British GP: Lando Norris completes Friday practice double for fast McLaren with Max Verstappen trailing in Practice Two | F1 News

Lando Norris completed a strong opening day of practice for his home British Grand Prix by staying at the top of the timesheet in Practice Two, this time heading a McLaren one-two.

The Practice One pacesetter maintained his leading position in the second session and opened his advantage over a lap of Silverstone to an impressive 0.3s, with McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri joining him at the head of the timesheet in second place.

Championship leader Max Verstappen, however, was only seventh quickest with the Dutchman unusually only the second-fastest Red Bull driver in the session.

Sergio Perez was third-fastest in the sister RB20, with Nico Hulkenberg a surprise fourth for Haas and Charles Leclerc fifth quickest for Ferrari.

Lewis Hamilton was the lead Mercedes in sixth, with Austrian victor George Russell only 10th.

Here’s what you can look forward to during coverage of this weekend’s British Grand Prix.

But after a session in which some teams ran slightly different run plans to normal amid the looming threat of rain, which eventually arrived with five minutes in the session to go, Sky Sports F1’s Karun Chandhok suspected: “I think they are not showing their hand at Red Bull – and I expect Mercedes are the same.

“McLaren look good and Lando hit the ground running. Every run, the car looks nice and comfortable to drive

“Are they six tenths faster than Mercedes and Verstappen? If they are, that would be amazing for the home fans.”

F1 teams did still complete the majority of their planned P2 schedules – including the soft-tyre simulations and heavier-fuel race runs – before the late-session rain arrived. Showers are again forecast for Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race days.

Norris lays down early marker in front of home fans

With the late-race collision between Norris and Verstappen from last Sunday’s Austrian GP having been the dominant topic of conversation so far at Silverstone – an ongoing debate which McLaren’s Zak Brown waded into on Friday by aiming criticism at Red Bull – it was back to on-track business for the sport’s leading duo in the Drivers’ Championship at the event which marks the halfway point of the increasingly-competitive 2024 season.

Zak Brown hits back at Red Bull after the incident between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris at the Austrian Grand Prix.

And it was Norris who took day one honours in front of his home crowd at Silverstone.

Although the McLarens, unlike Red Bull and Mercedes, had run the soft tyres in opening practice when Norris topped the first session, the team stayed at the head of the field once everyone had run the weekend’s quickest compound in the second session too.

Norris’ best lap, which he set later than most of his rivals, was an impressive 0.331s quicker than Piastri and 0.434s ahead of third-placed Perez.

Norris says McLaren are ready for any weather but hopes its stays dry for his home race after topping both Friday practice sessions at Silverstone.

Verstappen finished up almost 0.7s back although, perhaps significantly, the Dutchman completed his soft-tyre lap 15 minutes earlier than Norris when the track was clearly not quite as grippy or fast.

The fact Hulkenberg subsequently ended up fourth would suggest there was plenty more time to find for F1’s world champion had he run on track when conditions were at their best. Verstappen did have a slide through the high-speed Becketts section on a push lap later on in his soft-tyre run.

Interestingly, Norris referenced Mercedes as appearing to have a car to compete with McLaren.

“I think we made some good progress,” said Norris, who goes into the weekend 81 points adrift of Verstappen in the standings.

“I think we’re pretty tight and even with Mercedes, they seem probably just as quick as us. They just didn’t turn up the engine and do as much in the final run. So I think we’re in a good place but we probably have a little bit more to find.”

Today on Sky Sports Racing: Kylian seeking Doncaster success with Newton Abbot also featuring on Friday | Racing News

The Sky Sports Racing cameras head to Doncaster and Newton Abbot on Friday afternoon, with 14 live races in store on the Flat and over jumps.

3.50 Doncaster – Kylian drops into handicap company

Kylian is having his first run in a handicap in the bettingsites.co.uk Betting Sites Handicap and should go close if running to the same form of his six-length win in the Dragon Stakes at Sandown a year ago.

His five subsequent starts – his last two for Archie Watson after switching from Karl Burke’s yard – in Listed and Group company have proved fruitless, but the horse should be more settled down in class after finishing 12th behind Asfoora in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot last time.

Looking For Lynda finished seventh in this race last year but now races off a 6lb lower mark and has been running consistently this season. He could make use of his falling rating.

Of the rest, Nigel Tinkler’s four-year-old Squealer just lost out to Navello at Windsor last time and a similar performance should allow him to be competitive, despite a 1lb rise.

2.40 Doncaster – Sea Regal and Regal Connection feature

William Haggas’ Sea Regal won at Ripon when stepped up to a mile and two furlongs for the first time and holds obvious claims representing a yard that landed this bettingsites.co.uk Safe Betting Sites Novice Stakes in 2022 with Sea On Time.

Regal Connection was a well-beaten bronze medallist on debut at Leicester and steps up to one mile and four, which looks sure to suit. He must be respected for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin.

Ed Walker’s Crown Of India did well to finish third at Salisbury, having been short of room. He is bound to improve with race experience and looked to relish the step up in trip to 1m 4f.

2.50 Newton Abbot – Melton Mossy on hat-trick hunt

The Evan Williams-trained Melton Mossy won nicely at Worcester and faces another 7lb rise in the newtonabbotracing.com Handicap Hurdle but is the sort to keep improving with Adam Wedge onboard.

Sam Twiston-Davies gets the leg up on Jumeirah King, who carries a 7lb penalty following his recent win at Worcester. There could still be more to come.

Another to note would be Carrigeen Kampala who looked to have a fair bit in hand last time out when comfortably winning to land her fourth victory at the Devon track.

