US Women’s Open: Yuka Saso shoots final-round 68 to win tournament for second time | Golf News

Japan’s Yuka Saso shot a final-round 68 to win the US Women’s Open for the second time.

Saso, who also won the title in 2021, finished four-under for the week, three shots clear of compatriot Hinako Shibuno following a final round that included five birdies and two bogeys.

They were the only two players under par, the fewest for the Women’s Open in 10 years.

America’s Andrea Lee had held the overnight lead at five under alongside Australia’s Minjee Lee and Thailand’s Wichanee Meechai, but ultimately finished in a tie for third at even par along with Ally Ewing.

Minjee Lee, a two-time major champion, led by three shots on the front nine but her challenge fell apart when putting her tee shot into the water on the par-three 12th for the first of two double bogeys in the space of three holes on her way to a 78.

Meechai, meanwhile, fell out of contention early on when carding a triple-bogey six on the par-three sixth. She’d shoot 77 to finish two over.

Even in victory, Saso wasn’t immune from mistakes. Her chances took a massive blow with a four-putt at the sixth for a double bogey.

However, she’d steady the ship with five-straight pars before making birdies on the 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th to seal victory.

Saso has said she wishes she could play for two flags – her mother is from the Philippines and her father from Japan. She decided to switch citizenship before turning 21.

“It feels great,” Saso said. “Winning in 2021 I represented the Philippines and feel like I was able to give back to my mum. This year I was able to represent Japan, and I think I was able to give back to my dad.

“It’s just a wonderful feeling that I was able to give back to my parents in the same way.

“I think I really wanted it, as well. Not just to get a second win but also to prove something to myself. I haven’t won in two and a half or three years.

“I definitely had a little doubt if I can win again or if I won’t win again but I was able to prove a little something to myself.”

Scotland Euro 2024 squad: Steve Clarke considering options after injury to striker Lyndon Dykes | Football News

Scotland Euro 2024 squad: Steve Clarke considering options after injury to striker Lyndon Dykes | Football News

Scotland manager Steve Clarke is considering “all options” after losing “pivotal” striker Lyndon Dykes to injury.

Dykes was carried off on a stretcher during training on Friday and has since been ruled out for Euro 2024 with less than two weeks before Scotland open the tournament against hosts Germany on June 14.

The QPR striker has scored nine goals across 36 internationals and has often been the focal point of Clarke’s attack.

The setback leaves Scotland with only Che Adams and Lawrence Shankland as recognised centre-forwards in their 27-player squad, which needs to be cut to 26 after their final warm-up game against Finland on Friday night.

Speaking at his pre-match media conference in Portugal ahead of Monday’s friendly against Gibraltar, Clarke said: “I’ve given myself two or three days just to think about it.

“There is no like-for-like replacement for Lyndon because he brings his own qualities. I don’t really believe in like for like. Lyndon brings his qualities, obviously we haven’t got them.

“I will have a little look at what’s around, I will decide what to do with the squad and we will go from there.”

When asked whether he would call up another striker, Clarke said: “That’s why I am thinking about it.”

‘Dykes has been a pivotal player’

Dykes played in all eight of Scotland’s qualifiers, starting five of them, and scoring once.

“We are all really disappointed for Lyndon,” added Clarke. “The boys that got injured earlier get a little bit more time to get over it. Lyndon’s is right at the last minute before we go to the tournament.

“And he’s been a good player for us, a pivotal player. One of the best telephone conversations I ever had was when I phoned him up and gave him the option to come and play for Scotland rather than Australia. Thankfully he chose us.

“That was four years ago and I think the path the national team has been on since then has been mainly an upward trend.

“[I’m] grateful for what he has done up until now, sad that he misses this tournament, but I look forward to working with him again in the future.

“It was an ankle injury. No contact, just the way he landed, the way he fell on it. It happens, unfortunately. Earlier in the session, Lyndon made a similar movement and nothing happened. It’s just the way it is.

“You have to be quite resilient as a coach, a manager and a player and realise things move forward, and that’s what we have done.”

Image:

Clarke previously hinted he would look to the Scotland U21 squad if any late call-ups were needed.

That could put Tommy Conway in pole position given the Bristol City forward is with Scot Gemmill’s group ahead of a friendly in Turkey on Monday. The 21-year-old netted 12 goals for the Sky Bet Championship side last season.

