Archie Vaughan: Michael Vaughan’s son earns first England U19s call-up for Sri Lanka two-Test series | Cricket News

Archie Vaughan has been named in the England U19 squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka.

The son of former England captain Michael Vaughan, who plays county cricket for Somerset, impressed last month in action for the Young Lions Invitational XI against the U19s.

On that occasion, the 18-year-old batter was on the opposite team to Rocky Flintoff, son of his father’s former England team-mate Andrew Flintoff, and cracked 85 from 83 balls.

However, Flintoff’s 106 helped England to a two-wicket win in the 50-over contest after the Young Lions were dismissed for 288.

Vaughan and Flintoff, who recently signed contracts with Somerset and Lancashire respectively, are among 14 players vying to be involved in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Wormsley next week.

Also included in the squad are Farhan Ahmed, the brother of current England spinner Rehan Ahmed, and former England international Joe Denly’s nephew Jaydn Denly.

The side is captained for the first time by Warwickshire’s Hamza Shaikh, who has skippered his county’s Second XI and is a part of the FCC Select XI which plays the West Indies in a three-day warm-up match at Beckenham ahead of their Test series against England’s senior men’s team.

Bronny James: LA Lakers draft LeBron James’ son as NBA history beckons | NBA News

Bronny James: LA Lakers draft LeBron James’ son as NBA history beckons | NBA News

LeBron James moved a step closer to fulfilling his dream of playing alongside one of his sons after the LA Lakers selected 19-year-old Bronny in the NBA Draft on Thursday.

After going undrafted in the first round on Wednesday, the oldest son of the four-time NBA MVP was selected 55th overall by the Lakers towards the end of the second round of the 2024 draft.

The Lakers’ selection creates the first father-son duo in NBA history.

Bronny, a guard, played 25 games in college at Southern California after suffering cardiac arrest during a summer workout last July.

He was seen as a fringe second-round pick and was expected to join his future Hall of Fame father in Los Angeles, having had private workouts with only the Lakers and the Phoenix Suns before the draft.

LeBron worked out with Bronny earlier on Wednesday before they watched the first round of the draft, which consisted of 30 total picks. The Lakers also drafted Tennessee All-American Dalton Knecht with the 17th overall pick.

In a statement, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said: “In the history of the NBA, there’s never been a father and a son that have shared an NBA basketball court and that feels like something that could be magical.”

The Lakers are waiting for LeBron to decide his plans for next season. The deadline to exercise his player option with the Lakers is Saturday, with James expected to opt out of the deal and enter free agency before signing a short-term deal for his 22nd season in the NBA.

Pelinka added: “We know, and have to respect of course, that LeBron has a decision on his opt-out … but if it worked out that he was on our team next season, NBA history could be made. And NBA history should be made in a Lakers uniform.”

Lakers superstars endorsed the selection of Bronny. “He’s very good defensively,” said Anthony Davis. “He can read the floor very well. I think he’s a really good playmaker.

“I saw him work out a couple times. His reads, reading the defence, making the right passes, that was really impressive to me. I think he’s going to be fine. Obviously, it’s a lot of pressure on him with his dad being who he is.”

There were questions about Bronny James’ readiness for the NBA after his cardiac episode and ensuing unspectacular season at USC. He averaged 4.8 points per game in 2023-24. His medical matter, modest production and height – under six foot two – all complicate his draft grade.

Bronny James says he doesn’t think about playing with his dad LeBron James too much, once he gets drafted and wants to write his own ‘narrative’ in the NBA

But he shot very well in combine drills and posted a 40.5-inch vertical, indications there’s more than genetics to his skill set.

Represented by Klutch Sports and Rich Paul like his father, the agency made clear prior to the draft that Bronny James and LeBron James are not planning to be a package deal.

Andrew Flintoff’s son Rocky Flintoff fires match-winning century in England Under-19s warm-up | Cricket News

Rocky Flintoff hit a match-winning 106 as England Under-19s chased down 288 to beat a Young Lions Invitational XI by two wickets at Loughborough.

