffe in Monaco last week. We know there has been contact with representatives of Pochettino. Hiring Gareth Southgate is impossible as he is managing England at the Euros.

United were exploring all eventualities, but ultimately, they decided they would stick with Ten Hag.

Although it can’t have been a particularly nice experience for Ten Hag to have had this after winning the FA Cup, he’s been in football a long time and knows how these things work.

Why did Man Utd speak to other managers?

Solhekol: United were very clear that they were having a post-season review and that the review was going to look at the manager’s position.

When Ratcliffe and INEOS came in, they invested in the business and it was their right to look at all areas of the business.

Ten Hag was someone they inherited as a manager and you could argue they were doing what every owner would do when coming into a club by looking at all facets of the business.

How important was the FA Cup win for Ten Hag’s future?

Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth reports on the news that Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is set to stay at Old Trafford ahead of the new Premier League season.

Solhekol: You can certainly make the case that if Man Utd hadn’t won the FA Cup then Ten Hag would have lost his job.

But you can also make the case that if it wasn’t for Haji Wright being offside in the semi-final against Coventry, he also would have lost his job.

It’s a game of fine margins but in a post-season review, having the FA Cup and European football from that, it makes a decent case for him to stay. Without those things it’s a difficult case to make for him to stay in the job.

Has his relationship with the younger players in the squad made a difference?

The best goals Manchester United scored in the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Solhekol: INEOS have been impressed with the way Ten Hag has handled the development of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

INEOS do now want to go in a different direction at Man Utd and the days of spending £80m on one player is over.

They want to sign young players and Ten Hag has proven that he is the right man for those players.

That is definitely one of the reasons why they have stuck with him.

Why is Ten Hag getting a new contract?

Manchester United fans outside Old Trafford gave mixed opinions on the news that Erik ten Hag will remain as manager after INEOS decided to keep the Dutchman.

Solhekol: The complication is he’s only got one year left on his contract. When you’re a manager of the stature of Erik ten Hag, someone who has had a lot of success in the game, you need more security than that. He will want more certainty going forward.

This summer, if he had left United, he could have managed Ajax again and he could have managed Bayern Munich. If he had done that, he would have got the security of a three or four-year contract.

It doesn’t help Man Utd or Ten Hag if you are going into a new season with the clock ticking on the manager’s future. You want to avoid any more speculation about his future. If there’s no new deal, United are just kicking the managerial decision down the road.

It’s not good enough for United to have a review and say ‘we’ve explored all eventualities and you’ll do for the time being’. Ten Hag deserves more than that. He needs to be backed fully.

That means giving him a contract and the security of a three or four-year deal and that will send a message out to the fans, to the wider community and to the United squad that Ten Hag is here to stay, he’s the owners’ man and he is the one who calls the shots.

It’s also an important decision for transfers at Man Utd. Players coming in will want to know what’s going on and they will want security that a manager will not just be off after only a few months of the season.

Even with a new contract, how patient will Man Utd be with Ten Hag now?

With his future at Manchester United in doubt, Erik ten Hag was in defiant mood following his side’s FA Cup triumph over rivals Manchester City.

Solhekol: If he gets his new deal, Ten Hag will have no excuses. Because Sir Jim Ratcliffe will say he is now calling the shots in the club’s football operations.

With a new chief executive, a new sporting director and a new technical director, everything is in place for Ten Hag to be successful. No excuses.

Obviously, United still need to work on their training ground and do up Old Trafford as well. But plans are in place to do that.

INEOS are now committed to this project.

Ten Hag has been true to his word. He’s said all along he’s had a good working relationship with INEOS and now we are getting a clear indication that they want to work with him long-term as well.

The only issue has been the way this has been conducted. There will be people who say that if INEOS loved Ten Hag so much, why were they talking to other managers? However, in this day and age, it might not be the right thing to do to speak to other managers in football terms, but it is the right thing to do in business.

INEOS have come in and made a lot of changes already at Man Utd and there will be more, but they think Ten Hag is the right man to coach the team. But I do not think he is as powerful as he was before INEOS arrived.

Ten Hag will be happy that he is keeping his job, but I don’t think it is a massive cause for celebration for him because I’m sure he thinks it should have been dealt with much quicker and that his position wouldn’t have been under so much scrutiny for so long.

A pivotal summer coming up for Ten Hag and Man Utd

Could Manchester United be about to make a move for Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee?

