Northumberland Plate: Pure joy for Brian Ellison with Onesmoothoperator at Newcastle | Racing News

Newcastle-born Brian Ellison trainer celebrated turning 72 on Friday with the best present on Saturday as Onesmoothoperator cruised home in the Northumberland Plate.

Trainer Ellison was born on Pitmen’s Derby day back in 1952. He has never made any secret of his desire to land this prestigious north-east prize and the success of Onesmoothoperator sparked jubilant scenes in the winner’s enclosure at Gosforth Park.

Given a confident ride by Connor Beasley, the 12-1 winner eased through to the front at the furlong pole on the nearside rail and comfortably beat 40-1 outsider Evaluation by two and a half lengths.

Ellison said: “I’ve been wanting to win it for a long time and we knew we had him right. In the last two days, we were a bit worried about the surface being on the soft side, but the lads came in today and said it was riding a lot quicker.

“I told Connor not to worry about the pace, as I knew Tashkhan was going to be up there and made sure there was a good pace. They went a helluva gallop and when this horse is on-song, he’s some animal.

“Turning in I said ‘this has hacked up!’ Connor said he could have won on the bridle, but he’s a good horse when he’s right.

“I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. I thought we’d won it with Seamour one year (2016), when he went clear and got caught, and we’ve come here trying to win it before and been disappointed.

“It’s always in the back of your mind that you’re going to get disappointed and it hasn’t sunk in that we’ve won it, but it’s fantastic.

“Connor used to come to mine to ride when he was a baby, as his mum and dad worked for me. We go back a long way.

“I’m from here and have got a lot of connections here and a lot of family and friends. It’s great for the north and great for Newcastle – it’s a great race to be in.

“It’s got to be (the best day of my training career). Everyone says ‘you’ve got to win the Plate’ and it’s nice to get the monkey off your back.”

Winning owner Patrick Boyle, also a proud Geordie, said: “It’s a big thrill, it’s the biggest race in the north east and I’m from just round the corner.

“He travelled brilliant and we knew the horse was in great form. He has to come off a strong pace and he did. Fair play to Brian and the team, they’re the guys that do it all.

“I think we’ll have a celebration tonight. Brian is a great friend and he’s got family here. It means a lot for him and I’m delighted.”

Montassib runs down Kinross to snatch Chipchase spoils

Montassib claimed the most notable victory of his career to date when narrowly outpointing Kinross in the Jenningsbet Nun Street Newcastle Open Now Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle.

As a dual Group One and multiple Group Two winner, Ralph Beckett’s Kinross brought a touch of star quality to this six-furlong Group Three – and having sidestepped the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, the seven-year-old was a 5-2 favourite on what his first outing since October.

The William Haggas-trained Montassib, who actually made a winning debut at Newcastle four years ago, landed Doncaster’s Cammidge Trophy on his first start of 2024, before finishing a creditable sixth in last month’s Duke of York Stakes.

After coming under pressure shortly after halfway, Kinross battled his way to the front under Hector Crouch, but he was unable to resist the late surge of 7-2 shot Montassib and Cieren Fallon, who got up to score by three-quarters of a length.

Haggas, who was landing this prize for the third year in succession following the recent triumphs of Sense Of Duty and Tiber Flow, said of his latest victor: “I’m delighted to win a Group Three with him, he’s a good horse who just wants a bit of cut in the ground.

“I’m not sure where we’ll go now, but he won’t go to Goodwood for the Stewards’ Cup. He’d have to carry a Group-race penalty now, so I think we’re doomed (in handicap company).

“I think we’ll stick to stakes races and go wherever we can get a bit of dig in the ground.

“He’ll be an outsider, but it would be nice to think he might end up running on Champions Day at Ascot.”

Fallon was completing a quick-fire double on the card for his boss after Wiltshire’s victory in the opening race.

He said: “He’s such a good horse and he has such a turn of foot off a strong gallop. We saw it at Doncaster, where he had nowhere to go with half a furlong to go and he got the gap and off he went. It was the same today.

“At York the last day, things didn’t work out, I didn’t give him the best of rides and I had to make up for it today. I was very confident, as with Kinross coming in off such a long lay-off, I thought if I was going to get him anywhere, it was going to be in the last half-furlong and everything went right.”