The 16-year-old son of former England all-rounder Andrew hit eight fours and three sixes in a 111-ball innings which steered his side to victory after they lost both openers in the first five overs.

Flintoff and Charlie Allison put on 81 for the fifth wicket as they eased the Under-19s back into a game which was rapidly slipping away from them.

They had come together at 52-4 in the 12th over and the partnership remained intact until Allison was caught by Travis Holland off the bowling of Archie Vaughan, the 18-year-old son of former England captain Michael, for 56 with the score on 133-5.

When Flintoff was finally caught by James Dunn, England needed only 14 more runs to win and Harry Moore, who finished on an unbeaten 45, and Tazeem Ali duly obliged to see them over the line.

Earlier, Vaughan had top-scored for the Lions with 85 from 83 balls, including 10 fours and a six.

Batting at four, he arrived at the wicket to join Kesh Fonseka, who made 54, with the score on 102-2 and departed at 281-9 as his side were dismissed for 288 with 11 balls to spare.

Flintoff’s latest century adds to an impressive start to the campaign, where he followed a solid half-century for Lancashire’s 2nd XI against Durham by making a maiden century with a 116 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

He is part of England’s U19s for their three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, starting in Chelmsford on Friday before further matches at Hove on July 1 and July 3. A two-match youth Test series then begins at Wormsley from July 8, with the other taking place at Cheltenham from July 16.

Andrew Flintoff is currently part of the coaching set-up for England’s T20 World Cup campaign, where they face India in the semi-finals. Watch live on Thursday from 3pm on Sky Sports Cricket (first ball 3.30pm).

Heung-Min Son: Rodrigo Bentancur made a mistake, but we are past it and united | Football News

Heung-Min Son: Rodrigo Bentancur made a mistake, but we are past it and united | Football News

Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-Min Son says his team-mate Rodrigo Bentancur “made a mistake” when using a racial slur about him, but the pair are now “past this and united”.

The Uruguay international had been asked by the host of TV show Canal 10 in his homeland for a Tottenham player’s shirt, to which he replied: “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”

After the clip, which had been circulated on social media, drew criticism, Bentancur swiftly apologised to the South Korea international, writing on Instagram: “Sonny brother. I apologise to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke.

“You know I love you and I would never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else! I love you, brother!”

Despite Bentancur’s apology, however, discrimination charity Kick It Out said a “significant number” of reports had been received by the organisation.

A statement from the charity read: “Kick It Out has received a significant number of reports about Rodrigo Bentancur’s comments regarding his Tottenham team-mate Heung-Min Son. These reports have already been sent to the club and relevant authorities.

“We recognise Bentancur has acknowledged the offence caused, however it highlights a wider issue that heavily affects East Asian and wider communities.

“We will be seeking to address these broader issues in the coming season.”

Tottenham have since released their own statement, saying: “Following a comment from Rodrigo Bentancur in an interview video clip and the player’s subsequent public apology, the club has been providing assistance in ensuring a positive outcome on the matter. This will include further education for all players in line with our diversity, equality and inclusion objectives.

“We fully support that our captain Sonny feels that he can draw a line under the incident and that the team can focus on the new season ahead.

“We are extremely proud of our diverse, global fanbase and playing squads. Discrimination of any kind has no place at our club, within our game or within wider society.”

The two players have been team-mates since Bentancur joined the north London club from Juventus in January 2022.

Bentancur is currently preparing to represent his country at this summer’s Copa America in the United States, which starts on June 20.

Tiger Woods ready to challenge for US Open victory and praises support of son Charlie to prepare for Pinehurst | Golf News

Tiger Woods ready to challenge for US Open victory and praises support of son Charlie to prepare for Pinehurst | Golf News

Tiger Woods insists he is ready to challenge for major victory at the US Open and has praised the impact his son Charlie has had on his preparation for Pinehurst No 2.