Liverpool winger Ben Doak has played in a central attacking role for Scotland Under-21s but the 18-year-old’s club campaign was ended by a knee injury in December and he is still getting back up to speed.

Clarke is mulling over other scenarios as well.

“Possibly, but not necessarily, that’s what I would do,” he said. “It’s something that we think about all the time.

“We like to have a connection with the Scottish young team. I like to show there is a pathway to the A squad from the U21s.

“But obviously you have got to consider all options and that’s what I will do.”

Image:
Scott McTominay won’t play for Scotland against Gibraltar

Meanwhile, Stuart Armstrong, Scott McTominay and John Souttar won’t feature for Scotland on Monday night.

Manchester United midfielder McTominay came off just 25 minutes after coming on as a substitute in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City last weekend.

Southampton’s Armstrong has not played since being stretched off last month while centre-back Souttar missed Rangers’ final three games of the season.

Boss Clarke said: “Stuart Armstrong, Scott McTominay and John Souttar won’t play this game but I am pretty confident they will all be good for the next game.

“For me it’s a chance to get some minutes on the pitch for some players, maybe a slightly unfamiliar line-up in terms of people starting the game.

“We’ve still got one or two people coming back from a longer-term injury so we are careful to manage minutes.

“It’s a little bit of a balancing act to make sure we get a good performance and a good result.

“Some of them maybe didn’t get the minutes they wanted towards the end of the club season so hopefully we can give them some that get them up to speed for the tournament itself.”

Greg Taylor and Scott McKenna have joined the squad after additional time off.

UFC 302: Dustin Poirier contemplates retirement after defeat to Islam Makhachev in New Jersey | WWE News

UFC 302: Dustin Poirier contemplates retirement after defeat to Islam Makhachev in New Jersey | WWE News

MMA legend Dustin Poirier is considering retirement after pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev retained his UFC lightweight title at UFC 302 in New Jersey.

The Russian won his 14th straight fight under the UFC banner with a D’arce choke in the third minute of the fifth round to consign Poirier to his third defeat when challenging for a belt.

With former US President Donald Trump among the crowd, Makhachev landed 88 significant strikes – 147 in total – and five takedowns en route to victory.

Poirier, 35, believes that this may have been his final chance at winning the belt and the popular fighter – who was briefly put to sleep after tapping in the fifth and final round at Prudential Center in Newark – is now considering hanging up his gloves.

“If I do fight again, what am I fighting for? Just to fight? I’ve done that 50 times,” said Poirier.

“I’ve got a little girl, I’m 35 years old, this might be it. I think this might be it.”

Makhachev, meanwhile, believes it is time he was afforded the chance to become a double-world champion by moving up to welterweight.

“It’s my dream. I want to fight for the second belt. I want to feel that energy again, I need a new one,” said the UFC lightweight champion.

Earlier, ex-UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland secured a split decision win over ex-title challenger Paulo Costa.

The 33-year-old American retained number one spot in the middleweight rankings by bouncing back from his title-losing decision match-up against Dricus du Plessis.

Kevin Holland took just one minute 34 seconds to win his middleweight bout with Michal Oleksiejczuk by submission.

Also on the main card, Niko Price and Randy Brown each claimed unanimous decision wins in the welterweight category, beating Alex Morono and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos respectively.

USA Women 4 – 0 Korea Republic Women

USA Women 4 – 0 Korea Republic Women

Emma Hayes made a successful debut as the US women’s national team head coach as Mallory Swanson and Tierna Davidson both scored twice in a 4-0 friendly win over South Korea at DSG Park in Denver on Saturday.

The US team steadily found its rhythm, with Swanson and Davidson breaking through in the first half and again in the second period.

At times, Hayes paced along the touchline as she looked on. She clapped the goals and near-misses. Sometimes, she retreated over to the bench to chat with assistant coach Twila Kilgore.

The 47-year-old Hayes was brought on board in November, but joined the team this week in Colorado after completing the Women’s Super League season with Chelsea. She is trying to quickly get to know her squad before picking a team for the Paris Olympic Games this summer.

