Euro 2024: UEFA referees’ chief confirms VAR cleared decision to deny Scotland penalty in Hungary defeat | Football News

VAR did check and clear the decision not to award Scotland a penalty in their
decisive Euro 2024 group game against Hungary, UEFA referees’ chief Roberto
Rosetti has said.

Scotland felt they should have been awarded a spot-kick when Stuart Armstrong was challenged by defender Willi Orban, but their appeals were waved away by Argentinian referee Facundo Tello.

Rosetti said on Friday that the VAR had looked at the incident and decided Armstrong had moved towards the defender and drawn contact.

Hungary went on to win the match 1-0, a result which eliminated Scotland from the tournament.

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke said it was “100 per cent” a penalty and questioned the purpose of VAR “if they are not going to come in for something like that”.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke was left questioning the point of VAR after Stuart Armstrong was not given a penalty during their 1-0 defeat to Hungary

Rosetti was asked about the incident at a referees’ briefing on Friday and said: “This was a very, very tough match with a couple of controversial incidents. There was one in the 68th minute where there was a possible penalty, because John McGinn was pulling the opponent’s shirt.

“Then there was the incident at minute 79. The attacker Armstrong was in front of the Hungarian (Orban). If you watch it from the camera behind, there was movement of the attacker towards the Hungarian.

“The VARs are checking everything, the VAR checked this situation. They decided that this was just a physical contact trying to challenge the defender.”

Kris Boyd says he didn’t understand how Scotland were not awarded a penalty kick in their match against Hungary

Rosetti would not be drawn on whether, in his view, the decision was the correct one.

Rosetti did confirm that Tello has been appointed as a fourth official for Saturday’s last-16 match between Switzerland and Italy.

Dean: I’m astounded penalty wasn’t given

Former referee Mike Dean was surprised that Scotland were denied a ‘clear penalty’ following Willi Orban’s challenge on Stuart Armstrong.

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean told Sky Sports News:

“I was a bit surprised if I was being honest, there was a bit of a tangle at the start but it’s a clear foul, a clear knee on the back of the calf.

“I thought the referee was going to give a foul in real time, it just felt like it to everyone watching the game. I was even more surprised the VAR didn’t get involved.

“I think the VAR would have got involved, he’s probably looked at it and the referee’s given some kind of explanation, maybe a tangle of legs or the attacker’s instigated the contact.

“But whatever way you look at it, it’s a clear penalty. They would have looked at it, and the VAR just agreed with the referee – wrongly in my opinion, in everyone’s opinion by the sounds of it.

“Scotland defended well and had chances. If they went 1-0 up, I couldn’t see Hungary scoring a goal with how they defended for the rest of the game.

“It’s just one of those things. I was astounded it wasn’t given. The referee’s probably seen a tangle, but if I was an attacker and I get across a defender and feel contact, you expect a penalty to either be given by the referee, the assistant or by VAR.

“The referees are at that tournament for a reason, they’re the best in Europe or in South America in his case. You’re there to make the big calls, guys have made big calls all competition; this is the first one, apart from Anthony Taylor’s against France on Friday, where we’re talking about the referee and the VAR.”

England captain Jamie George savouring challenge that awaits against ‘one of world’s best’ in New Zealand | Football News

England captain Jamie George believes this summer’s tour of New Zealand will provide priceless experience and examination for Steve Borthwick’s developing side.

England face New Zealand in Dunedin on July 6 before concluding the two-Test series against the All Blacks at Eden Park on July 13 – both live on Sky Sports.

After Saturday’s comprehensive victory in Japan, George is savouring leading England into battle against the three-time World Cup winners.

“We’ve got so much respect for everything New Zealand do for rugby worldwide,” George told TVNZ.

“We want to make sure we are the best team we possibly can be. In order to do that, you have to play against the best teams, and New Zealand are certainly one of those.

“It’s a huge challenge, we know how big that’s going to be.