Best of the rest

Beylerbeyi was successful in handicap company at Doncaster last time out and returns seeking a treble for Richard Kingscote and Ian Williams. Thanks Dad and Panama City also go to post at 2.05 in what looks an intriguing one-mile contest.

Two last-time-out winners Arcon and Visibility clash at Doncaster (3.15) before Angel Shared goes in search of a four-timer at 4.25.

Over at Newton Abbot, Gower Prince is looking for his fourth victory at the track before the similarly prolific Clearance goes to post at 4.00.

Friday tips: Horses to follow on day three at Newcastle | Racing News

Friday tips: Horses to follow on day three at Newcastle | Racing News

All-Weather expert Simon Mapletoft is on duty at Gosforth Park on Friday evening, live on Sky Sports Racing, and here he reveals his five fancies.

Phoenix Star

4.55 Skopes Menswear Metrocentre Store Handicap (5f)

Bright young trainer Jessica Macey’s booking of Silvestre de Sousa catches the eye in this sprint handicap. Her eight-year-old thrives at Newcastle and drops in grade following a string of creditable performances on turf. His last three runs on the Tapeta track have yielded two firsts and a second and he resumes just 1lb higher than his last winning mark.

Watch day two of the Northumberland Plate Festival from Newcastle live on Sky Sports Racing (Sky 415 | Virgin 519) on Friday 28th June.

Prince Of Zenda

5.25 Jenningsbet In Shiremoor Gosforth Park Cup Handicap (5f)

Hugo Palmer has won all the major races at the Plate Festival but this famous old handicap is missing from his CV. He’s hopeful that Prince Of Zenda (Nap) can set the record straight on a track he has won at twice already this year.

Palmer tells me he has been planning to drop the gelding back to the minimum trip for some time and could have picked the ideal race to do so. He showed enough natural speed to lead a hot Class 2 field deep into a 6f race here in May, giving best only to subsequent winner Misty Grey, and can defy a career-high mark.

Chic Colombine

6.00 Jenningsbet In Delves Group 3 Hoppings Fillies’ Stakes (10f)

Already proven at this level, George Boughey’s filly can atone for a luckless defeat in the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom on Derby Day. She didn’t get the breaks when she needed them that day but still only went down by a neck over the extended mile.

Chic Colombine is one of Simon Mapletoft’s fancies

Stepping up in distance promises to suit her and she won her novice at this track on her only previous All-Weather start. She is rated 6lb inferior to German Listed scorer Tiffany but receives an appealing 12lb weight for age allowance while German Guineas winner Darnation’s 5lb penalty makes her task tougher.

Only In Jakarta

6.35 skopes.co.uk Best For Menswear handicap (1m)

This No Nay Never colt impressed me when returning from a break to win a 7f novice at Newcastle in January. He didn’t live up to that promise at the Craven Meeting at Newmarket but has had his wind tweaked since and remains unexposed as a handicapper.

Stepping up to 1m off a 2lb lower mark, he can get right back on track for Kevin Ryan, who saddles tow Royal Ascot winners this year, and his stable jockey Tom Eaves. He is my next best bet of the meeting.

Global Humor

8.20 Jenningsbet In North Shields Handicap (6f)

Jim Goldie’s veteran has been making good headway in his last two races on turf without troubling the judge, but a return to a stiffer track at Newcastle can see him register his sixth win on the All-Weather. The nine-year-old needs a strong pace to run at and should get that here. He is only 2lb higher than when successful over course and distance in February and is well drawn in stall nine under Paul Mulrennan, who excels on hold-up horses at this track.

Today on Sky Sports Racing: Chester & Newton Abbot the Friday features as Rebaatt takes on Amancio | Racing News

Rip-roaring action on the Roodee at Chester mixes with summer jumping from Newton Abbot on a fantastic Friday on Sky Sports Racing.

3:25 Chester – Rebaatt can get off the mark for Haggas

Only subsequent winner Whathappensinvegas proved too good for Rebaatt last time at Newmarket and William Haggas’ gelding looks well poised to strike from stall four in the Pure Homes Handicap (3.25).

Jack Channon’s Amancio has been in top form this year, winning once and filling the places three times in six starts.

Son of Frankel Hutchence was well supported on two starts last year and returned with a fair effort at Windsor for Ralph Beckett, with Rob Hornby coming in to ride for the first time.

James Ferguson’s Tatateo is the only last-time winner in the field after seeing off just three rivals at Lingfield in May.

5.10 Chester – Native King looks dangerous on handicap debut

Mulrennan and Palmer could be the ones to watch in the concluding London Essence Handicap (5.10) with handicap debutant Native King.

Native King has his first run on turf following his three starts on the all-weather and trainer Hugo Palmer won this race last year.

Haggas’ Treasure Time was disappointing when last seen at Newcastle but warrants respect for a top yard.

Juantorena bids to get back to winning ways following a struggle at York. He should thrive back amongst a smaller field to repeat on his penultimate start.

6.10 Newton Abbot – Matterhorn meets War Lord in feature

Image:
Paul Nicholls’ Matterhorn looks like an exciting chaser

Paul Nicholls’ exciting young chaser Matterhorn will seek to make it two from two over fences in the Follow @attheracesontwitter Handicap Chase (6.10).

The six-year-old came with much promise from France and has always shaped as though he would improve for the larger obstacles and got the job done against his sole rival Gower Prince at Ludlow last time.

Joe Tizzard pair War Lord and Kauto The King could provide the main danger, with the former looking to get back to winning ways after dropping from a career-high mark of 149 to his current level at 128.