Today on Sky Sports racing: Trooper Bisdee faces Zoffee in Northumberland Plate at Newcastle | Racing News

It’s day three of the Northumberland Plate Festival and Sir Mark Prescott has two big chances in the feature, but will have to get past Chester Cup hero Zoffee to land the prize at Gosforth Park.

3.10 Newcastle – Duke Of Oxford and Trooper Bisdee feature

Sir Mark Prescott is double handed with Trooper Bisdee and True Legend as he seeks to win his first Northumberland Plate.

Trooper Bisdee has been a typical Prescott handicapper, improving from a mark of 56 to his current rating of 90, and he will be fancied to complete the hat-trick under Hollie Doyle.

True Legend, the ride of Cieren Fallon, was narrowly denied when runner-up in a good race at Goodwood last month and could have each-way claims as he steps up to two miles for the first time.

Of the others, Chester Cup hero Zoffee is likely to be in the mix, whilst Duke Of Oxford has an excellent all-weather record but must defy stall 20 under Tyler Heard.

2.04 Newcastle – Kinross headlines strong Chipchase field

Star sprinter Kinross headlines a field of 11 for this Group 3 Chipchase Stakes.

Ralph Beckett’s seven-year-old has been a fine servant for his connections winning on ten occasions including twice in Group 1 company and he sets the standard as he drops in grade under new pilot Hector Crouch.

Karl Burke’s Spycatcher was sent off the joint 4/1 favourite when down the field in the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes at York last time and needs to bounce back as he switches to the all-weather under Clifford Lee.

William Haggas claimed this race with Tiber Flow last year and he relies on Montassib in the renewal, whilst Albasheer makes a quick return having finished well beaten in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot.

3.35 Chester – Sunfall takes on Al Shabab Storm

Recent winner Sunfall faces Al Shabab Storm in Patron Tequila Handicap at Chester.

The William Haggas-trained Sunfall recorded her second success from just four starts when readily taking a Sandown handicap and she looks the one to beat despite a 7lb hike in the weights.

Andrew Balding saddles Al Shabab Storm who ran a race full of promise when chasing home Qirat in a deep race at Goodwood and a similar effort will see him go close.

Others to note include Ziggy’s Condor who disappointed when favourite at York last time and is better judged on his previous runner-up effort at the same track in May.

Best of the rest

Wiltshire looks the best of the bunch in the opening Handicap contest at Newcastle, but keep a look out Wodao who runs for the first time since transferring to Jamie Osborne from Donnacha O’Brien. Alphonse Le Grande was eliminated from the Northumberland Plate so instead runs in the Vase at 2.35 alongside Legendary Day.

David Probert rides Giant in the Pertemps Network Handicap at 3.40, but Local Hero will be looking to stop him in his tracks for Richard Hannon. There’s also action Stateside, with Godolphin and Charlie Appleby fielding Ottoman Fleet at Grade Two level at 8.52.

Northumberland Plate: Horse-by-horse guide to Newcastle’s feature including a verdict | Racing News

Northumberland Plate: Horse-by-horse guide to Newcastle’s feature including a verdict | Racing News

Our senior form analyst Jamie Lynch delivers his verdict on all 20 declared runners for the historic handicap at Newcastle on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Racing.

1. TASHKHAN (Drawn 16)

Jockey: Ben Robinson | Trainer: B Ellison

A big weight needn’t bother him remembering that he carried 10-2 when third in last year’s Cesarewitch, after which he got bronze again in a Group 1 in France, a class component which rationalises a mark of 111, which could be higher still on some calculation, but his task is magnified by coming on cold, withdrawn from the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot last weekend because of the fast ground: this will be his first start on All-Weather since getting his grounding at Dundalk way back in 2020.

2. YASHIN (1)

Scott McCullagh (3) | Mrs J Harrington

Mostly keeps pattern company these days and off the same mark here as when seventh in last year’s Ebor, when shaping like 2m may well be up his street (first try here). Messing with a tuning-up Kyprios on both starts this year, not to take that too literally, but it suggests if not shows that he’s in the form of his life, and the distance upscale could well be what he’s wanted all along.

3. SPARTAN ARMY (18)

Billy Loughnane | A King

Ultimately underwhelming over hurdles but suddenly surged when setting foot on synthetics and completed a hat-trick prior to checking in third in the Marathon Final here on Good Friday. Both that and his following fifth at Newbury indicates his mark is at its maximum, and difficult draw to overcome in 18.

