Benjamin Sesko: Arsenal and Tottenham target expected to commit future to RB Leipzig by signing new contract | Football News

Benjamin Sesko is expected to sign a new contract with RB Leipzig this week, Sky Sports News understands.

The Slovenian striker has been linked with a number if Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Tottenham.

However, he will sign an improved deal with the German club ahead of the Euros. His Slovenia side will face England, Denmark and Serbia at Euro 2024.

Watch all of Benjamin Sesko goals for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga this season…

The 21-year-old forward scored 18 goals in all competitions for Leipzig last season, including goals in each of the last seven Bundesliga matches of the campaign.

What strikers are on Premier League clubs’ radars?

Arsenal and Manchester United are still monitoring Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee amid strong interest from AC Milan.

Both clubs are understood to be keeping a close eye on developments with the striker, who is among a number of attacking options Arsenal and United are looking at this summer.

Sky in Italy are reporting Milan are still pushing to sign the 23-year-old after flying to London late last week for talks. Nothing was agreed but they remain in contact with his representatives.

Zirkzee has a £34m (€40m) release clause in his contract, which has two years left to run.

Arsenal want to bring in a young striker they can develop, having turned their attention away from players such as Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

What does each Premier League team need this season?

What does every Premier League team need in the summer transfer window? Sky Sports statistician Paul Harrison dives into the data to find out…

Arsenal

Few flaws can be found in a team who have finished runners-up to Manchester City in successive seasons. However, not a single Arsenal player has surpassed 16 Premier League goals in four campaigns.

This season, Kai Havertz’s return of nine goals in his final 14 league appearances this season was promising, but Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus failed to reach double figures between them from a combined 54 league appearances, with neither finding the net after January.

Tottenham

Another false dawn at Tottenham, who were top of the table and unbeaten after 10 Premier League games under Ange Postecoglou.

Their capitulation in the 4-1 home defeat against Chelsea in November became the norm as the season progressed. Their defensive stats in the final 28 games resembled a team in a relegation battle.

Better midfield protection and competent defensive depth are required if they are to stand any chance of fighting for a top-four finish next term.

When does the summer transfer window open and close?

The 2024 summer transfer window in the Premier League officially opens on Friday June 14 – the same day that Euro 2024 starts.

The window will close on August 30 at 11pm UK time in England and at midnight in Scotland.

The Premier League has brought forward Deadline Day to link up with the other major leagues in Europe. The closing dates were set following discussions with the leagues in England, Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

Carlos Alcaraz: Crowning of a new ‘King of Clay’ at the French Open symbolises dawn of a new era for tennis | Tennis News

With Carlos Alcaraz clinching his maiden French Open title, the tennis world is witnessing the changing of the guard and a new ‘King of Clay’.

It’s poetically appropriate that the man who takes the throne spent his youth running home to watch his idol, compatriot and previous chief of the red dirt, Rafael Nadal, lift the trophy.

When Alcaraz dispatched a valiant Alexander Zverev 6-3 2-6 5-7 6-1 6-2 on court Phillipe Chatrier the Spaniard, still just 21, made history as the youngest man to win Grand Slams on all three of the sport’s surfaces following his Wimbledon and US Open titles.

Alcaraz had come into the tournament with doubts over his fitness. He had missed the Italian Open due to an injury he sustained to his right forearm, arrived in Paris with barely any matches under his belt and saw out the French Open with an arm sleeve. The pre-tournament uncertainties added to his achievement.

“This is the moment I’m really proud about,” Alcaraz said. “Winning the US Open when I reached for the first time the No 1 [ranking], was something that I dreamt about since I started playing tennis. So it was pretty special.

“The way I won Wimbledon, beating Djokovic in five sets, has been a great achievement for me. Right now, lifting the Roland Garros trophy, knowing everything I’ve been through the last month with the injuries, is the proudest one.”

Alcaraz said himself that his “game suits every surface.” He first learned the sport on clay, he finds himself most comfortable on hard courts – he sought to excel there because that’s what is used at most tournaments – and his always-look-to-attack style is a perfect fit for grass, as his win over seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic in last year’s final at the All England Club proved. Alcaraz’s title defence there begins on July 1.