Hayes’s mission is simple: Restore the dominance of a US team that is coming off a disappointing finish in last year’s Women’s World Cup. The early exit led to coach Vlatko Andonovski resigning.

A capacity crowd was in attendance at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park to cheer on a lineup with an average age of 25.5 years, the youngest starting XI for the USWNT in more than two years. One fan brought a sign that read, “In Emma We Trust.”

Captain Lindsey Horan nearly got the hosts off the mark midway through the first half, but the flag went up for offside just before her shot went in.

You can see we’re building something. There’s lots of work to do. There’s lots of holes in our play, no question, but it was a good start.

US head coach Emma Hayes

It was a sign, though, the team was starting to get on the same page.

Swanson opened the scoring in the 34th minute courtesy of a one-two with fellow Coloradan Sophia Smith.

In the 38th minute, Davidson doubled their lead and the defender scored again early in the second half, before Swanson added another in the 74th minute.

“You can see we’re building something,” Hayes told ESPN after the game. “There’s lots of work to do. There’s lots of holes in our play, no question, but it was a good start.

“I get to enjoy these amazing players. I just feel re-energized and I want to coach this group and they want to be coached.

“In terms of what I had asked from the group, what we prepared for, the execution of that, we’ve made steps in the right direction.

“I felt for the first 30 minutes, it was technical execution where we struggled. We scored in our first three chances, so we were efficient, we were clinical.”

The two teams will meet again in a friendly in Minnesota on Tuesday.

Today on Sky Sports Racing: The French Derby headlined by Ghostwriter and Diego Velazquez | Racing News

3.05 Chantilly – G1 French Derby headlined by Ghostwriter and Diego Velazquez

Classy pair Ghostwriter and Diego Velazquez headline the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club contenders (3.05).

Clive Cox’s Ghostwriter was very progressive as a two-year-old winning all three starts last season. He also looked encouraging in his fourth in the 2000 Guineas last month. This son of Invincible Spirit will be fancied to improve stepping up in trip from a handy draw.

Diego Velazquez represents Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore. He won his first two starts last season but he disappointed when down the field in the Group 1 Futurity at Doncaster. This Frankel offspring however made an encouraging reappearance when fourth in the French 2000 Guineas.

Henri-Alexis Pantall’s First Tracker bids to defend his unbeaten record as he sports the Wathnan silks for the first time under new jockey James Doyle.

2.20 Chantilly – Gr2 Grand Prix de Chantilly feature Dubai Honour and Al Qareem

British raiders Dubai Honour and Al Qareem clash in the Grand Prix de Chantilly (2.20).

Dubai Honour has been a super servant for the William Haggas team travelling all over the globe and he looks to have strong claims as he drops down in class having finished down the field in Hong Kong on his last outing, Tom Marquand rides.

Karl Burke’s Al Qareem ran out a winner in this grade at ParisLongchamp back in 2022 and he will need to step forward from his recent efforts at Newbury and York.

Andre Fabre fields three runners with Hong Kong Vase winner Junko looking the pick of his trio, however the supplemented Marquisat is not to be underestimated under Mickael Barzalona.

1.40 Chantilly – Gr2 Prix du Gros-Chene sees Albasheer represent Doyle and Watson

Archie Watson and Hollie Doyle team up with Albasheer in the Group 2 Prix du Gros-Chene (1.40).

Albasheer has enjoyed a successful campaign, winning two of his three starts this year. He needs to put a career-best effort here in this stronger heat.

Ponntos is seeking a hat-trick here after scoring at San Siro and ParisLongchamp on his last two starts but it could be a tough nut to crack under Mickael Barzalona.

Vicious Harry is a solid Listed performer but would need a lot to reverse the form with Ponntos.

Everton ‘assessing options’ after 777 Partners’ takeover falls through | Football News

Everton ‘assessing options’ after 777 Partners’ takeover falls through | Football News

Everton are assessing “all options for the club’s future ownership” after 777 Partners’ proposed takeover fell through.

Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri was tied into a period of exclusivity with the troubled US investment group until May 31 and could not enter into alternative discussions.

But the 777 Partners’ purchase agreement with Blue Heaven Holdings Limited for the sale and purchase of the majority shareholding in the club has now expired.