“I think we’ve set the tone with the performance we had in Japan. Preparations are going really well so far, and the squad are looking good going into this two-match series.”

George and his England team-mates took time out of their schedule to help out at a foodbank in West Auckland run by former All Black great Sir Michael Jones.

The England captain is relishing being back in New Zealand, having been part of the British and Irish Lions tour in 2017, and urged his team-mates to embrace every aspect of the rugby-obsessed nation.

“Rugby is often a religion over here,” George added. “Just how much the Kiwi public love rugby, and the passion they generate is absolutely amazing.

“My message to the team is to soak it in, love it, and enjoy it. This is what rugby is all about, coming on tours like this to hostile places and trying to compete against the best. That is what we’re trying to do.”

Marc Guehi: The rise of England’s ‘absolute gem’ Euro 2024 defender | Football News

Marc Guehi: The rise of England’s ‘absolute gem’ Euro 2024 defender | Football News

When coaches, team-mates and those who know Marc Guehi well are asked about the strengths of the centre-back, it is his composure which is routinely referenced.

So perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise the 23-year-old has performed so well at Euro 2024. One of the Premier League’s most promising young defenders has taken to the tournament stage seamlessly and has been arguably England’s best performer in Germany so far. Certainly one of their most consistent. Amid all the drama he has been a steady, assured presence at the heart of the defence.

Before the Euros, there were serious concerns about the quality of England’s backline and added worry about Harry Maguire – who, for all his critics, is the leader of that defence – being ruled out with injury. But Guehi and his more experienced centre-back partner John Stones, have helped Gareth Southgate’s side post the best defensive figures of any team in the competition so far. It is at the other end of the pitch where Southgate has bigger problems.

It is perhaps typical of Guehi’s character that when he was asked about those defensive stats and his performances he was quick to dismiss the suggestion he has been England’s best player and pay credit to Maguire for his help in helping him settle at international level since his debut in 2022.

But that modesty only masks a determination and drive to Guehi’s personality which has taken him to the top of the game and led different coaches in club and international football to name him captain of their sides.

Marc Guehi pays homage to the England boss Gareth Southgate as he looks ahead to the game against Slovakia

A skipper of the England age groups and a stand-in captain at Crystal Place at 21, Guehi is a player who leads his team-mates by example.

“Straight away I was impressed by how mature he is,” said England U21s boss Lee Carsley when he named him captain. “The way he talks about the game, the way he influences players off the pitch. The example he sets off the pitch as well as on it made it an easy choice.” England seniors boss Gareth Southgate has praised him for never looking rushed.

They are traits that have been there since the start. “When Marc was here he was calm, he was kind, he was intelligent, he worked hard and he was a real team player,” Guehi’s former primary school head teacher Edward Dove told Sky Sports News.

Sky Sports News’ James Cole visits Marc Guehi’s primary school to see where it all began for the England centre-back

That was the young boy Michael Beale got to know well. The former Rangers boss was a leading coach in Chelsea’s academy and took Guehi – a kid from the same south east London estate and primary school as Beale – under his wing.

Beale got to know Guehi’s father, John, a minister, and would even drive Guehi around the M25 to Cobham, where the young defender enthusiastically listened, learnt and developed among an elite group of rising stars.

“He was a really shy boy but came to life on the pitch,” Beale tells Sky Sports. “He was a hugely well-mannered young man. I can’t think of too many stories of mischief!

“His discipline has been driven by the family but even when he was very young compared to the other boys he was always very focused, working hard in every session. He never missed a session that I can remember.”

That attitude was coupled with a hunger to defend.

Image:
Marc Guehi has shown a hunger to defend from a young age

“He was always a defender,” remembers Beale. “He was like a rash on the forwards, aggressive in the tackle. He liked to keep his game very simple and then pass it to the midfielders or into the forwards quite quickly and he hasn’t changed from that.

“You see how aggressive he is ‘locking down’ and stealing possession. But he’s very calm when he’s defending.”

