Lawrence Okolie would beat Chris Billam-Smith and Richard Riakporhe at bridgerweight, says Macaulay McGowan | Boxing News

Over the next two days gym-mates Macaulay McGowan and Jack Massey could both win European championships.

Massey takes on Isaac Chamberlain for the cruiserweight title on Saturday, live on Sky Sports, while McGowan boxes Abass Baraou for the super-welterweight belt in Bolton on Friday.

He knows Baraou is a daunting opponent. “I expect a really tough fight and I’m looking to bring the best of me and get the win,” McGowan told Sky Sports. “I don’t see any weaknesses in him!

Cruiserweights Isaac Chamberlain and Jack Massey continue their war of words as their pre-fight presser gets heated

“I’ve fought good fighters, I’ve been in with some really top fighters and it’s just all the same. I’ve just got to believe in myself and what I do.

“If I apply myself and do what I need to do I think I can drag him into my gameplan and make this a really good fight and get the win. I am really confident.”

He added: “I’ve been in with Sergio Martinez, I’m not really worried about anybody else.”

Tyler Denny edged out Macauley McGowan by split decision to become European EEU middleweight champion

McGowan has had an up and down career. Since his loss to Martinez in 2022 he’s only been defeated once. That was a split-decision reverse last year to Tyler Denny who went on to become the European middleweight champion himself.

Earlier in 2023 he also ventured on to enemy territory when he took on Farrhad Saad in Paris and was unfortunate to come away with only a draw.

This next fight though could be the high point of his career. McGowan had a unique metaphor to describe what victory would feel like for him. He likened it to Patrick Swayze singing ‘She’s Like the Wind’.

McGowan says he made massive improvements in his fight against Farrhad Saad which was declared a draw

“Right at the end Wendy Frazer comes in and sings the harmonies. It adds to the song and it just makes the whole song,” he said enthusiastically.

“And this is my career – 20 years I’ve been Patrick Swayze in ‘She’s Like the Wind’. It’s coming, that big moment’s coming and it doesn’t. It goes back down. And then something changes in the instrumental, Wendy Frazer turns up – boom – and she hits the notes and it’s like, wow, what a great song.

“So this on Friday is my Wendy Frazer moment.”

Chamberlain exchanges words with opponent Massey as the pair face off ahead of their European and Commonwealth cruiserweight title clash

McGowan will be first of trainer Joe Gallagher’s fighters from the Champs Camp gym in Manchester in action this week.

“By Sunday we could have two European champions,” McGowan said. “We train hard, we set our standards high and we expect these results.

“Jack’s been looking well and I think he knocks Isaac Chamberlain out.”

Massey blasted through Steve Eloundou Ntere, shaking him up with two-punch combination before scything him down with an overarm right

An inspiring new addition to their gym has been Lawrence Okolie. Now trained by Gallagher, he came back from his loss to Chris Billam-Smith to knock out Lukasz Rozanski in one round and win the WBC’s bridgerweight title.

“We’ve seen him come a bit unmotivated, a bit heavy,” McGowan said. “We could see the transformation from that guy to world champion in a short space of time so it gave everyone a lift.”

Ringwalk times

  • Ben Whittaker’s ringwalk for his light-heavyweight contest with Ezra Arenyeka is expected around 9pm on Saturday night.
  • For the Chris Billam-Smith vs Richard Riakporhe main event, ringwalks will be from 9.45pm.
  • Don’t miss the big Selhurst Park bill live on Sky Sports.

He believes this version of Okolie would beat either Billam-Smith or Richard Riakporhe in his new 224lb weight class.

“He’s a force to be reckoned with. He wasn’t the guy I’ve seen on TV holding,” McGowan said of Okolie.

“If they could [move up] I think Lawrence knocks them both out.”

Final remaining tickets for Billam-Smith vs Riakporhe available via Boxxer.com.

T20 World Cup: Pakistan beat Canada to keep tournament hopes alive | Cricket News

Pakistan kept their hopes of reaching the T20 World Cup Super Eights stage alive with a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Canada.

Mohammad Rizwan scored a timely half-century and Babar Azam played a captain’s knock as Pakistan bounced back from successive defeats to beat Canada at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in Westbury, New York.

Following their shock opening loss to co-hosts USA, and defeat against rivals India, Pakistan’s tournament would have been over if they failed to triumph at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Tuesday. The 2009 T20 World Cup winners now sit third with two points after one win in three matches, with Tuesday’s win meaning they still have a shot at finishing in the top two in Group A.