A club statement read: “The agreement between 777 Partners and Blue Heaven Holdings Limited for the sale and purchase of the majority shareholding in the club expired today.

“The club’s board of directors recognises the considerable level of financial support 777 Partners has provided the club over recent months and would like to take this opportunity to thank them for this.

“The club will continue to operate as usual, while it works with Blue Heaven Holdings to assess all options for the club’s future ownership.

“The board of directors would like to thank everyone connected to Everton for their patience over recent months and reiterate its commitment to providing further updates when it is appropriate to do so through the club’s official communication channels.”

Moshiri confirmed last week to Everton’s Fan Advisory Board that he had received unsolicited approaches from interested parties, with American businessman John Textor reportedly selling his 40 per cent stake in Crystal Palace with a view to buying the Toffees.

Asked if he had held talks about buying Everton, Textor told The Athletic: “Yes. With the existing constituents – different groups, different lenders, different equity holders.

“I’ve asked them, ‘Is there a way to solve all this confusion and address everyone’s problems’?

“I’m very open-minded to it but I don’t want to come into a situation where I’m not really welcome.

“I’m watching it but 777 still has a contract. There are people that are close to the club who care a lot about it who are also investing.

“There’s the guy running it who’s still calling the shots. Maybe we’re uniquely positioned to solve a lot of problems for people but we’re just watching it right now because there are other people who already own pieces of that club who also want to figure it out.

Textor, a tech entrepreneur, bought into Palace for £90m in 2021 and his multi-club network Eagle Football also includes French side Lyon, Botafogo in Brazil and RWD Molenbeek in Belgium.

However, the American said his situation at Palace, where he is unable to secure a majority shareholding, meant it was no longer compatible with their longer-term goals and had therefore instructed Raine Group to find a buyer for his stake.

In a statement to the Financial Times, he said: “Crystal Palace is an independent club. An integrated sporting model, such as ours at Eagle, is simply not a perfect fit.”

Dmitry Bivol stops Malik Zinad to stay perfect as Artur Beterbiev undisputed showdown confirmed for October 12 | Boxing News

Dmitry Bivol continued preparations for an eagerly-awaited clash with Artur Beterbiev in style as he delivered a clinical sixth-round stoppage victory over Malik Zinad on Saturday.

Bivol, the WBA and IBO champion, had been due to face unified WBC, WBO and IBF champion Beterbiev for the undisputed light-heavyweight championship before the latter was forced to withdraw from the fight due to injury.

“We are professional boxers, we have to change tactics at any moment and I had enough time to change my preparations for a different fighter to Beterbiev,” said Bivol.

Turki Al-Sheikh, chair of General Authority for Entertainment in Saudi Arabia, took to the ring shortly after Bivol’s victory to confirm that the pair will meet on the rescheduled date of October 12, kicking off Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia later this year.

Bivol extended his perfect record to 23-0 in what marked his first stoppage win since 2018, having arrived on the back of nine successive unanimous decision victories.

“I believe my power was there every time, and I didn’t have any doubts,” added Bivol.

A gulf in class was evident early on as Bivol sent a brave and aggressive Zinad to the canvas with a devastating left hook in the opening round.

Zinad, who falls to 22-1 after the first defeat of his professional career, continued to fight with confidence as he worked on the front foot in the face of the square-on Bivol stance so difficult to decipher.

For every display of sharp hand speed from Zinad was an equally blistering counter from the dominant Bivol, whose consistent accuracy had bloodied the nose of his opponent.

For all of Zinad’s industry, rarely did Bivol look troubled as he sought to bank some valuable rounds in view of Beterbiev down the line.

Finally his supreme timing and power told as he unlocked Zinad with a brutal left jab into a left hook to rock his man, before unleashing a wave of punishment that would force referee Howard Foster to step in and bring the fight to a halt.

Real Madrid were crowned champions of Europe for a 15th time at Wembley, with second-half goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr seeing off a brave Borussia Dortmund for a 2-0 Champions League final victory.

The German side hit a post and created two more clear chances in the first half as they threatened a big upset but Real have a unique relationship with this competition and, with an improved display after the interval, they finally came to life.

Toni Kroos – in his final game for the club – set up the opener with a corner for Carvajal to head home with 16 minutes to play, before England’s Jude Bellingham rolled in Vinicius Jr to punish a stretched Dortmund side soon after.