At Chelsea, and then on loan at Swansea and Crystal Palace, Guehi played with Conor Gallagher. “It seems like we can’t leave each other alone,” the midfielder has joked. “We’re best mates.”

They are now England colleagues at this Euros and the depth of quality in that Chelsea academy is partly responsible for helping to shape them into internationals and leading Premier League players. Declan Rice, who also started for the Three Lions against Slovenia, was another player in that academy.

“Chelsea at the time and still is a fantastic academy,” says Beale. “We did a lot of work going around London to get the best players across all of the boroughs.

“Look at the players in the age groups in and around Marc’s: Mason Mount, Declan Rice, Fikayo Tomori, Ola Aina, Tammy Abraham, Dominic Solanke, Reece James, Rhian Brewster, Callum Hudson-Odoi…

“When you had that mix of players, the academy fixtures here in the UK but also going further afield and playing in Europe, the experience that they got playing together and how strong a bond those boys got is fantastic.

“They pushed each other on. The training games were always the best games of the week.

A look at centre-back Marc Guehi’s best bits from the 2023-24 campaign

Like many of those players listed above, Guehi had to leave Chelsea to find regular first-team football but he is now being linked with a summer transfer which would take him to the top end of the Premier League. Manchester United and Liverpool are rumoured to be interested in a transfer.

The centre-back isn’t the biggest defender in the league at 6ft and he is a right-footer playing on the left side of a backline, but Beale is confident Guehi would cope with that transition to one of the country’s biggest clubs, pointing to his technical skills in the position

“His reading of the game and his athleticism gets him a yard on his centre-forward,” says Beale.

Marc Guehi has been one of England’s top performers at the Euros

“He shows a huge amount of confidence to play on the left side and his technical upbringing from Chelsea means he can use his left foot, albeit he is dominant on his right foot.

“When you see the teams line up, he’s not the biggest centre-back but he has a huge leap.

“Quietly people are realising we have an absolute gem in him.”

He might be too humble to sing his own praises, but Guehi has plenty of people talking about him now.

Leon Balogun knows what Rangers need to end Celtic dominance | Football News

Rangers defender Leon Balogun said they will work on “weak spots” to ensure they can cope with the pressure of a title race.

The Ibrox side overturned Celtic’s seven-point lead in the Scottish Premiership last season before a run of poor results saw their Old Firm rivals retain the Scottish Premiership trophy.

Balogun, who has agreed a new one-year deal, said they have to be ready to cope with the challenge ahead.

Kris Boyd on the challenges ahead for Philippe Clement at Rangers, including if the delays to work at Ibrox will impact the team at the start of the season

“We need to have a shift in mentality and build more confidence,” the Nigeria international told Sky Sports News.

“We need to build that through pre-season, but that’s a process that we need to work on every day by reputation mainly and gaining confidence in what you do.

“Under the manager we’ve seen what he was able to do in a very short period of time.

“Given he now has a full pre-season to work with us to implement his ideas, that’s one factor. Apart from that, it’s what we’re about every year and the quality that’s in the team. It’s about ticking a few boxes and working on a few weak spots that we had last season and make sure they go away.”

Rangers and Celtic shared six goals in an epic match at Ibrox last season

Rangers failed to beat Celtic in the league last season, losing three and drawing one, and Balogun knows that needs to change if they are to win their first title since 2021.

“There was a title race and I think it’s fair to say both teams weren’t at their best throughout the whole season and that made it tight in the end, but they had that edge over us and that’s what we need to focus on specifically,” he added.

“It might be pressure, it might be a mentality thing or it might be confidence but whatever it is we have to make sure we get it out of the system in pre-season. The earlier the better.

“If you want to be the champion you need to beat that team that is your rival. That was the stumble stone last season and we need to make sure it doesn’t happen this season.”

Jefte is one of five summer signings at Rangers

First up for Rangers is Hearts at Tynecastle Park on August 3, live on Sky Sports, a match Balogun believes will show how ready they are to challenge at the top.