4. ZOFFEE (13)

Harry Davies | H Palmer

Had been circling around a big one for a long time and eventually nailed the Chester Cup last month. Lessons learnt from last year (when running flat in the Plate) by missing Royal Ascot this time around to give him more time to target this, having won the consolation Vase in 2022. He’s spirited and straightforward but, tellingly, he’s 0/8 when his mark exceeds 90.

Image:
Zoffee is currently third favourite for the race

5. ONESMOOTHOPERATOR (12)

Connor Beasley | B Ellison

Has done his best work at Newcastle, successful in the rearranged November Handicap around here at the end of last year, that over 12f, but he’s equally effective at this trip as highlighted at Southwell last time when splitting Prydwen and Pledgeofallegiance, a performance which looks all the better in light of the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot. If it turns tactical, there are few faster than him in the finish.

6. TRUE LEGEND (15)

Cieren Fallon | Sir Mark Prescott

A great nudger who has nudged up his rating for over a year, beginning off 63 (with success here at Newcastle) and now over 2 stone higher after incremental improvement, but all at shorter trips, never before tackling 2m, maybe on purpose with an eye on this big day. This is the deepest field he has faced by far.

Onesmoothoperator and Ben Robinson are set to team up once more at Newcastle
Image:
Onesmoothoperator and Ben Robinson are set to team up once more at Newcastle

7. TOO FRIENDLY (8)

Callum Shepherd | James Owen

The gamble of the Chester Cup (went off 9-2) but looked a non-stayer there, though it may have more a trait than the trip as he hasn’t found much for pressure twice since over shorter. One remaining ray of light is the All-Weather as the best he has ever looked on the Flat was his Kempton win in March.

8. ZEALANDIA (7)

Josephine Gordon | Ian Williams

Produced a lifetime best on New Year’s Day to win over this course and distance from classy companion Enemy, but the consequence has been a mark in the 90s, which might be beyond him given his dull displays since, the latest in the Chester Cup.

9. SPIRIT MIXER (6)

George Rooke | A M Balding

Chased home heavyweight Trueshan in the memorable 2022 renewal but it has basically been downhill ever since and his latest third was a hollow placing (beaten 8 lengths). There’s no recommending him right now.

10. DUKE OF OXFORD (20)

Tyler Heard (3) | M L W Bell

Up-and-coming stayer who ran a blinder over course and distance when beating all bar Prydwen in the Marathon Final on Good Friday. Easy to put a line through the Chester Cup when he was dropped out from a wide draw but he’s out of luck in that regard yet again, drawn 20 of 20, but for which he’d be amongst the favourites given his age and progressive profile.

Solent Gateway ridden by Hollie Doyle
Image:
Solent Gateway is Hugo Palmer’s charge for the race

11. SOLENT GATEWAY (4)

Rowan Scott | H Palmer

Rebounded from a reduced mark last time at Haydock when runner-up to the thriving Divine Comedy, though never laid a glove on her, and it’s still a stretch to say he’s the same now as when third in this race in 2022.

12. GRAND PROVIDENCE (14)

David Probert | A M Balding

Has been racing for little over a year and still pushing upwards, but has inevitably found it harder in the leagues she’s now playing, fifth in the Chester Cup last time (when having more chance than most from her prominent position). There’s a suspicion she’ll be better with stiffer tests than an All-Weather 2m provides.

13. ISLAND BRAVE (5)

Ethan Jones (5) | H Main

Has previously had two cracks at a Northumberland Plate including a fourth off 100 in 2021 but his efforts this year suggests age has caught up with him, and he’s due to drop a further 3 lb.

14. TROOPER BISDEE (10)

Hollie Doyle | Sir Mark Prescott

Surface stats of 6/9 in handicaps tells a tale of his trajectory and his trainer, and, without knowing the specifics (reassessed mark yet to be published), generally he’s well-in here under a penalty as he’ll be going up a good bit more than 5 lb for his Pontefract win by 4 lengths, which could have been double that had the rider wanted. He’s coming in hot, but he’s missing a few rungs of the ladder to swing at this high-end handicap, plus he hasn’t run on the All-Weather since his 2-y-o groundwork.

Hollie Doyle tasted success aboard Bradsell in 2020
Image:

15. EVALUATION (19)

A Mullen | Miss Lucinda V Russell

Took advantage of circumstances to win a 0-85 at Wolverhampton last time, on just his second start for the stable. This sort of mark has been beyond him in the past – he finished fourth in the Vase off 89 in 2022 – and stall 19 only compounds matters.

