Novak Djokovic: Defending champion and world No 1 wins another five-set French Open epic at Roland Garros | Tennis News

Novak Djokovic battled injury and fatigue to survive another near five-hour, five-set French Open thriller with a 6-1 5-7 3-6 7-5 6-3 victory over Francisco Cerundolo on Monday.

The 37-year-old tweaked his knee and received four medical timeouts for the problem, but despite his movement being hampered, Djokovic refused to surrender, and he battled back from two sets to one down and 2-4 in the fourth set to make the last eight in Paris for the 15th consecutive time.

The Serb, who is chasing a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title, sealed his 370th match victory to move clear of Swiss great Roger Federer.

Back to back five-setters for Djokovic

It is the first time since the 2012 French Open that Djokovic has played back to back five-setters at a Grand Slam (Andreas Seppi, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga)

The only other time before then was also in 2012 at the Australian Open (those epics against Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal)

The 37-year-old showed no early signs of fatigue from his marathon third-round win over Lorenzo Musetti, another near five-hour epic that ended in the early hours of Sunday morning, as he blitzed clay specialist Cerundolo in the opening set.

Djokovic sustained a right knee issue early in the next and needed treatment on court. He was heard telling the physio: “I screwed up my knee. I’m slipping and sliding all the time.”

Four games later he complained to a tournament supervisor about the state of the court, saying: “I’m telling you as a player, it’s not okay.”

When the official told Djokovic the grounds people felt the surface was fine, the Serbian snapped: “They know better than me the court is good or not?”

Djokovic receives medical assistance for his right knee during the contest

He took medication again after Argentinian 23rd seed Cerundolo levelled the match, finally converting a break point at the 13th attempt.

Cerundolo grabbed another break early in the next set to go 3-0 up and comfortably got ahead in the clash as alarm bells began to ring for Djokovic for a second straight match as he continued to hobble between points.

The 24-time grand slam champion, whose five-set match against Lorenzo Musetti finished after 3am on Sunday morning, appeared to be running on empty and chuntered with his team in the players’ box, occasionally appearing to suggest he was ready to give up.

The finish line seemed to appear for Argentine hitter Cerundolo when he went up 4-2 in the next set but the 25-year-old squandered the advantage as Djokovic sent down two big serves and produced a spectacular drop en route to holding for 6-5 before levelling the contest.

Having dropped serve after a fast start, Djokovic took a nasty tumble during a point and ranted about the state of the Court Philippe-Chatrier surface, with his voice drenched in sarcasm: “Well done, supervisor and everybody. Not slippery at all.”

Yet Djokovic did not appear too injured when he dived to get to a volley at the net, almost going full splits before landing on his stomach on his way to winning another remarkable match.

Most Grand Slam wins, all-time

370 – Djokovic

369 – Federer

314 – Nadal

233 – Connors

224 – Agassi

The Serbian will play the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz or two-time finalist Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

De Minaur makes history for Australia

Alex de Minaur broke a 20-year Australian hoodoo at the French Open as he battled from a set down to stun fifth seed Daniil Medvedev

Alex de Minaur was roared on by his young superfan as he upset Daniil Medvedev to reach his first quarter-final in Paris.

The Australian had launched an appeal on social media to find the boy who had cheered every point he won throughout his rain-interrupted third-round win over Jan-Lennard Struff.

And the boy was given a front-row seat on Court Suzanne Lenglen to watch his hero reach the last eight after a 4-6 6-2 6-1 6-3 victory.

“He’s managed a miracle. I might have to get him on tour week in, week out,” said the 11th seed.

“No, we found him obviously through the beautiful world of social media, we ended up finding him. We got him to the match. He came with his whole crew, with his mates and his coach. It was great to see him out there.

“Again, even on that big court, I could hear him after every single point. It’s a distinctive voice, so it’s great to see.

“He’ll be around. I think he’ll be chilling with me tomorrow in my practice day and of course he’ll be there for the very next match.”

It was a tough afternoon for fifth seed Medvedev, who took the first set handily but needed lengthy treatment on a horrible-looking blister on his foot in the second.

History-maker

Alex de Minaur becomes the first Australian man into the final eight at Roland-Garros since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004 after defeating Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev refused to blame the issue for his defeat, though.

He said: “No, not at all. I had a blister, it didn’t help me to call the physio, but I had a blister that got a little irritated so needed to take care of it.

“No, Alex played better. To be honest, I’m disappointed to lose, but I don’t have anything to tell myself in a tough way like I was not, I don’t know, good attitude today or I was not fighting till the end.