“I think it’s a game you have to prepare for really well. Hearts are normally one of the stronger teams in the league so I think it’s a perfect start to see where we are at that point in time.

“We have something to make up for and we want to make a good start to the season, not an easy one necessarily.”

Rangers: SPFL chief Neil Doncaster vows to be ‘flexible and fair’ with Ibrox stadium issues | Football News

Scottish Professional Football League chief executive Neil Doncaster told Sky Sports News they will be flexible but fair when dealing with Rangers’ stadium problems.

Delays to the shipment of materials from Asia mean upgrades to the Copland Road stand cannot be completed before the start of the new season, with Rangers expecting games to be impacted.

Motherwell and Ross County are both scheduled to visit Ibrox in the first three games of the new Scottish Premiership season, with Rangers also due to play in the Champions League qualifiers.

Supporters are awaiting news about how the situation will affect them amid reports that moving games to Murrayfield is a potential option.

Doncaster said the governing body will work with the club to try and resolve the issues.

There have been delays to a shipment of materials

The former Norwich City chief said: “Unfortunately these things do happen. I used to run a club and we had to build a stand and worked very closely with the league to ensure our fixtures went ahead with only three parts of the ground available.

“Now the fixtures are out, we will be liaising with Rangers. Obviously they have a far better handle on the works than we do.

“We will be doing our best to work with them to try to get them through what is clearly a difficult situation.

“I have been very impressed with the way that the new chairman, John Bennett, has tried to strengthen relationships across the game and we will certainly be looking to work with him and his team to be as flexible as we can be while being fair to everyone else.”

Rangers transfer news: Liam Kelly joins club as Hamza Igamane edges closer to Ibrox move | Football News

Rangers transfer news: Liam Kelly joins club as Hamza Igamane edges closer to Ibrox move | Football News

Rangers have completed the signing of Liam Kelly after the goalkeeper signed a two-year deal at Ibrox.

The Scotland international is manager Philippe Clement’s fifth summer signing, after the arrivals of Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron and Oscar Cortes – while Mohamed Diomande made his loan move permanent.

Kelly returns to the club on the expiration of his Motherwell contract – having left Rangers in 2018 and played for Livingston, Queen’s Park and the Fir Park club.

He will provide competition to No 1 Jack Butland, while Robby McCrorie could depart in search of first-team action. Kelly was part of the Scotland squad at Euro 2024 – but did not feature in Germany.

Kelly said: “It is unbelievable to be back at Rangers, when I left, I probably never thought I would be back, but I am so delighted to be here. I know the size of the club, I spent 14 years here, so it is a great feeling, and I am looking forward to the new challenge.

“You always have faith in your own ability that you can play at the top level and this club is the highest level. I am joining a really talented group of players and a really talented group of goalkeepers, so I am excited.”

Defender Leon Balogun has told Sky Sports News that Rangers will be ready for a title race next season, vowing to get any weaknesses

Clement added: “I am delighted we have been able to secure the signing of Liam. We have had some really positive conversations, and he is a goalkeeper with experience in Scotland and in the Scottish Premiership which will be valuable for our squad.

“Under Colin Stewart, we have a really strong goalkeeping department, and the addition of Liam will only further strengthen that as we prepare for the 2024/25 season.”

Director of football recruitment, Nils Koppen said: “We are thrilled to welcome a goalkeeper with Liam’s experience into our squad.

“He is someone who knows the demands of this club and league, and enjoyed a positive past few seasons at Motherwell. It is important we continue to strengthen all aspects of the squad, and it is fantastic we have been able to add Liam to the group.”

Meanwhile, striker Hamza Igamane is also closing in on his move to Rangers.

He is set to join from Moroccan club AS Far Rabat where he scored seven goals and provided six assists in 20 appearances this season.