Solhekol: It is a massive summer for Man Utd.

It’s not just about players coming in either. It’s also about players going out the door.

Ten Hag has said he wants another centre-back, he wants another central midfielder and he wants another striker.

There’s also the Jadon Sancho situation which has to be dealt with. You’d think that with Ten Hag staying it makes it much more likely that Sancho will leave Old Trafford, unless there’s some sort of twist and peace talks with everybody making up.

But in terms of transfers, I don’t think Ten Hag will have the sort of control and influence that he previously had because of the new structure that has been put in place at United.

There’s also still a lot of uncertainty around the club with new chief executive Omar Berrada not starting yet, Dan Ashworth is embroiled in a legal dispute with Newcastle United and the transfer window will be open on Friday.

It is good news for United that they have Jason Wilcox in place and, now they know Ten Hag will be the manager, it will help them in the market.

British South Asians in football: Who makes it into the 2023/24 Team of the Season? | Football News

It’s been another breakthrough campaign for British South Asians in football but who makes it into the 2023/24 Team of the Season?

Players from the community featured at every level of the English women’s football pyramid and across every division in the men’s game except for the Premier League.

Six players retain their places from last year, but how does the 2023/24 squad shape up?

Sky Sports journalist and FA Level 2 scout Dev Trehan sat down with Desi Ballers founder Zohaib Rashid to pick the second annual South Asians in Football Team of the Season.

Goalkeeper

Jaz Singh enjoyed the best campaign of his career after a record-breaking season where he helped Tamworth go up to the National League as champions with their second successive promotion.

Jaz Singh thanked his team-mates live on Sky Sports News after breaking a Tamworth club record and going a remarkable 15 hours without conceding a goal.

Singh kept an astonishing 25 clean sheets and at one stage went more than 15 hours (905 minutes) without conceding a goal – the most minutes played by a goalkeeper without conceding a goal in 91 years of Tamworth club history.

More from South Asians In Football

Defenders

Asmita Ale had another productive season where she featured for both Tottenham and Leicester City in the Women’s Super League.

Ale, who is the first Nepali-heritage player to sign a professional contract in English football, played in Leicester’s Women’s FA Cup victory against Birmingham City, before featuring in the quarter-final win against Liverpool to help The Foxes reach the last four for the first time in their history.

Pakistan skipper Easah Suliman captains the 2023/24 South Asians in Football Team of the Season after a solid campaign in the Azerbaijan Premier League for Sumgayit FK.

The Birmingham-born centre-back scored four goals for his club and made nine appearances at international level – including captaining his country in the away leg of their first-ever World Cup qualifying win, which came against Cambodia last October.

Former Leicester youngster Simranjit Singh Thandi reflected on his move to Cyprus where he made his debut in senior football in a 4-0 Europa League qualifying win against Levski Sofia.

Simranjit Singh Thandi emerged as a real defensive stalwart for Doxa Katokopias since joining the Cypriot top-division side in January for the second half of the 2023/24 season.

Thandi started 16 of the 18 matches he featured in, playing across the back line in a season where he reached a century of senior career appearances.

Mal Benning played some of the best football of his career in 2024 after joining Shrewsbury Town, a year on from his play-off final heroics with Port Vale.

Benning, who recently penned a two-year contract extension, was recognised with back-to-back Player of the Month awards in January and February, with the full-back also landing Shrewsbury Town Foundation’s Community Player of the Season award.

Midifielders

Hamza Choudhury enjoyed a magnificent campaign after returning to Leicester and signing a new contract following a successful loan at Watford the previous season.

Hamza Choudhury signed a new contract last summer and opened up to LCFC TV about his journey at the club and his desire to get Leicester City back in the Premier League.

The British-Bangladeshi midfielder featured in 33 matches last term, captaining the side on several occasions and often playing as an inverted right-back, as Leicester City won the title to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

Millie Chandarana was ever-present in the best season of her career to date. The midfielder helped Blackburn Rovers break a host of club records in the FA Women’s Championship, including going on their longest unbeaten run and achieving their highest-ever points haul.

Chandarana’s jaw-dropping strike against Charlton Athletic also saw her land her team’s Goal of the Season award for the second year in a row.

Zidane Iqbal traded Manchester United for Dutch Eredivisie side FC Utrecht last summer, and the Pakistani-heritage midfielder enjoyed a breakout season in his first full campaign in senior football.