16. HOWTH (9)

Marco Ghiani | M Appleby

First go at 2m when fourth in the Marathon Final here on Good Friday, but not seen since. Seems at last to be undergoing a Mick Appleby makeover but probably biting off more than he can chew in a race like this.

Kevin Ryan
Image:
Kevin Ryan saddles Forta Orta

17. GOLDEN FLAME (11)

D Fentiman | Ms D C Faulkner

Trainer had the runner-up last year with Golden Rules, though that one had proven his worth in the spring whereas Golden Flame hasn’t been seen since October 2022 (for Charlie Johnston).

18. FORZA ORTA (17)

J P Sullivan | K A Ryan

Won on his first attempt at 2m at York’s Ebor meeting but hasn’t kicked on from that, albeit beaten only 4 lengths in the Chester Cup (eighth). Making All-Weather debut here, from a difficult draw.

19. RATHGAR (3)

Cam Hardie | J Channon

Has raised his game since coming to 1¾m, but these are challenging circumstances for his first go at this far, from 2 lb out of the handicap in a race as well-contested as this. Best hope is a falsely-run race, which isn’t out of the question looking at the pace projection.

20. ARTISAN DANCER (2)

Andrew Breslin (3) | C Johnston

One of the horses of the All-Weather season for his dependability and durability, and maintaining standards into the turf season, but he has never been in a race like this, and he’s 3 lb out of the weights.

Hollie Doyle’s blog: Trooper Bisdee can emulate Trueshan in Northumberland Plate at Newcastle | Racing News

Hollie Doyle’s blog: Trooper Bisdee can emulate Trueshan in Northumberland Plate at Newcastle | Racing News

Our ambassador seeks another Pitmen’s Derby success on Saturday and is aboard leading fancy Trooper Bisdee, one of several strong weekend rides, live on Sky Sports Racing.

Hoping to emulate Trueshan glory in the Plate

Two years ago the gallant Trueshan gave me one of my proudest days in the saddle when he ground out a record-breaking victory in the Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate, one of the toughest and most famous handicaps in the racing calendar.

Image:
Hollie Doyle scored on Trueshan two years ago

To be back on Saturday with another favourite’s chance on Trooper Bisdee (3.10), live on Sky Sports Racing, will bring those memories back into sharp focus and it would be amazing to repeat the feat for another brilliant trainer, Sir Mark Prescott.

His decision not to run Royal Ascot winner Pledgeofallegiance leaves this progressive four-year-old at the head of the ante-post markets for the two mile Tapeta marathon so I couldn’t wish for a better chance.

With a 5lb penalty for last weekend’s win at Pontefract – his fourth in just five starts – Trooper Bisdee gets in off just 8st 6lb and looks fairly drawn in stall 10. Hopefully he’ll have the tactical speed to be in the right place at the right time.

His stamina knows no bounds as he demonstrated over that demanding two-mile and two furlongs at the West Yorkshire track and though he has little experience of synthetics he does act on a sound surface on turf and this big track should really suit him.

Grande chance on Vase favourite Alphonse

I also have a favourite’s chance in the two mile Jenningsbet Festival Northumberland Vase Handicap (2.35) on Saturday on Cathy O’Leary’s progressive Irish raider Alphonse Le Grande.

Alphonse Le Grande scored at Chester
Image:
Alphonse Le Grande scored at Chester

This talented gelding brings perfect credentials to the race having won the Chester Plate in May for Tony Martin. He’s 8lb higher now but is clearly thriving and is no stranger to the All-Weather with two Dundalk handicaps under his girth this year.

Stall 12 looks okay for him, too. He’s a strong traveller who managed to win well on the Roodee despite not getting the clearest of runs from a much lower starting position.

Quirky Albasheer steps up in class

My old friend Albasheer had no luck in a steadily run Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot last weekend but it will hopefully be a different story in the Jenningsbet Nun Street Newcastle Open Now Chipchase Stakes (2.04) on Saturday.

Archie Watson’s gelding is rated 10lb better on the All-Weather than he is on turf so stepping into Group 3 company shouldn’t be a negative for a horse who won twice at this track back in the winter.

It’s a red hot renewal with dual Group 1 winner Kinross making his belated re-appearance but Albasheer is capable of a big run in this grade if he’s on a going day and has match fitness on his side.