Of course, he said, he works on his defence. And his drop shots and volleys are valuable tools, as Zverev and so many others can bear rueful witness to.

But Alcaraz’s underlying principle is this: “My main goal is being aggressive, as much as I can.” He plied his aggression on centre court at Roland Garros, under a quote from Garros – an aviation trailblazer – that reads: “Victory belongs to the most tenacious.”

In the semi-finals in Paris, he beat Jannik Sinner – who replaced the injured Djokovic at No 1 in the rankings – and came back from a two-sets-to-one deficit by grabbing eight of the last 11 games in a four-hour, nine-minute match. The final saw Alcaraz wear down Zverev, again erasing a 2-1 deficit in sets, this time by rolling through 12 of the last 15 games in a four-hour, 19-minute match.

Tennis has a new hero

The influence of the “big three” is waning. Nadal fell to eventual finalist Zverev; despite Djokovic’s efforts, injury forced his withdrawal; and Roger Federer retired in 2022. A gaping hole has been left in the centre of the sport and none seem more prepared to fill it than Alcaraz.

In clinching his third Grand Slam, he followed the footsteps of his childhood hero Nadal who was dubbed the ‘King of Clay’ for his 14 French Open championships across his illustrious career. He may have 13 more championships to claim to equal Nadal, but the youngster has time – and no little ability – on his side.

Djokovic holds the record for the greatest number of men’s Grand Slam singles titles with 24, while Nadal sits next on 22 and Federer two further back on 20. However, Djokovic won his first major at the 2008 Australian Open when he was 20, while Federer did so at Wimbledon in 2003 aged 21. Alcaraz picked up his first aged 19 at the US Open, and the world has been at his feet ever since.

The Spaniard is just an eighth of the way towards Djokovic’s haul, but that has not stopped him dreaming of achieving the feat.

“I hope so,” Alcaraz said when asked whether he could eventually match Djokovic’s record tally.

“I talked to coach Juan Carlos Ferrero a few days ago. Before the final, he told me how I’m going to fight for a third Grand Slam title ‘with everything you have been through, and you know how difficult winning a Grand Slam is – and Djokovic has 24!’ So it is unbelievable.

“Right now I can’t think about it. I just want to keep going and let’s see how many I’m going to take at the end of my career.

“Hopefully I’ll reach the 24, but right now I’m going to enjoy my third one, and let’s see in the future.”

What next for Alcaraz?

Alcaraz will be eyeing a return to the No 1 ranking having beaten the recently-installed No 1 Sinner in the semi-final, and there is no questioning his ambitions to reclaim the spot he held in 2022.

At 3-0 in Grand Slam finals, we can only watch in awe at what Alcaraz can achieve next. Whatever lies in the young man’s future, he’ll take to it with his infectious beaming smile that continues to draw in support.

Jack Draper beats Sebastian Ofner in Stuttgart Open to start grass-court season with victory | Tennis News

Great Britain’s Jack Draper beat Austria’s Sebastian Ofner 7-6 7-6 at the Stuttgart Open to start his grass-court season with victory.

In a tight and tense contest, Draper clinched both set wins via tie-breaks, claiming the first 7-4 and the second 7-5 to book his place in the last 16 in Germany.

Draper, the sixth seed in Stuttgart, will next face the winner of the match between his compatriot Andy Murray and American Marcos Giron, who play on Tuesday morning, live on Sky Sports.

“I thought it was a really good match,” Draper said. “Both of us played really clean tennis, executing really well.

“When it came down to it, I’m glad I competed really well and got over the line – it’s good to be back on the grass as well.

“I don’t know [how he stayed calm]. Everyone here is such a good player, they can play good tennis too, and sometimes you have to stay present and not let it affect you too much.

“I played point-by-point and I gave myself the opportunity to come through the match.”

T20 World Cup: Pakistan suffer thrilling six-run defeat to rivals India to leave hopes in jeopardy | Cricket News

T20 World Cup: Pakistan suffer thrilling six-run defeat to rivals India to leave hopes in jeopardy | Cricket News

India dealt a cruel blow to rivals Pakistan’s T20 World Cup hopes with a thrilling six-run victory in New York.