The 15-time major champion made a record 23rd consecutive cut at The Masters earlier this year before finishing last of those who made it through to the weekend, then missed the cut at the PGA Championship last month.

Woods has played a limited schedule due to injury in recent years but was given a special exemption to feature by the USGA, having failed to qualify automatically for the first time in his professional career, with the former world No 1 confident that his body can handle the latest major test.

When asked whether he felt physically ready to contend this week, live from Thursday on Sky Sports, Woods told reporters: “Yeah, I do. I feel like I have the strength to be able to do it. It’s just a matter of doing it.

“This golf course is going to test every single aspect of your game, especially mentally. The mental discipline that it takes to play this particular golf course, it’s going to take a lot. We’ve been working on that and making sure that I understand the game plan.”

Woods: I trust my son with my swing

Woods described the condition of this week’s venue – where he finished third in Payne Stewart’s 1999 success and runner-up to Michael Campbell in 2005 – as a “great war of attrition”, although the course is less undulating than ones he has faced at Augusta National and Valhalla in the first two majors of the year.

The 48-year-old had his son Charlie on the practice range with him ahead of his final round of The Masters in April, where he chatted with his father during the warm-up and helped him work on drills, with the teenager back to support his dad for this week’s practice rounds.

Former PGA Tour winner Notah Begay III discusses Woods’ chances of winning his fourth US Open Title at Pinehurst and says this could be his best chance to win his 16th major this year

“I think having Charlie out here is very special,” said Woods. “As far as his responsibilities, it’s the same. I trust him with my swing and my game. He’s seen it more than anybody else in the world. He’s seen me hit more golf balls than anyone.

“I tell him what to look for, especially with putting. He gave me a couple little side bits today, which was great, because I get so entrenched in hitting certain putts to certain pins, I tend to forget some of the things I’m working on.

“I just want to see the balls rolling. He reminds me every now and again, which is great. We have a great relationship and rapport like that, and it’s a wonderful experience for both of us.”

Woods: ‘Light at the end of the tunnel’ to unify men’s golf?

The three-time US Open champion was involved in an in-person meeting with PGA Tour subcommittee members and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan last week, as talks continue to unify the men’s game.

An initial “framework agreement” between the PIF – which bankrolls the LIV Golf league – the PGA Tour and DP World Tour was announced last June with an initial December deadline, which has been extended, with no date publicly confirmed on when – or if – a deal can be finalised.

“It was productive,” Woods said about the meeting. “Is there light at the end of tunnel? I think we’re closer to that point than we were pre-meeting. We discussed a lot of different endings and how we get there.

“I think that both sides walked away from the meeting, we all felt very positive. As I said, both sides were looking at different ways to get to the end game. Both sides shared a deep passion for how we need to get there. And yes, there are going to be differences of opinion, but we all want the same thing.”

Andrew Flintoff’s son Rocky Flintoff in England U19s squad for series vs Sri Lanka | Cricket News

Andrew Flintoff’s son, Rocky Flintoff, has been named in the England U19s ODI squad for the first time for their series against Sri Lanka this summer.

The 16-year-old has impressed recently playing for the Lancashire’s 2nd XI, making a maiden century against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, finishing with a total of 116 runs.

The strong knock against Warwickshire came after a solid half-century against Durham in just his second game for the side, for whom he has played for just three times.

Rocky made his debut for Lancashire’s 2nd XI against Yorkshire earlier this year just after his 16th birthday and has batted alongside his older brother Corey in their line-up.

Luc Benkenstein, son of Lancashire head coach Dale Benkenstein, will captain the England U19s during the series.

England Men U19s coach Mike Yardy said: “We have selected an exciting squad for the series, with a blend of some players who are currently playing in the Vitality Blast and some younger players for whom it will be their first time in an U19s squad.

“As always, it’s a great opportunity for the players to perform in an England U19 shirt and to experience international cricket.”

Andrew Flintoff is currently part of the coaching set up for England’s T20 World Cup campaign, which continues on Thursday June 13 when they take on Oman from 7.30pm, live on Sky Sports.