He’s quirky, so needs everything to go his way, but rattled home off a strong pace in a good handicap over course and distance in March and is entitled – on ratings alone – to be in the shake-up.

Rizg back from two-year layoff

My boss Imad Alsagar’s Rizg is a horse we have always thought a lot of so it’s good to see him back from a lengthy absence in the opening Jenningsbet 200 Shops Nationwide Handicap (1.35) on Saturday.

I popped into Roger Varian’s Newmarket yard to sit on him the other day and was really happy with his physical progress since suffering a setback two years ago.

He’s grown and filled out and looks a much stronger horse than he was but this is his first run back since the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in 2022 so we’ll have to see how he takes it.

Improving Hero has nice profile

I have a winning chance on Richard Hannon’s Local Hero in the seven furlong Download The Raceday Ready App Handicap (3.40) on Saturday.

He won well for Sean Levey in a Kempton handicap earlier this month and has a nice enough profile to cope with a 6lb rise to a new mark of 91 on a track he should enjoy.

I’m also on his stable companion Invited for Amo racing in the Wear Skopes Menswear EBF Novice Stakes (4.15). It’s a valuable race for its type so we could come up against some promising types but I like his credentials.

Invited has that edge of experience, finishing third on debut in a 6.5f Newbury novice before bumping into Charlie Appleby and Godolphin’s Ancient Truth over seven furlongs at Newmarket last weekend. He stuck on well that day and should enjoy the straight track.

Ease in weights a plus for Forca

I team up again with Richard Hannon and Amo Racing in the Free Digital Racecard At raceday-ready.com Handicap (4.50) on Saturday on Forca Timao.

He’s run some nice races on the All-Weather, chasing home the useful Storm Catcher at Lingfield and Wolverhampton, and has been eased in the weights. His only win came at Doncaster so a return to a galloping track should be in his favour.

I’m not without a chance in the finale on Saturday, the Get The Inside Track With raceday-ready.com Handicap (5.25) over the extended twelve furlongs.

Eight-year-old Parramount is better known for his exploits over hurdles but has run some nice races on the All-Weather this year. His trainer Charlie Longsdon must be keen to get a run into him as he prefers some give underfoot so this could be a good opportunity until he gets back over timber.

Glimpsed chases black type in strong Hoppings

The renewal of the Jenningsbet In Delves Group 3 Hoppings Fillies’ Stakes (6.00) at Newcastle on Friday looks particularly strong with proven Pattern performers Chic Colombine, Tiffany and German Guineas winner Darnation in the line-up.

I ride Glimpsed for Ralph Beckett, who won a Listed fillies’ race at Newmarket last back-end but hasn’t been able to build on that at York and Epsom this year.

Glimpsed returns to action
Image:
Glimpsed returns to action

That said, she wasn’t disgraced in either race, including the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes on Derby Day, so it would be nice to think she could pinch some valuable black type.

It won’t be easy, with Chic Colombine, who finished in front of her at Epsom, looking the one we all have to beat but it’s a fascinating race to be involved in.

Perfect chance for Watson gelding

Perfectly Timed is definitely going the right way and has plenty going for him in the Skopes.co.uk Best For Menswear Handicap (6.35) on Friday.

Already a winner on the All-Weather, Archie Watson’s three-year-old gelding remains unexposed and ran well enough at Brighton last month considering he didn’t handle the track as well as the winner.

Post Rider, the horse that beat him that day, has won again since to advertise the form and this more conventional test will play to his strengths.

Later, I renew my acquaintance with Phil Kirby’s Fircombe Hall in the Jenningsbet In North Shields Handicap (8.20). I won on this old boy over this course and distance three and a half years ago and although he’s not been in that kind of form lately he did get his head in front at Newcastle in May so clearly retrains his ability.

Outbox back on his travels

Archie Watson and Hambleton Racing’s globetrotter Outbox is back on his travels on Sunday when he runs in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (2.55) in France, live on Sky Sports Racing.

He was back to his best when dominating the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket in the spring but hated every minute of his trip to Denmark for a Group 3 last month.

Good to soft ground and a more conventional track at Saint-Cloud should suit him much better and he felt in great shape when I rode him work at Archie’s earlier in the week. He’s not the easiest to predict and this is a big test, but he might just out-run big odds.

Today on Sky Sports Racing: First day of the Northumberland Plate festival at Newcastle | Racing News

The live action on Sky Sports Racing features racing from Newcastle on the first day of the Northumberland Plate Festival.