Iqbal impressed away at Feyenoord, managed last term by new Liverpool boss Arne Slot, making 29 appearances for club and country over the course of the season, including scoring his first international goal for Iraq.

Attackers

Erik ten Hag to stay as Manchester United manager and is in talks to extend contract | Football News

Erik ten Hag to stay as Manchester United manager and is in talks to extend contract | Football News

Erik ten Hag will stay on as Manchester United manager.

United and Ten Hag are said to be aligned after the club’s end-of-season review, a process which lasted longer than two weeks and saw other managers sounded out for the role.

However, it is understood the conclusion from the review was that Ten Hag should remain in charge and negotiations have begun over a new contract for the manager.

Ten Hag’s current contract ends at the end of next season, with the club having the option of extending it by a further 12 months.

United finished a disappointing eighth, their worst finish in the Premier League era, but beat rivals Manchester City to lift the FA Cup – Ten Hag’s second trophy in as many years.

Ten Hag had to contend with an injury ravaged squad throughout the season but managed to salvage Europa League qualification with the victory over City at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel, Thomas Frank, Kieran McKenna and Gareth Southgate were all linked with taking over at Old Trafford but the club have now committed to Ten Hag.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS has taken control of the club’s footballing operations since becoming a minority shareholder in February and has overseen major staff changes.

Jason Wilcox has begun work as technical director while Omar Berrada will start as the new chief executive this summer, but Ten Hag will continue in his role with a year left on his contract.

‘Man Utd spoke to other managers – but Ten Hag could now receive new deal’

Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth:

“Remember, he did maintain through all of his talks with Sir Jim Ratcliffe that he believed he would be the man to lead Manchester United forward, that he was under contract until next summer at least and he had no reason to believe he wasn’t going to be the manager.

“Manchester United have been conducting their post-season review after that FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.

“After that review of the last season and first-team operations, the club and Erik ten Hag held constructive discussions about what happened over the past season and what could happen in the future.

“Manchester United considered all eventualities. They did speak to other managers and representatives of other managers – Thomas Tuchel, Kieran McKenna and Mauricio Pochettino. But the conclusion after that review and all of those talks was that Ten Hag would remain as manager.

“The club and Ten Hag are believed to be aligned and have now entered negotiations over a contract extension. This is really significant. He’s got one year left on his contract.”

Benjamin Sesko: Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd-linked striker expected to commit future to RB Leipzig | Football News

Benjamin Sesko is expected to sign a new contract with RB Leipzig this week, Sky Sports News understands.

The Slovenian striker has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Sesko was said to have a release clause in his deal that would have made him available for £55m until the end of June.

However, he will sign an improved deal with the German club ahead of the Euros. His Slovenia side will face England, Denmark and Serbia at Euro 2024.

The 21-year-old forward scored 18 goals in all competitions for Leipzig last season, including goals in each of the last seven Bundesliga matches of the campaign.

Sesko off the table – who will PL clubs turn to next?

Arsenal and Manchester United are still monitoring Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee amid strong interest from AC Milan.

Both clubs are understood to be keeping a close eye on developments with the striker, who is among a number of attacking options Arsenal and United are looking at this summer

Sky in Italy are reporting Milan are still pushing to sign the 23-year-old after flying to London late last week for talks. Nothing was agreed but they remain in contact with his representatives.

Zirkzee has a £34m (€40m) release clause in his contract, which has two years left to run.

Chelsea also hoping to strengthen up front, which could see the three Premier League clubs go head-to-head in a market thin on the ground for top-class targets available at an achievable price.

Arsenal want to bring in a young striker they can develop, having turned their attention away from players such as Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

Isak, who Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has said is off limits, would be extremely expensive, with reports suggesting a fee of £90m was a laughable proposition.

Toney, 28, would likely come cheaper as he has one year left on his deal.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has expressed his desire to one day play in the Premier League and could be available this summer, but his release clause stands at around £100m.

Former Coventry striker Viktor Gyokeres has also been linked with a return to England this summer after his prolific first season in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon, scoring 29 goals in 33 league appearances.

Sky Sports News reported that Man Utd had been monitoring Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy around the winter transfer window. He finished the Bundesliga season with 28 goals in 28 games.

What does each Premier League team need this season?

What does every Premier League team need in the summer transfer window? Sky Sports statistician Paul Harrison dives into the data to find out…

Arsenal

Few flaws can be found in a team who have finished runners-up to Manchester City in successive seasons. However, not a single Arsenal player has surpassed 16 Premier League goals in four campaigns.