Azam won the toss and put Canada into bat, with opener Aaron Johnson beginning the innings with back-to-back boundaries.

The impressive Johnson (52) waged a lone battle against Pakistan’s pace attack. Mohammad Amir (2-13) and Haris Rauf (2-26) led the charge for Pakistan, while Shaheen Afridi (1-21) and Naseem Shah (1-24) helped ensure Canada were unable to find rhythm.

Only three Canadian batters reached double digits and if not for Johnson’s maiden World Cup fifty and a late flurry from Kaleem Sana (13 not out), Canada would have struggled to reach the modest total of 106-7 they posted.

Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan scored a half-century in the win against Canada

The temporary arena in East Meadow, where India and South Africa defended less than run-a-ball targets in recent days, looked on course for another competitive low-scoring match as Saim Ayub (6) fell early and Pakistan looked shaky at 21-1 after five overs.

Skipper Babar steadied the ship, though, bringing up the 50 partnership with opener Rizwan from 49 balls.

Rizwan (53 not out) and Babar (33) took few risks, the captain playing in measured fashion as he hit one six and one four before he fell to Dillon Heyliger (2-18), but Pakistan comfortably reached their target with 15 balls to spare.

Pakistan now know if Ireland beat hosts United States on Friday then a win for them over the Irish on Sunday would secure progression.

Canada, also on two points, need a win over India on Saturday to stay in the top-two race.

What they said

Pakistan captain Babar Azam…

“Good for us, we [needed] this win. I think all credit to the team because we started well in the bowling.

“To be honest, in this pitch here, five or six overs can be very crucial because the ball is not coming properly and one pace. Sometimes it’s low, sometimes it’s double pace behaviour, but I think after the sixth over the pitch is a little bit settled and then we attacked.

“We are going to [have] the same mindset to win [the next] match, for sure. We can play our best cricket over there (at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Florida), [those] conditions are much better than here.

What’s Next?

Two games take place in the early hours of Wednesday June 12, as Sri Lanka also take on Nepal from 12am (midnight) live on Sky Sports Action, followed by Australia vs Namibia live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket from 1am.

Then, on Wednesday afternoon, hosts USA face India live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket from 3pm.

Canadian GP: Max Verstappen overcomes wet-race chaos to beat rueful Lando Norris, George Russell to win | F1 News

Canadian GP: Max Verstappen overcomes wet-race chaos to beat rueful Lando Norris, George Russell to win | F1 News

Max Verstappen won a chaotic and gripping Canadian Grand Prix with Lando Norris and George Russell left to reflect on what might have been after a Montreal race of high drama amid on-off rain.

In an unpredictable 70-lap race that featured four changes of lead and two Safety Car periods triggered by crashes, Verstappen returned to winning ways a fortnight after Red Bull’s miserable Monaco for his fifth win of the season to re-establish a more comfortable world-championship lead, of 56 points.

McLaren’s Norris twice led the race – the first time after overtaking both Verstappen and Russell – but had to settle for second after the cards did not fall in his favour, particularly under the first Safety Car.

Polesitter Russell ended up third and looked particularly crestfallen after a topsy-turvy race in which he made several mistakes and collided with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

Dropping as low as fifth after that latter incident following the race’s second Safety Car period, Russell was then overtaken by Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who went on to overtake Piastri soon afterwards and move into the final podium place.

But Russell rallied late on and repassed Hamilton on the penultimate lap to ensure he was the drive who sealed Mercedes’ first Grand Prix podium of 2024.

Fourth still represented Hamilton’s best result on a Sunday so far this year, although the seven-time Monaco victor, who qualified six places behind Russell in seventh, described it as “one of the worst races I’ve driven”.

Overtaken by both Mercedes cars, who had been the only leading cars to pit for a second set of dry tyres, Oscar Piastri ended up fifth in the second McLaren.

Aston Martin took sixth and seventh with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, Canada’s home driver, respectively.

In a fraught race-long fight for the final points positions, Daniel Ricciardo overcome a five-second time penalty for a jump start to fight back and cap the best weekend of his disapoointing season so far in eighth. Alpine also scored crucial points with Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon ninth and 10th.

Ferrari though endured a total nightmare with their hopes of building momentum from their Monaco win undone by retirements for both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who caused a second Safety Car by spinning and collecting Williams’ Alex Albon.