4.10 Newcastle – Lattam, Elnajmm and Brunch feature

Last year’s winner Lattam bids to follow up for new connections in the JenningsBet In Kippax Seaton Delaval Handicap (4.10).

Julie Camacho’s Lattam claimed the same race last year when trained by William Haggas. He looks to have strong claims of a repeat from only 3lb higher in the weights.

Four-year-olds have won all seven renewals of this contest, and William Haggas is hoping that will be the same this year as he saddles Elnajmm. This is the four-year-old’s first appearance since being gelded, and he will be fancied to make a winning handicap debut under Sean D Bowen.

Brunch could hit the frame if able to build on his recent Nottingham return for Connor Beasley and Michael Dodds.

2.00 Newcastle – Extra Beat and Gulf Legend headline

Recent winner Extra Beat faces Gulf Legend in the JenningsBet In Scunthorpe Handicap (2.00).

James Horton’s Extra Beat got off the mark when scoring on handicap debut last time out. His trainer reaches for cheekpieces as he seeks another success under Danny Tudhope.

Gulf Legend has progressed with each of his three starts and rates a huge danger as he steps up in distance on his handicap debut under Saffie Osborne.

Swordstick caught the eye when staying on to finish third at Chester and is expected to go close off the same mark.

3.35 Newcastle – Wathnan colt Veydari fancied to break maiden

Wathnan Racing colt Veydari is fancied to break his maiden in the Coopers Marquees Novice Stakes (3.35).

Richard Fahey’s Veydari cost £200,000 at the breeze-ups and showed plenty of ability to finish sixth on debut at Haydock. Granted natural progression he could prove a tough nut to crack under Jack Garritty.

Geoff Oldroyd saddles Commander Atkinson who kept on for pressure when finishing fifth behind Kassaya in a 5f Nottingham maiden. He should benefit from going an extra furlong under Harry Russell.

Newcastle tips: Four to follow at the Northumberland Plate Festival | Racing News

Newcastle tips: Four to follow at the Northumberland Plate Festival | Racing News

Thursday sees the start of Newcastle’s three-day Northumberland Plate Festival – live on Sky Sports Racing – where Declan Rix has a quartet of horses to follow.

Tryfan

2.00 – JenningsBet In Scunthorpe Handicap

The race that kicks off the three-day Northumberland Plate Festival – live on Sky Sports Racing – may well prove tactical enough, with just six runners declared and only Gulf Legend making the running recently, doing so off steady fractions.

The Charlie Johnston-trained Attila The Honey likely won’t be far away, but hopefully this potential setup doesn’t deter the chances of Tryfan who stayed on well over twelve furlongs last time out.

Local boy Brian Ellison (trainer) didn’t start the 2024 Flat Turf campaign in great order, but the month of June has seen a stable renaissance, the yard’s horses clearly in a better spot, whatever the reason. That will delight Ellison as he heads into one of his favourite meetings of the year.

In this son of Nathaniel, the yard may start with a bang, Tryfan an impressive-looking horse physically who is having his first start in handicap company. It will also be his second start here on the all-weather at Newcastle, Tryfan running well on debut last season as a juvenile, arguably still the best effort of his three-race career.

His efforts on turf this season haven’t been too bad either, especially given the stable form; Tryfan shaped better than the distance beaten at Beverley back in April, a mid-race stumble not helping his cause before he did ever-so-well to finish runner-up at Thirsk 40 days ago, hanging his chance away off the home bend before running on.

If that wasn’t a sign that he is going the wrong way mentally, or he is developing into a tricky ride, he looks a player in this small-field, tricky contest.

What’s She At

2.30 – JenningsBet In Boroughbridge Restricted Maiden Stakes

Not a whole pile of form to go on here in this 10-runner juvenile race, but there are fewer better trainers of a 2yo in Britain than Archie Watson and it’s interesting that he sends What’s She At all the way to Newcastle from his Upper Lambourn base.

Watson has a 21 per cent strike rate when sending juveniles to this track, one of his highest at all the UK courses, and maybe his most solid given the size of the data set (253 runners). In general, his young horses often know their job and so, What’s She At is worth following here.

By first-season sire Arizona, who we are still learning about, What’s She At is out of Fifer who has already thrown two nice horses in her broodmare career, in Enzemble and Udododontu. The former won on the all-weather while Fifer herself is from a family who have won plenty of races on an artificial surface.