“I did all of this. He played better. My best was not enough today, so looking forward to next ones.”

Rangers transfers: Oscar Cortes returns to Rangers for second loan from Lens | Football News

Oscar Cortes has rejoined Rangers for a second loan spell from Lens, with the Scottish Premiership club having an obligation to buy the winger next summer.

The 20-year-old Colombian will then sign a four-year deal with the Ibrox club until 2029.

Cortes initially joined Rangers on loan in January, making seven appearances and scoring once before a muscle injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

On his new deal, the winger said: “I am delighted to be able to stay at Rangers.

“It was an honour and privilege for me to join the club in January and I was enjoying my football under the manager and playing alongside my team-mates.

“Sadly, the injury ended my season early, but I have been working hard and I am excited to help the team and play in front of the wonderful fans again soon.”

Manager, Philippe Clement, added: “I am really pleased to have Oscar coming back.

“He was a big asset to the squad when he came to the club and he showed the qualities that attracted him to us.

“Oscar suffered a setback, but he has worked tirelessly during his recovery and I am sure all of the fans are looking forward to seeing him again next season.”

He is Rangers’ second summer signing after Brazilian defender Jefte joined on a four-year deal from Fluminense, having spent last season on loan with Cypriot First Division champions APOEL.

The five players were part of the Rangers squad beaten on penalties by Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2022 Europa League final and each depart Ibrox as Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup winners.

Canadian GP: What now in F1 2024 after Red Bull’s ‘big weakness’ exposed in Monaco defeat? | F1 News

Canadian GP: What now in F1 2024 after Red Bull’s ‘big weakness’ exposed in Monaco defeat? | F1 News

Max Verstappen admits Red Bull’s struggles in Monaco exposed the “big weakness” in their 2024 car amid the growing challenge to the world champions’ two-year stranglehold on race weekends in F1.

Amid what was already a tightening of the battle at the front of Formula 1 this season, Red Bull suffered their least competitive showing since last September’s Singapore GP – another street track – two weeks ago in Monaco with Verstappen qualifying and finishing sixth in a race won impressively by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

On leaving Monaco with a reduced world championship lead over Leclerc of 31 points, Verstappen admitted: “Some tracks that are still upcoming won’t really be that good for us but then also some tracks will be better for us.”

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, the world champion added: “The only positive that comes out of [Monaco] is that we understand what our big weakness is and that’s what we really have to work on.

“I think if we can solve that, or at least make it decent, we immediately gain a lot of lap time.

“That is promising – but we have to do it.”

So what ‘weakness’ did Monaco expose for Red Bull?

Red Bull’s rivals have largely been clutching at straws when attempting to identify weaker points in their cars since the current F1 rules package was introduced in 2022, with the Milton Keynes team and Verstappen dominating the era so far.

But the RB20 was conclusively off the pace all weekend in Monaco with car not enjoying the street track’s bumps or kerbs.

“To understand what the issues were with the ride and the kerbs, we’ve got a huge amount of data now to go away and look at, and look to address for the upcoming races,” said team boss Christian Horner after the race.

“I think we saw it in Singapore last year as well, so I think we’ve had another example of that. We know it’s an area of the car we need to work on.

Chelsea: Enzo Maresca set to be unveiled on Monday after signing five-year deal to become head coach | Football News

Chelsea: Enzo Maresca set to be unveiled on Monday after signing five-year deal to become head coach | Football News

Chelsea are set to confirm Enzo Maresca as their new head coach on Monday.

The 44-year-old, who will succeed Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge, has agreed a five-year deal and will move from Leicester after leading them back to the Premier League by winning the Championship.

Maresca was Chelsea’s number-one choice after a shortlist featuring Brentford boss Thomas Frank, Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi was drawn up.

The Italian’s release clause at the King Power Stadium is understood to have been between £8m and £10m.

Maresca is taking six members of his backroom staff from Leicester with him, including former Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Cabellero.

Chelsea co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart led the recruitment process after being entrusted by co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly.

They travelled to Marbella for face-to-face talks with Maresca after Leicester gave permission for discussions to commence.

Chelsea were impressed by the depth and breadth of Maresca’s knowledge about their squad in talks with his representatives, as well as his focus on the way Chelsea want to play and his desire for the job.

Maresca’s obsession with possession and positional play made him the leading candidate to replace Pochettino, who left by mutual consent.

UFC 302: Dustin Poirier contemplates retirement after defeat to Islam Makhachev in New Jersey | WWE News

MMA legend Dustin Poirier is considering retirement after pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev retained his UFC lightweight title at UFC 302 in New Jersey.