Lando Norris eases past both George Russell and Max Verstappen to claim the lead at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez’s miserable weekend ended in a DNF too after the Mexican, who had dropped out in Q1 on Saturday, crashed and broke his Red Bull’s rear wing against the barriers.

Canadian GP result: Top 10

1) Max Verstappen, Red Bull

2) Lando Norris, McLaren

3) George Russell, Mercedes

4) Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

5) Oscar Piastri, McLaren

6) Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin

7) Lance Stroll, Aston Martin

8) Daniel Ricciardo, RB

T20 World Cup: Afghanistan dominate New Zealand as Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka | Cricket News

Fazalhaq Farooqi continued his explosive start to the Men’s T20 World Cup as Afghanistan wrapped up a dominant 84-run victory over New Zealand in Guyana.

Elsewhere, Bangladesh kickstarted their World Cup campaign with a two-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in Texas.

Having taken 5-9 in the opening win over Uganda, Farooqi blew away New Zealand’s top order as their run chase failed to gain any momentum and they crumbled to 75 all out.

Score summary – New Zealand v Afghanistan

Afghanistan 159-6 from 20 overs: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (80 off 56 balls), Ibrahim Zadran (44 off 41 balls); Trent Boult (2-22), Matt Henry (2-37)

New Zealand 75 all out after 15.2 overs: Glenn Phillips (18 off 18 balls); Fazalhaq Farooqi (4-17), Rashid Khan (4-17), Mohammad Nabi (2-16)

Wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran had earlier paved the way for Afghanistan’s win, putting on 103 for the first wicket before Zadran fell for 44 for 41 balls.

Having put on 154 in the victory against Uganda, they became the first opening pair to record consecutive century partnerships in a T20 World Cup.

Azmatullah Omarzai smashed a rapid 22, with Gurbaz finally falling for 80 from 56 deliveries – including five sixes and as many fours – as one of three wickets in the final over as Afghanistan finished on 159-6.

Farooqi then took charge, bowling Finn Allen first ball and adding the scalps of Devon Conway (8) and the dangerous Daryl Mitchell (5).

Captain Rashid Khan piled on the problems for New Zealand as he dismissed his opposite number Kane Williamson for nine, adding the wickets of Mark Chapman and Michael Bracewell in successive balls to leave New Zealand 43-6.

Glenn Phillips offered the most resistance with a run-a-ball 18, but the Kiwis had no answer to Rashid who finished with 4-17 as he caught Lockie Ferguson off his final delivery.

Farooqi returned to have Liam Henry caught in the deep, matching Rashid’s figures as he wrapped up the New Zealand innings for 75 in the 16th over.

Bangladesh survive late scare to beat Sri Lanka

Bangladesh opened their T20 World Cup campaign with a victory as they edged past Sri Lanka by two wickets in Texas.

Chasing 125 to win, two wickets in as many balls created a tight finish before the experienced head of Mahmudullah saw them home.

Score summary – Sri Lanka v Bangladesh

Sri Lanka 124-9 from 20 overs: Pathum Nissanka (47 off 28 balls), Dhananjaya de Silva (21 off 26 balls); Mustafizur Rahman (3-17), Rishad Hossain (3-22)

Bangladesh 125-8 from 19 overs: Towhid Hridoy (40 off 20 balls), Litton Kumer Das (36 off 38 balls); Nuwan Thushara (4-18), Wanindu Hasaranga (2-32)

Opener Pathum Nissanke provided a strong platform to the Sri Lanka innings in Grand Prairie, hitting a six and seven fours as he made 47 from 28 balls.

But from 100-3 at the start of the 15th over, they lost a flurry of late wickets and the innings stumbled to 124-9.

Mustafizur Rahman took 3-17 and Rishad Hossain 3-22.

Bangladesh’s reply started badly, both openers departing in the first two overs as they stumbled to 28-3.

Towhid Hridoy went on the offensive, smashing four sixes as he raced to 40 from 20 balls and added 63 with Kumer Das, who made 36 from 38 deliveries.

Needing 12 from the final three overs, they looked to be easing to victory before Nuwan Thushara – who finished with 4-18 – returned to take two wickets in successive deliveries.

But Mahmudullah eased any nerves, the former captain finishing 16 not out as he steered his side home with an over to spare.

Bangladesh now head to New York to face South Africa on Monday, while Sri Lanka, who have lost both of their matches so far, play Nepal in Florida on Tuesday night.