Arizona, from the No Nay Never and Scat Daddy line, should be able to produce horses who handle all-weather surfaces, but overall, the market will likely be the best guide to this €8,000 purchase.

Wedadi

3.00 – JenningsBet in Boroughbridge Restricted Maiden Stakes

Division Two of the above juvenile contest and not the strongest-looking of races on paper. Experience can often be key with such young horses so hopefully Wedadi can put hers to good use for the Charlie Johnston and Joe Fanning combo.

Fanning may have to be at his wily best given the forecast headwind at Newcastle on Thursday – I suspect he would love a lead and some cover – as on debut, Wedadi showed excellent professionalism from the gates and good early pace to lead her Leicester rivals.

In what was a stronger race than this, she had much of the field off the bridle going past 3out before she steadily weakened, shaping better than the distance beaten, having been a significant drifter in the market.

On both sides of Wedadi’s pedigree, she should be very much at home on an artificial surface for a yard that have had its fair share of winners here.

Veydari

3.35 – Coopers Marquees Novice Stakes

The Wathnan Racing team can hopefully continue on from a highly successful Royal Ascot with Veydari.

The son of first-season sire Hello Youmzain was beaten a 2/1f on debut at Haydock 21 days ago, but probably did a little bit too much on the front end into a headwind. Richard Fahey’s inmate was fresh and well and will hopefully switch off a bit better with that experience under his belt.

He faces a forecast headwind at Newcastle again on Thursday so hopefully jockey Jack Garrity can switch him off a bit better than his debut run, while also getting some cover.

It was an above-average novice that he made his debut at Haydock and so far, the race has worked out nicely enough with three horses running placed on their next starts.

Northumberland Plate: Sir Mark Prescott has next race doubts for Pledgeofallegiance | Racing News

Northumberland Plate: Sir Mark Prescott has next race doubts for Pledgeofallegiance | Racing News

Sir Mark Prescott’s Northumberland Plate contender Pledgeofallegiance is now 7-1 for the race but doubts over his running have arisen following his Ascot Stakes win

Pledgeofallegiance ended Prescott’s 28-year drought at the Royal meeting when striking in the Ascot Stakes and, having also scored at Goodwood in the early stages of the campaign, would be seeking a hat-trick if making a quick return to action at Gosforth Park.

However, Prescott has warned the general 8-1 favourite is “unlikely” to participate at this stage as he recovers from his Ascot exertions, although he is not definitely ruled out.

Prescott said: “Pledgeofallegiance, the horse who won at Ascot is favourite but he is unlikely to run. I don’t feel I want to run him back as quick as that. He is unlikely, but that is not the same as he will not run.

“I think he had a hard enough race (at Ascot). If I am pleased with him this week, then I reserve the right to change my mind.”

Prescott could also be represented by Trooper Bisdee and True Legend, with the former carrying a similar profile to his Ascot-winning stablemate Pledgeofallegiance.

Trooper Bisdee returned from 263 days off the track to score at Nottingham last month before adding a convincing four-length success at Pontefract on Sunday.

Prescott added: “Trooper Bisdee will have a 5lb penalty. He would only run in the race if that got him in to the proper race.

“I would probably not run him in the consolation – probably. If the penalty got him in then there would be a serious possibility of him running (in the Plate), but then he would also have to be fine.

“Then also in the race is True Legend who remains a possibility. He is trundling along towards the race and if he got in the proper race, then he would be a very likely runner.”

There was a total of 50 confirmed for the £150,000 event on Monday with Chester Cup winner Zoffee among them.

Cathy O’Leary, Tony Martin’s sister, has Chester Plate winner Alphonse Le Grande, Firstman, Belgoprince and En Or engaged while Prydwen, who ran in the Gold Cup, is another possible for George Scott.

He told Sky Sports Racing: “It’s not the conventional route, we knew we might be up against it in the Gold Cup but he went there on the back of three career-bests.

“The owners have had horses a long time and I felt he deserved the opportunity to run in the race as it is so prestigious.

“Once he was outclassed and the ground was a bit quick, Callum (Shepherd) looked after him and we knew this race was around the corner. I’ve confirmed him this morning and it will be a day-by-day thing and we’ll decide closer to the time.

“These horses are there to run, he’s not a stallion prospect, he’s a gelding, but we would only be going if he was pleasing us at home.”