Billed as one of the clashes of the tournament, the contest delivered as it went down to the final over, Pakistan needing 12 runs from the final two balls but only managing six as they battled valiantly but lost to their old foes once again.

Wickets from Jasprit Bumrah (3-14) and Hardik Pandya (2-24) came at crucial moments as India turned the game on its head after they were bowled out for 119 by Pakistan, Bumrah taking the key wicket of Mohammad Rizwan (31) who was anchoring the innings.

Pakistan won an important toss and chose to bowl which seemed to work to their advantage, Naseem Shah (3-21), Haris Rauf (3-21), and Mohammad Amir (2-21) starring with the ball in hand as they reduced India from 89-3 to 119 all out, just 30 runs coming as seven wickets fell.

Mohammad Amir took the wickets of Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja as India fell to 96-7

However, the Pakistan batting attack fell apart under the pressure and from 72-2 were reduced to 88-5 themselves, unable to find big boundaries in the final overs to seal a big win.

In Group A, India now sit top of the table, with USA in second. Pakistan are now in fourth and are yet to pick up a win.

Ravi Shastri could hardly contain his excitement ahead of the toss for India’s T20 World Cup clash with Pakistan

Bumrah and Hardik strike to dent Pakistan chase

With the 120-run target set by India in their sights, Babar Azam (13) and Mohammad Rizwan (10) looked to be building a solid partnership early in the second innings, but the Pakistan skipper was the first to fall as he sent one to Suryakumar Yadav in the slips, seating his team on 26-1 after 4.4 overs.

Rizwan, carrying a finger injury from a Hardik delivery, then started to build alongside Usman Khan, bringing their side to 57-1 at the halfway mark and comfortable that victory could be in their sights.

Mohammed Siraj’s attempted throw at the stumps didn’t go to plan as he hit Pakistan batter Muhammad Rizwan!

However, India then turned to Axar Patel (1-11) and he immediately made his mark to take out Usman Khan (13) via lbw from his first delivery of the innings, India cleverly using the review which showed he was hit in line and the ball was not sliding down like the umpire originally thought.

Fakhar Zaman (13) was then the man to partner with Rizwan in the middle as they continued on at the required run rate of six but a mistake from the former saw him caught behind by Pant after gloving one up in the air from a Hardik delivery, leaving Pakistan on 73-3 after 13 overs and needing 47 runs from 42 balls.

Score summary – India vs Pakistan

India: Jasprit Bumrah (3-14), Hardik Pandya (2-24); Rishabh Pant (42 runs from 31 balls)

Pakistan: Naseem Shah (3-21), Mohammad Amir (2-23), Haris Rauf (3-21); Mohammad Rizwan (31 runs from 44 balls)

With the game in the balance, Bumrah then became the star man as he took out the key wicket of Rizwan with a beauty of an inswinger, putting Pakistan under pressure with four wickets gone and now more than a run a ball needed, 37 runs from 30 balls the target.

Jasprit Bumrah took the crucial wicket of Muhammad Rizwan to revive India’s hopes of beating their fierce rivals Pakistan

With nervous energy in the air and Pakistan chasing the game, Shadab Khan (4) was duped by the short ball of Hardik and caught behind by Pant, putting India firmly in charge as they left Pakistan needing 21 from 12 balls.

The climactic ending to a thriller of an encounter then reached fever pitch as Iftikhar Ahmed (5) was caught by Arshdeep after sending one high on the final ball of the 19th over, Imad Wasim (15) then caught behind on the first ball of the 20th.

With 18 runs needed from five deliveries and seven wickets down, Pakistan added a single then a reverse scoop boundary but could only find six of the required 12 runs from the final two balls, leaving them heartbreakingly close to only their second-ever T20 World Cup win against India and putting India in the driving seat of Group A.

India’s Rishabh Pant played a remarkable shot as he hit a boundary off Pakistan’s Haris Rauf

The loss will feel worse for Pakistan after their strong showing in the first innings to leave India all out for 119.