Niclas Fullkrug, who had struck the inside of an upright earlier in the game when Dortmund were breaking through the Real backline at will, thought he’d created a big finish with a powerful header but was flagged offside and Dortmund’s hopes of an unlikely comeback all but ended there.

Real, the Kings of Europe, were crowned again. The Decimoquinta secured.

For the first time, it is with an unbeaten European campaign. They have needed four comebacks along the way, including their last-gasp turnaround against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals and a penalty shootout victory over last season’s winners Manchester City in the quarter-finals, but the Spanish champions wouldn’t be denied.

For Carvajal, Kroos and team-mates Nacho and Luka Modric it is a remarkable sixth Champions League win with Real Madrid. Boss Carlo Ancelotti has now won the coveted prize five times as a head coach. For 20-year-old Bellingham, the first of more to come?

Bellingham: The best night of my life!

Jude Bellingham speaking to TNT Sports:

“I’ve always dreamt of playing in these games. You go through life with people telling you that you can’t do things. Days like this remind you. It gets hard sometimes and you wonder whether it’s worth it but nights like this make you realise.

“I was alright until I saw my mum and dad. Nights like where they could have been at home by 7 o’clock but they’re out until 12 on trips to take me to football. And my little brother who I’m trying to be a role model for. The best night of my life.”

Real’s remarkable Champions League numbers

  • 15 European Cup/Champions League wins – more than twice as many as next-best AC Milan (seven)
  • 5 Champions League wins for Carlo Ancelotti – more than any other manager
  • 6 Champions League wins with Real Madrid for Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal and Nacho

How Real became champions again

The odds were always stacked against Dortmund. They had beaten them against Atletico Madrid and Paris St-Germain on the way to the final but missed moments in the first half came back to cost them here. Those chances may well have played on their minds as they stood in front of their supporters who had urged them on so loudly throughout.

In the end it was Wembley heartache again, just as in their 2013 final defeat to Bayern Munich. For the departing Marco Reus, who was there 11 years ago, it will have felt familiarly painful.

A series of pitch invaders may have disrupted the start to the match but Dortmund were quickly up to speed, picking passes in behind the Real backline for Julian Brandt to skew beyond the far post and Karim Adeyemi to run the ball too far wide of Thibaut Courtois.

Team news

  • Real Madrid were unchanged from their final La Liga game of the season, with Thibaut Courtois in goal, Toni Kroos starting his final game for the club and Luka Modric among the subs.
  • Marco Reus dropped to the bench for his final game as a Dortmund player, with Julian Brandt stepping into midfield. On-loan Man Utd man Jadon Sancho started on the wing for the German side.

Real couldn’t plug the gaps and Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen, who was celebrating winning the Championship with Burnley this time last year, rolled in Fullkrug to slide a shot against the inside of the post midway through the half.

The big striker was agonisingly close again soon after, this time unable to stretch enough to angle in his header from Adeyemi’s parried shot. The left winger was proving too hot to handle. Jadon Sancho on the other side was enjoying success, too. Even Marcel Sabitzer was able to step forwards from midfield and force Courtois to save as Dortmund finished the half on top.

Real Madrid’s best moment in that first 45 had been a speculative effort from the edge of the box from Vinicius Jr. They finally made Gregor Kobel work through a Kroos free-kick from an angle before Carvajal went close from the follow-up corner. The right-back’s eyes lit up again moments later when his shot at the back post was deflected kindly for the keeper.

Real were finally getting into gear. Courtois had to push away a Fullkrug header but the action was now around the Dortmund goalmouth. Bellingham was inches away from flicking in Vinicius Jr’s lofted cross, with the Brazilian laughing to himself after some trickery won Real a corner. It was the set-piece that brought the breakthrough and Carvajal’s second Champions League goal nine years on from his first. A good time to add to his tally.

Bellingham again went close with a deflected shot from inside the box as Real suddenly oozed confidence. Kobel had to save from Kroos and then Eduardo Camavinga and then Nacho. He couldn’t stop Vinicius Jr’s strike though – a clinical finish to seal it after Bellingham found him in space.

Fullkrug thought he had grabbed his side a lifeline but there was no stopping Real’s procession to the throne once more.