Boyd: Rangers need stability

Kris Boyd on the challenges ahead for Philippe Clement at Rangers, including if the delays to work at Ibrox will impact the team at the start of the season

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd on Sky Sports News:

“Clement will obviously want to bring in his own players. It’s more difficult with the players under contract trying to move them out.

“The ones he’s brought in in the past have done reasonably well but you have to start winning things on a regular basis.

“There have been rumours Connor Goldson and James Tavernier will move on. They’re under contract. It’s not going to be easy to force them out. They need someone to come along and take them off your hands, if that’s the case.

“But a continuous turnover of 10, 12 players every summer is no good. Rangers need to get stability.”

The 2024 summer transfer window in the Premier League and Scottish Premiership officially opened on Friday June 14.

The window will close on August 30 at 11pm UK time in England and at 11.30pm in Scotland.

The Premier League and Scottish Premiership brought forward Deadline Day to link up with the other major leagues in Europe. The closing dates were set following discussions with the leagues in England, Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

Scottish Women’s Premier League 2024/25 fixtures, dates and schedule: Celtic start against Dundee United | Football News

Champions Celtic will kick off their Scottish Women’s Premier League title defence at home to Dundee United on August 11.

They pipped their Old Firm rivals to a first title win on the final day of last season, and this time out Rangers will start their campaign at Aberdeen, while 16-time champions Glasgow City visit Montrose.

Newly promoted Queen’s Park start life in the top flight at home to Hearts, while Spartans take on Motherwell and Partick Thistle face Hibernian on the opening weekend.

Celtic won their first-ever SWPL title on the last day of the season thanks to Amy Gallacher’s 90th-minute winner against Hibs

The second weekend of the season will see Celtic visit Glasgow City in what will be a key clash in the title race on August 18, while the first Old Firm meeting of the campaign takes place on October 2 as Rangers host Celtic.

Just 11 days later the Gers will then travel to Glasgow City on October 13 in another crucial game as clubs battle for top spot.

The next Old Firm is on November 17, while City’s second game against Celtic is on February 16 and before that they meet Rangers again on December 15.

The first Edinburgh derby is on September 8 as Hibernian host Hearts, while the reverse of that fixture is on November 17.

The final round of matches before the split takes place on March 2, with all teams then playing those in their half of the table twice again – as the season ends on May 18.

Elsewhere, in the SWPL 2, Boroughmuir Thistle face Ayr United, Gartcairn host St Johnstone, Hamilton Academical play Livingston and Rossvale start against Kilmarnock on the opening day on August 11.

‘Another compelling season awaits’

Image:
Three teams have won the league over the last three years

Fiona McIntyre, SWPL managing director, said: “This is an incredibly exciting day in the calendar as clubs, players, coaches, and fans start to plan for the season ahead and can see what fixtures lie ahead as we enter into the third season of the new SWPL.

“After yet another dramatic end to last season, there’s a growing level of anticipation and excitement around fixture release day and the upcoming campaign.

“We can expect two extremely competitive and entertaining divisions again. We have had three different league winners in the last three years, showing how exciting the title race is. We anticipate another compelling season as clubs battle to finish in the top-six in the SWPL and fight to avoid relegation in both leagues. With three new teams in SWPL 2 for the first time, there is an element of the unknown to complement the traditionally tight league which is a fascinating prospect.

“With the upcoming changes to the league format ahead of the 2025/26 season three teams will be relegated from the SWPL this season. I have no doubt this will add to the drama of the forthcoming season and result in an even more competitive environment as we continue to develop the elite women’s game for years to come.

“Alongside our clubs, we can’t wait to get the new campaign started and to build on the momentum and success of last season.”

What are the key dates for the 2024/25 SWPL season?

Start date – August 11
SWPL 1 winter break – December 23 to January 12, 2025
SWPL 2 winter break – December 16 to January 4, 2025
Final pre-split fixtures – March 2, 2025
Final round of matches – May 18, 2025
Play-off finals – May 22/23, 2025
Sky Sports Cup final – March 22 or 23, 2025

Rangers transfer news: Liam Kelly completes Ibrox medical | Football News

Rangers are closing in on the signing of Motherwell’s Liam Kelly after the goalkeeper completed a medical ahead of a move to Ibrox.