The Russian won his 14th straight fight under the UFC banner with a D’arce choke in the third minute of the fifth round to consign Poirier to his third defeat when challenging for a belt.

With former US President Donald Trump among the crowd, Makhachev landed 88 significant strikes – 147 in total – and five takedowns en route to victory.

Poirier, 35, believes that this may have been his final chance at winning the belt and the popular fighter – who was briefly put to sleep after tapping in the fifth and final round at Prudential Center in Newark – is now considering hanging up his gloves.

“If I do fight again, what am I fighting for? Just to fight? I’ve done that 50 times,” said Poirier.

“I’ve got a little girl, I’m 35 years old, this might be it. I think this might be it.”

Makhachev, meanwhile, believes it is time he was afforded the chance to become a double-world champion by moving up to welterweight.

“It’s my dream. I want to fight for the second belt. I want to feel that energy again, I need a new one,” said the UFC lightweight champion.

Earlier, ex-UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland secured a split decision win over ex-title challenger Paulo Costa.

The 33-year-old American retained number one spot in the middleweight rankings by bouncing back from his title-losing decision match-up against Dricus du Plessis.

Kevin Holland took just one minute 34 seconds to win his middleweight bout with Michal Oleksiejczuk by submission.

Also on the main card, Niko Price and Randy Brown each claimed unanimous decision wins in the welterweight category, beating Alex Morono and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos respectively.

Everton ‘assessing options’ after 777 Partners’ takeover falls through | Football News

Everton ‘assessing options’ after 777 Partners’ takeover falls through | Football News

Everton are assessing “all options for the club’s future ownership” after 777 Partners’ proposed takeover fell through.

Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri was tied into a period of exclusivity with the troubled US investment group until May 31 and could not enter into alternative discussions.

But the 777 Partners’ purchase agreement with Blue Heaven Holdings Limited for the sale and purchase of the majority shareholding in the club has now expired.

A club statement read: “The agreement between 777 Partners and Blue Heaven Holdings Limited for the sale and purchase of the majority shareholding in the club expired today.

“The club’s board of directors recognises the considerable level of financial support 777 Partners has provided the club over recent months and would like to take this opportunity to thank them for this.

“The club will continue to operate as usual, while it works with Blue Heaven Holdings to assess all options for the club’s future ownership.

“The board of directors would like to thank everyone connected to Everton for their patience over recent months and reiterate its commitment to providing further updates when it is appropriate to do so through the club’s official communication channels.”

Moshiri confirmed last week to Everton’s Fan Advisory Board that he had received unsolicited approaches from interested parties, with American businessman John Textor reportedly selling his 40 per cent stake in Crystal Palace with a view to buying the Toffees.

Asked if he had held talks about buying Everton, Textor told The Athletic: “Yes. With the existing constituents – different groups, different lenders, different equity holders.

“I’ve asked them, ‘Is there a way to solve all this confusion and address everyone’s problems’?

“I’m very open-minded to it but I don’t want to come into a situation where I’m not really welcome.

“I’m watching it but 777 still has a contract. There are people that are close to the club who care a lot about it who are also investing.

“There’s the guy running it who’s still calling the shots. Maybe we’re uniquely positioned to solve a lot of problems for people but we’re just watching it right now because there are other people who already own pieces of that club who also want to figure it out.

“I’m looking at that but it’s quite confusing and some things have to clean up.”

Textor, a tech entrepreneur, bought into Palace for £90m in 2021 and his multi-club network Eagle Football also includes French side Lyon, Botafogo in Brazil and RWD Molenbeek in Belgium.

However, the American said his situation at Palace, where he is unable to secure a majority shareholding, meant it was no longer compatible with their longer-term goals and had therefore instructed Raine Group to find a buyer for his stake.

In a statement to the Financial Times, he said: “Crystal Palace is an independent club. An integrated sporting model, such as ours at Eagle, is simply not a perfect fit.”

B Dortmund 0 – 2 R Madrid

Real Madrid were crowned champions of Europe for a 15th time at Wembley, with second-half goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr seeing off a brave Borussia Dortmund for a 2-0 Champions League final victory.

The German side hit a post and created two more clear chances in the first half as they threatened a big upset but Real have a unique relationship with this competition and, with an improved display after the interval, they finally came to life.

Toni Kroos – in his final game for the club – set up the opener with a corner for Carvajal to head home with 16 minutes to play, before England’s Jude Bellingham rolled in Vinicius Jr to punish a stretched Dortmund side soon after.

Niclas Fullkrug, who had struck the inside of an upright earlier in the game when Dortmund were breaking through the Real backline at will, thought he’d created a big finish with a powerful header but was flagged offside and Dortmund’s hopes of an unlikely comeback all but ended there.