This season, Kai Havertz’s return of nine goals in his final 14 league appearances this season was promising, but Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus failed to reach double figures between them from a combined 54 league appearances, with neither finding the net after January.

Chelsea

Chelsea showed signs of progress in the final three months – losing only one of their final 15 league games – but their young squad would benefit from an injection of experience if the top four is a realistic aim.

Thiago Silva, now 39 years of age, will follow Mauricio Pochettino out of the club once his contract expires at the end of June.

The Blues had the youngest average starting XI in the division this season – despite the Brazilian starting 27 games. Replacing him will be key: they conceded eight more goals than any previous Premier League campaign.

Man Utd

With Erik ten Hag’s future still in the balance, Manchester United’s inevitable summer of upheaval could see additions in all areas of the pitch – they have struggled both defensively and offensively.

The departure of the experienced Raphael Varane will leave the club light at the back, especially with Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw’s ongoing injury concerns.

They used 14 different centre-back partnerships this season and veteran Jonny Evans clocked more league appearances than any other centre-back at the club. So, a keen eye will be cast over a defence that conceded a Premier League club-record 58 goals this term.

When does the summer transfer window open and close?

The 2024 summer transfer window in the Premier League officially opens on Friday June 14 – the same day that Euro 2024 starts.

The window will close on August 30 at 11pm UK time in England and at midnight in Scotland.

The Premier League has brought forward Deadline Day to link up with the other major leagues in Europe. The closing dates were set following discussions with the leagues in England, Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

Tottenham

Another false dawn at Tottenham, who were top of the table and unbeaten after 10 Premier League games under Ange Postecoglou.

Their capitulation in the 4-1 home defeat against Chelsea in November became the norm as the season progressed. Their defensive stats in the final 28 games resembled a team in a relegation battle.

Better midfield protection and competent defensive depth are required if they are to stand any chance of fighting for a top-four finish next term.

Erik ten Hag: Decision on Manchester United boss expected this week with Thomas Tuchel out of running | Football News

Manchester United are expected to make a decision on the future of manager Erik ten Hag this week with Thomas Tuchel out of the running to replace him.

Ten Hag has returned from holiday but is yet to find out whether he will be in charge for a third season at Old Trafford with the club’s post-season review still ongoing.

Former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Tuchel held talks with United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in France last week but is no longer under consideration for the job should United decide to make a change.

Ten Hag will not be replaced by Tuchel but is still not sure if he will remain Man Utd boss next season

As far as Ten Hag is concerned, he is still the United manager and has one year left on his contract, but the longer the review goes on the more potentially concerning it becomes for him.

The 54-year-old led United to FA Cup glory last month to secure his second major trophy in as many seasons, but an eighth-place finish in the Premier League and a dismal European campaign has cast doubt on his position.

While he is aware of reports the club have been in contact with other managers, Ten Hag has always wanted to stay but is realistic when it comes to expectations about his future.

Sky Sports News reported in May that Gareth Southgate was sounded out about the possibility of becoming United manager one day – but he had no interest in engaging in any conversation that was not about his job as England boss.

Southgate is on good terms with INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford and he worked closely at the FA with incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth.

It has been reported by other media outlets that United have also been monitoring ex-Chelsea and Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Graham Potter.

Why is Tuchel out of the running?

Sky Sports News chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol:

“We know who won’t be in charge of Manchester United next season and that’s Thomas Tuchel. Depending on who you believe, there are different versions about why he won’t be replacing Erik ten Hag as United manager if Ten Hag leaves Old Trafford.

“According to Tuchel’s camp, he wants to take a little break away from football and wants to put his feet up for a while – that is why he doesn’t want the United job.

“From Manchester United’s point of view, the narrative would be that they don’t want to make Tuchel their next manager and if they decide to replace Ten Hag, they will look for someone else.

Erik Ten Hag, Sir Jim Ratcliffe

“Speaking of Ten Hag, it’s been a very difficult time for him since he won the FA Cup a couple of weeks ago. He’s been on holiday but in the back of his mind, hanging over him, has been this issue of whether he’s still going to be the Manchester United manager or not.

“United have been holding this post-season review and we’re expecting some sort of clarity this week on his future.

“You would hope Ten Hag would be the first person to know. He’s back from his holiday and you would imagine United will hold face-to-face talks soon.”