The Scotland international is set to become Philippe Clement’s fifth summer signing, after the arrivals of Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron and Oscar Cortes – while Mohamed Diomande made his loan move permanent.

Kelly will return to the club he started his career in at the youth team and provide competition to No1 Jack Butland, while Robby McCrorie could depart in search of first-team action.

Kelly was part of the Scotland squad at Euro 2024 – but did not feature in Germany.

Defender Leon Balogun has told Sky Sports News that Rangers will be ready for a title race next season, vowing to get any weaknesses

Meanwhile, striker Hamza Igamane is also closing in on his move to Rangers.

He is set to join the Ibrox side from Moroccan club AS Far Rabat where he scored seven goals and provided six assists in 20 appearances this season.

Boyd: Rangers need stability

Kris Boyd on the challenges ahead for Philippe Clement at Rangers, including if the delays to work at Ibrox will impact the team at the start of the season.

The 2024 summer transfer window in the Premier League and Scottish Premiership officially opens on Friday June 14 – the same day that Euro 2024 starts.

Simranjit Singh Thandi: Ex-England youth thrilled with recognition at Punjab United vs Sporting Khalsa friendly | Football News

Former England youth international Simranjit Singh Thandi says his story demonstrates “anything is possible” as he prepares to be recognised at a pre-season friendly ahead of South Asian Heritage Month.

Singh Thandi’s reputation across Europe has grown after a sterling second half of the season at Cypriot top-division side Doxa Katokopias. The former Stoke City full-back started 16 matches out of 18, with his performances earning him a spot in the 2023/24 British South Asians in Football Team of the Season.

The team will go on show in Gravesend when Punjab United host Sporting Khalsa at the Steve Cook Stadium on July 13 in the second annual celebratory fixture between the two sides ahead of South Asian Heritage Month, which runs from July 18 to August 17.

Punjab United and Sporting Khalsa both have Sikh owners and both teams play in Step 4 of the National League System, in the eighth tier of English football.

Singh Thandi, who had a spell as a youngster at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Leicester (GNG Leicester FC), admits that he is thrilled his story will be showcased in the beating heart of the community, five days before the start of South Asian Heritage Month.

“I’m honoured to be a part of the Team of the Season. It’s an incredible feeling. There are some brilliant players in there, so to be alongside them is a good feeling,” the former England U17 international told Sky Sports News.

“For people to recognise what we have done as well is a great thing.

“A lot of British South Asians and Sikh youngsters ask me how I feel now that I have got to this level and I say to them if you put in a shift, work hard, keep focused and you stay consistent then you can aspire to be anything.

Leicester City midfielder Arjan Raikhy joined Sky Sports News’ Dev Trehan at last year’s launch of the groundbreaking South Asians in Football Team of the Season when Sporting Khalsa hosted Punjab United

“It’s important people know that anything is possible and I hope they stick with whatever journey they are so that they can achieve their dreams.”

Hamza has ‘done really well for himself’

Singh Thandi spent a decade at Leicester City’s academy prior to turning pro at Stoke – and the defender’s appearance in the South Asians in Football Team of the season sees him reunited with British-Bangladeshi midfielder Hamza Choudhury.

“I remember playing with him when I was growing up in the U14s and U15s and he was in the U16s and the U18s,” Singh Thandi recalls.

“It was great to get to know him when I was a kid growing up, because we actually used to ball boy at Leicester first-team games!

Former Leicester youngster Sim Thandi reflected on his move to Cypriot side AEK Larnaca where he made his senior debut in a 4-0 Europa League qualifying win against Levski Sofia last season

“He’s done really well for himself. I saw that he was captain for a few games as well last season, and Leicester got promoted which is massive.

“To be alongside him in the Team of the Season is great – just like being with an old friend, you know what I mean.”