Star performances came from Shah to dismiss Virat Kohli (4), Patel (20), and Dube (3), Rauf to dismiss Suryakumar (7), then Hardik (7) and Bumrah (0) in successive deliveries, and Amir to remove danger man Pant (42) and Ravindra Jadeja (0) in successive balls.

Virat Kohli could only make four as India were reduced to 12-1 in the second over against Pakistan

Despite the solid showing from Pakistan’s bowlers, Pakistan now have two losses from two games after their shock defeat to the USA, putting a real dent in their hopes of reaching the Super 8.

What they said

Pakistan captain Babar Azam:

“I think they bowled well after 10 overs. We were chasing 120, we were run a ball for the first 10 overs, but back-to-back wickets and then we left too much in the end.

“Tactics was simple, play normally, rotate strike, 5-6 an over. But in that period we had too many dot balls, the pressure was on us, and we lost three quick wickets.

“Can’t expect too much from tailenders. We were not up to the mark in the first six overs, we had targeted 40-45 runs, we have not capitalised properly.

“Pitch looked decent, ball coming nicely. Little bit slow, some balls are bouncing a bit more, but you expect it with a drop-in pitch.”

India bowler and player of the match Jasprit Bumrah:

“It feels really good. We felt we were a little under par, and when the sun came out, the wicket got a little better, so we had to be really disciplined.

“I tried to keep it simple, tried to hit the seam as much as I can, focus on my execution. It felt like we were in India, and the cheering is really appreciated, we were really happy with the support we got, it gave us a lot of energy.

“Focus on the now. We’ve played two games, played very good cricket. We’ll stick to our processes and come out and try our best.”

What’s next?

There is just one game at the T20 World Cup on Monday with New York the venue once again as South Africa face Bangladesh.

South Africa have beaten Sri Lanka and Netherlands across their first two matches in Group D, while Bangladesh’s sole fixture so far ended in a two-wicket win over Sri Lanka.

Canadian GP: Max Verstappen overcomes wet-race chaos to beat rueful Lando Norris, George Russell to win | F1 News

Canadian GP: Max Verstappen overcomes wet-race chaos to beat rueful Lando Norris, George Russell to win | F1 News

Max Verstappen won a chaotic and gripping Canadian Grand Prix with Lando Norris and George Russell left to reflect on what might have been after a Montreal race of high drama amid on-off rain.

In an unpredictable 70-lap race that featured four changes of lead and two Safety Car periods triggered by crashes, Verstappen returned to winning ways a fortnight after Red Bull’s miserable Monaco for his fifth win of the season to re-establish a more comfortable world-championship lead, of 56 points.

McLaren’s Norris twice led the race – the first time after overtaking both Verstappen and Russell – but had to settle for second after the cards did not fall in his favour, particularly under the first Safety Car.

Polesitter Russell ended up third and looked particularly crestfallen after a topsy-turvy race in which he made several mistakes and collided with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

Dropping as low as fifth after that latter incident following the race’s second Safety Car period, Russell was then overtaken by Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who went on to overtake Piastri soon afterwards and move into the final podium place.

Watch Max Verstappen claim victory at the Canadian Grand Prix as Mercedes battle it out on last lap

But Russell rallied late on and repassed Hamilton on the penultimate lap to ensure he was the drive who sealed Mercedes’ first Grand Prix podium of 2024.

Fourth still represented Hamilton’s best result on a Sunday so far this year, although the seven-time Monaco victor, who qualified six places behind Russell in seventh, described it as “one of the worst races I’ve driven”.

Overtaken by both Mercedes cars, who had been the only leading cars to pit for a second set of dry tyres, Oscar Piastri ended up fifth in the second McLaren.

Aston Martin took sixth and seventh with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, Canada’s home driver, respectively.

In a fraught race-long fight for the final points positions, Daniel Ricciardo overcome a five-second time penalty for a jump start to fight back and cap the best weekend of his disapoointing season so far in eighth. Alpine also scored crucial points with Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon ninth and 10th.