Real, the Kings of Europe, were crowned again. The Decimoquinta secured.

For the first time, it is with an unbeaten European campaign. They have needed four comebacks along the way, including their last-gasp turnaround against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals and a penalty shootout victory over last season’s winners Manchester City in the quarter-finals, but the Spanish champions wouldn’t be denied.

For Carvajal, Kroos and team-mates Nacho and Luka Modric it is a remarkable sixth Champions League win with Real Madrid. Boss Carlo Ancelotti has now won the coveted prize five times as a head coach. For 20-year-old Bellingham, the first of more to come?

Bellingham: The best night of my life!

Jude Bellingham speaking to TNT Sports:

“I’ve always dreamt of playing in these games. You go through life with people telling you that you can’t do things. Days like this remind you. It gets hard sometimes and you wonder whether it’s worth it but nights like this make you realise.

“I was alright until I saw my mum and dad. Nights like where they could have been at home by 7 o’clock but they’re out until 12 on trips to take me to football. And my little brother who I’m trying to be a role model for. The best night of my life.”

Real’s remarkable Champions League numbers

  • 15 European Cup/Champions League wins – more than twice as many as next-best AC Milan (seven)
  • 5 Champions League wins for Carlo Ancelotti – more than any other manager
  • 6 Champions League wins with Real Madrid for Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal and Nacho

Player ratings

Borussia Dortmund: Kobel (7), Ryerson (7), Hummels (7), Schlotterbeck (6), Maatsen (7), Sabitzer (7), Can (7), Brandt (6), Sancho (7), Fullkrug (8), Adeyemi (7).

Real Madrid: Courtois (8), Carvajal (8), Rudiger (7), Nacho (7), Mendy (6), Camavinga (7), Kroos (7), Valverde (6), Bellingham (7), Vinicius Jr (8), Rodrygo (6).

Player of the match: Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid)

How Real became champions again

The odds were always stacked against Dortmund. They had beaten them against Atletico Madrid and Paris St-Germain on the way to the final but missed moments in the first half came back to cost them here. Those chances may well have played on their minds as they stood in front of their supporters who had urged them on so loudly throughout.

In the end it was Wembley heartache again, just as in their 2013 final defeat to Bayern Munich. For the departing Marco Reus, who was there 11 years ago, it will have felt familiarly painful.

A series of pitch invaders may have disrupted the start to the match but Dortmund were quickly up to speed, picking passes in behind the Real backline for Julian Brandt to skew beyond the far post and Karim Adeyemi to run the ball too far wide of Thibaut Courtois.

Team news

  • Real Madrid were unchanged from their final La Liga game of the season, with Thibaut Courtois in goal, Toni Kroos starting his final game for the club and Luka Modric among the subs.
  • Marco Reus dropped to the bench for his final game as a Dortmund player, with Julian Brandt stepping into midfield. On-loan Man Utd man Jadon Sancho started on the wing for the German side.

Real couldn’t plug the gaps and Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen, who was celebrating winning the Championship with Burnley this time last year, rolled in Fullkrug to slide a shot against the inside of the post midway through the half.

The big striker was agonisingly close again soon after, this time unable to stretch enough to angle in his header from Adeyemi’s parried shot. The left winger was proving too hot to handle. Jadon Sancho on the other side was enjoying success, too. Even Marcel Sabitzer was able to step forwards from midfield and force Courtois to save as Dortmund finished the half on top.

Real Madrid’s best moment in that first 45 had been a speculative effort from the edge of the box from Vinicius Jr. They finally made Gregor Kobel work through a Kroos free-kick from an angle before Carvajal went close from the follow-up corner. The right-back’s eyes lit up again moments later when his shot at the back post was deflected kindly for the keeper.

Real were finally getting into gear. Courtois had to push away a Fullkrug header but the action was now around the Dortmund goalmouth. Bellingham was inches away from flicking in Vinicius Jr’s lofted cross, with the Brazilian laughing to himself after some trickery won Real a corner. It was the set-piece that brought the breakthrough and Carvajal’s second Champions League goal nine years on from his first. A good time to add to his tally.

Bellingham again went close with a deflected shot from inside the box as Real suddenly oozed confidence. Kobel had to save from Kroos and then Eduardo Camavinga and then Nacho. He couldn’t stop Vinicius Jr’s strike though – a clinical finish to seal it after Bellingham found him in space.

Fullkrug thought he had grabbed his side a lifeline but there was no stopping Real’s procession to the throne once more.