Ferrari though endured a total nightmare with their hopes of building momentum from their Monaco win undone by retirements for both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who caused a second Safety Car by spinning and collecting Williams’ Alex Albon.

Lando Norris eases past both George Russell and Max Verstappen to claim the lead at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez’s miserable weekend ended in a DNF too after the Mexican, who had dropped out in Q1 on Saturday, crashed and broke his Red Bull’s rear wing against the barriers.

Canadian GP result: Top 10

1) Max Verstappen, Red Bull

2) Lando Norris, McLaren

3) George Russell, Mercedes

4) Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

5) Oscar Piastri, McLaren

6) Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin

Jamie Chadwick: British driver to start on pole position for Indy NXT race at Road America live on Sky Sports | F1 News

Britain’s Jamie Chadwick will start on pole position for the Indy NXT race at Road America, which is live on Sky Sports Mix on Sunday at 6.05pm.

Chadwick was claiming her maiden pole position in Indy NXT, which is a feeder series to IndyCar, and is just the third woman to achieve that feat.

In May, the 26-year-old became the first woman to stand on the podium in Indy NXT when she took third place at Indianapolis.

She will look to stand on the top step of the podium after Sunday’s 20-lap race, which begins at 6.05 on Sky Sports Mix. Viewers with a Sky box can tune into Sky Sports Mix for free and can watch the IndyCar race at Road America at 8.30pm on the same channel.

“I’m so happy. We struggled a little bit this weekend chasing balance. When [team-mate) Louis [Foster] did the lap he did, I knew we would have a good car,” said Chadwick.

“Track conditions improving, this is our shot in our group, as well. I really thought we could make the most of this opportunity. It’s going to be a tough race, but I’m confident in what we can do.”

Chadwick also launched a new initiative in an attempt to increase female participation in grassroots motorsport earlier this year.

The three-time W Series champion partnered with Daytona Motorsport in a year-long commitment to provide free karting and mentorship for girls.

She is the UK’s most decorated active female motorsport driver, having dominated all three years of the W Series before crossing over to the fiercely-competitive Indy NXT series.

Chadwick is also part of F1 team Williams’ driver academy, and is taking on a mentoring role with their F1 representative Lia Block this season in F1 Academy.

Paris – Born to Play: From Kylian Mbappe to William Saliba – how the Parisian suburbs became football’s biggest talent factory | Football News

Then there are the opportunities. The Ile-de-France area has 1,100 registered football clubs with around 325,000 young players signed up. Some of those clubs are famed for attracting the right talent.

Mbappe and Saliba played together at AS Bondy. Henry and Saha – both from immigrant families who came from Guadeloupe – trained at the infamous Clairefontaine academy after being spotted at Ile-de-France clubs.

Riyad Mahrez, whose family came to the area from Algeria, played for AAS Sarcelles, the fourth biggest club in France, who have also sent players to Serie A, Manchester United and Hoffenheim.

“The level of the Ile-de-France championship for young people is the highest in France. It’s one of the highest in Europe I’d say!” says Sarcelles coach Mohamed Coulibaly to Sky Sports. “We have the best amateur regional teams and are capable to compete with professional clubs from all over the world.

“The secret of the streets of Paris is that everyone wants to assert themselves and everyone wants to impose themselves. It’s like a small jungle!

“At 16, 17, 18 years old, [Mahrez] still had the soul of a nine-year-old child. Even when he was struggling at 14 or 15, and didn’t play much, he always had this fire where he said: ‘I’m going to become a professional’.”

Not all make it though. While the streets contain a haven for football’s young talent, it is not always a safe one. The Ile-de-France region has a poverty weight of 15.5 per cent, while concerning crime levels have caused it to gain an unwanted reputation.

“It’s a town that is a bit tough,” says Saha. “You have to be careful not doing the wrong stuff, or meeting the wrong people.

“I have a few friends more talented than me, and were capable of doing great things, they picked the wrong choices and roads, met the wrong people. Then it’s too late.”

But clubs try to help with those issues. Anthony Martial recalls the help of coaches and “youth educators” who have helped put players on the right path.
